Legendary Duelists: Joey Wheeler’s Red-Eyes

September 5th, 2017

Legendary Duelist Joey Wheeler made a name for himself by becoming runner-up in Pegasus’s Duelist Kingdom tournament. Along the way, he defeated other legendary Duelists including Mai Valentine, Bandit Keith, and with some help from Yugi, the Paradox Brothers. But one of Joey’s most rewarding victories was against Dinosaur Duelist Rex Raptor, who wagered his Red-Eyes B. Dragon against Joey’s Time Wizard early in the Duelist Kingdom tournament. After winning the legendary Red-Eyes B. Dragon from Rex Raptor, Joey’s Deck gradually changed throughout the original animated Yu-Gi-Oh! series. Joey adjusted his Deck to accommodate his Red-Eyes monster. Now, thanks to the release of Legendary Duelists, you can add brand new Red-Eyes cards to your Deck!

The new Red-Eyes cards in Legendary Duelists are reminiscent of some of Joey Wheeler’s most beloved cards. Red-Eyes Baby Dragon, for example, is a Level 3 monster with 1200 ATK and 700 DEF, just like Joey’s Baby Dragon. But unlike the original Baby Dragon, it packs an incredible effect!

When Red-Eyes Baby Dragon is destroyed by battle and sent to the Graveyard, you can Special Summon a Level 7 or lower Red-Eyes monster from your Deck, and then equip it with Red-Eyes Baby Dragon. While equipped, your Red-Eyes monster gains 300 ATK. Plus, if Red-Eyes Baby Dragon is sent to the Graveyard while equipped to your Red-Eyes monster, you can add a Level 1 Dragon, including The Black Stone of Legend, from your Deck or Graveyard to your hand. Both of Red-Eyes Baby Dragon’s effects work especially well with Gearfried the Red-Eyes Iron Knight.

Gearfried the Red-Eyes Iron Knight may remind Duelists of the Joey Wheeler’s Gearfried the Iron Knight, which he used in the Battle City tournament. Like the original Iron Knight, the Red-Eyes Iron Knight is a Level 4 monster with 1800 ATK, 1600 DEF, and the ability to destroy Equip Cards. Unlike Gearfried the Iron Knight, Gearfried the Red-Eyes Iron Knight has a couple of effects that give it some extra power, as well as some amazing synergy with the Red-Eyes theme.

Gearfried the Red-Eyes Iron Knight’s first effect lets you destroy an Equip Card equipped to Gearfried to destroy a Spell or Trap Card your opponent controls. Gearfried’s second effect lets you send an Equip Card on Gearfried to the Graveyard to Special Summon a Level 7 or lower Red-Eyes monster from your Graveyard. Use Red-Eyes Baby Dragon’s effect to attach it to Gearfried, and you’ll be able to trade in your Red-Eyes Baby Dragon to destroy an opponent’s back row card or to Special Summon a Red-Eyes monster from your Graveyard. Then you can use Red-Eyes Baby Dragon’s effect to add a Level 1 Dragon to your hand when it hits the Graveyard.

Red-Eyes Fang with Chain also works well in combination with Gearfried the Red-Eyes Iron Knight. Red-Eyes Fang with Chain is reminiscent of Joey’s Kunai with Chain Trap Card, but works specifically with the Red-Eyes theme.

Red-Eyes Fang with Chain can only be equipped to a Red-Eyes monster. The monster equipped with it can attack two monsters during each Battle Phase. You can also send Red-Eyes Fang with Chain to the Graveyard while it’s equipped to your monster in order to equip one Effect Monster on the field to your monster in its place. Your equipped Red-Eyes monster’s ATK and DEF become equal to the ATK and DEF of the Effect Monster equipped to it.

Red-Eyes Fang with Chain is a strong card for removing your opponent’s Effect Monsters from the field without destroying them or sending them to the Graveyard. Use Red-Eyes Fang with Chain to attach an opponent’s monster to your Gearfried the Red-Eyes Iron Knight, and then use your Gearfried’s effect to fling that monster at an opponent’s back row or Special Summon a Red-Eyes from your Graveyard.

Finally, the new Red-Eyes Slash Dragon Fusion Monster in Legendary Duelists is one of the most powerful Red-Eyes cards ever released. Red-Eyes Slash Dragon is a Level 7 monster that has 2800 ATK and 2400 DEF. It’s a Fusion of Red-Eyes B. Dragon plus any Warrior-type monster.

The easiest way to Summon Red-Eyes Slash Dragon is with Red-Eyes Fusion. Red-Eyes Fusion will not only let you Summon Red-Eyes Slash Dragon with the drop of a card, but it’ll also let you send a Warrior like Gearfried the Red-Eyes Iron Knight from your Deck to your Graveyard by using it as a Fusion Material, fueling Red-Eyes Slash Dragon’s effect.

Red-Eyes Slash Dragon wields extraordinary power. When a Red-Eyes monster attacks, you can equip a Warrior-type monster from your Graveyard to your Red-Eyes Slash Dragon. Each Warrior equipped to it increases your Slash Dragon’s ATK by 200. Red-Eyes Slash Dragon’s second effect is a Quick Effect that lets you send an Equip Card you control to the Graveyard to negate the activation of a card or effect that targets a card you control, and destroy that card. Red-Eyes Slash Dragon’s last effect lets you Special Summon all monsters that are equipped to it when your Slash Dragon is destroyed by battle or by card effect. Red-Eyes Slash Dragon’s series of effects can be tough for an opponent to circumvent.

Red-Eyes Baby Dragon, Gearfried the Red-Eyes Iron Knight, Red-Eyes Fang with Chain, and Red-Eyes Slash Dragon all change the way that Red-Eyes Decks are played by giving Red-Eyes Duelists powerful new cards to use. You can test out these four new cards when Legendary Duelists officially releases on September 8th!
