Shadows in Valhalla: Sound the Horns

August 17th, 2018

Zigfried von Schroeder’s long-anticipated Valkyrie cards are now here! You can find all of his Valkyrie monsters, along with Ride of the Valkyries and Mischief of the Time Goddess, in Shadows in Valhalla!

UnfortunateSalim

In the original animated Yu-Gi-Oh! series, Zigfried was known for wiping out his opponents with ease by using Ride of the Valkyries to swarm the field with Valkyrie monsters. After the release of Shadows in Valhalla, you can do the same! Ride of the Valkyries is a Normal Spell Card that lets you Special Summon any number of Valkyrie monsters with different names from your hand. If you Special Summon three or more, you take no battle damage until the end of the next turn. During the End Phase of the turn you activate Ride of the Valkyries, all of the monsters on your field get shuffled back into your Deck.

There are lots of different Valkyries from Shadows in Valhalla that you can Special Summon with Ride of the Valkyries, including Valkyrie Dritte, Valkyrie Zweite, and Valkyrie Erste. All three of those monsters have effects that activate if they’re Special Summoned with Ride of the Valkyries.

Valkyrie Dritte is a Level 4 monster with 1000 ATK and 1600 DEF. Dritte lets you add a Valkyrie card from your hand to your Deck if it’s Normal or Special Summoned. Dritte also gains 200 ATK for each of your opponent’s banished monsters. Use Valkyrie Dritte to pull your Valkyrie Deck together and assemble the cards you need in your hand.

Valkyrie Zweite is a Level 5 monster with 1600 ATK and 1600 DEF. If Zweite is Summoned, you can target one monster your opponent controls and destroy it. After damage calculation, if Valkyrie Zweite battled, you can target a Continuous Spell Card in your Graveyard and add it to your hand.

Valkyrie Erste is a Level 6 monster with 1600 ATK and 1800 DEF. If you Special Summon it from your hand by the effect of a Spell, you can add a Mischief of the Time Goddess from your Graveyard to your hand. Erste also has a Quick Effect that you can activate if you control a Valkyrie other than Erste. This effect lets you banish a monster from your opponent’s Graveyard once per turn to transform Erste’s Attack Points into the Attack Points of the banished monster until the end of the turn.

Special Summon Valkyrie Dritte, Valkyrie Zweite, and Valkyrie Erste from your hand with Ride of the Valkyries to activate all of their effects! That’ll make it possible for you to defeat your opponent in a single turn, just like Zigfried did in the original animated series!

After reading Valkyrie Erste’s effect, you may be wondering, “What’s Mischief of the Time Goddess?”. Mischief of the Time Goddess is a Quick-Play Spell Card that is just as important to the Valkyrie strategy as the Valkyries themselves.

At the end of your Battle Phase, if all monsters you control are Valkyrie monsters, you can activate Mischief of the Time Goddess and send it to the Graveyard to skip to the start of the Battle Phase of your next turn. By doing so, you’ll be able to pass over your End Phase, eliminating the drawback of Ride of the Valkyries that would otherwise shuffle all of your monsters back into your Deck. In addition, Mischief of the Time Goddess will make it easier for you to wipe out an opponent without him or her taking another turn, since it’ll essentially let all of your Valkyries attack twice.

Mischief of the Time Goddess is also easy to get into your hand. In addition to being returnable with the effect of Valkyrie Erste, Ride of the Valkyries has an effect that lets you banish it from the Graveyard to add Mischief of the Time Goddess from your Deck to your hand. You can even banish Ride of the Valkyries from your Graveyard with this effect during the turn it’s sent there, ensuring that you almost always have Mischief of the Time Goddess when you need it.

Once you activate Mischief of the Time Goddess, your opponent will be helpless to defend against it. Neither player can activate cards or effects in response to its activation. It can’t be activated as Chain Link 2 or higher, but once you activate it, your opponent will immediately realize his or her imminent defeat. Fortunately for your opponent, if he or she does survive the double-onslaught of your Valkyries, you can’t use Mischief of the Time Goddess again to get a third Battle Phase in a row. You’ll have to wait for your opponent to take a turn before you can activate Mischief of the Time Goddess once more.

The new Valkyrie cards in Shadows in Valhalla have awesome effects and lots of cool synergies. You can try them out when Shadows in Valhalla releases on today!
