October 3rd, 2014

When the dust settles from the Swiss rounds at this weekend’s YCS in Dallas and one round of playoff competition is completed, the 16 remaining Duelists in the tournament will assemble a brand new Deck on the spot in a Battle Pack 3: Monster League draft! Booster Draft is a relatively new part of Dueling, and many Duelists have never actually seen a real draft in progress. If you’re one of them, or if you have seen/played in drafts and you’re just looking for some tips or insight on different potential strategies in Battle Pack 3: Monster League draft, then have we got the videos for you! Dissection of a Battle Pack 3 Draft – Part 2

August 8th, 2014

Have you read part 1? Go do that!

Here’s how my card pool looked going into the second draft round:

Dodger Dragon
Jurrac Protops
Lion Alligator
Mythical Beast Cerberus

Bashing Shield
Murmur of the Forest

Zero Gravity
Zero Gravity
Miracle Locus
Telepathic Power

A 50/50 monster/not monster split is good, so I was on track there:
Monsters: 8
Spells: 2
Traps: 5

Let’s look at card roles, keeping in mind that cards can fulfill multiple roles:
1900+ Monsters – 2
1700+ Monsters – 5 or 6 (depending on where Cerberus falls)
Defensive Monsters – 2

Battle Outcome Changers – 7, Total
Battle Stoppers – 3 (Gentlemander, Zero Gravity x2)
Battle Position Changers – 3 (Murmur of the Forest, Zero Gravity x2)
Equips – 2 (Bashing Shield, Metalmorph)
Pumps -2 (Metalmorph, Miracle Locus)

A little low on equips. Let’s see if we can work on that as much as possible.

But my main goal at this point was to pump up my monster count. With just 5 1700+ monsters (plus Cerberus), this needed some work.

I was very confident with my Trap selection. Obviously I’m going to pump that where I can, but main priorities were:
1. High ATK monsters
2. More equips
3. Traps and other surprises

Pick #1, Available Cards: Cursed Armaments / Dark Crusader / Forbidden Lance / Koa’ki Meiru War Arms / Machine King Prototype / Miniaturize / Murmur of the Forest / Noble Arms – Caliburn / Reptilianne Gorgon / Shreddder / Swamp Mirrorer / Trident Warrior / Tutan Mask / Valhalla, Hall of the Fallen / Wind-Up Juggler Read more…

Dissection of a Battle Pack 3 Draft – Part 1

August 8th, 2014

Battle Pack 3: Monster League is now available in stores, and Official Tournament Stores around the world have begun hosting official draft and sealed play events.

Remember that the top cut rounds of our Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series tournaments are done through Battle Pack draft play, so make sure you get some heavy practice in at draft as well as constructed play, especially if you’re planning to attend the first YCS of the Monster League era, in Toronto on September 6.

Also remember, as always, the special Monster League rule for BP3 sealed and draft play: All monsters are all Types.

We’ve had requests for some more hands-on insight on draft strategy. So I dug up one of our drafting test sessions from when BP3 was under development, and I’m going to walk you through all 45 draft picks I made, and my thought process for each.

At the end, I’ll go over a “what if?” scenario, too, which will put things in a little different perspective from the first time you read this.

So let’s get to it!

Building Battle Pack 3 – Part 4: More Monster Tricks

July 26th, 2014

Back again to talk about some more cool stuff you can do in Battle Pack 3: Monster League, using the special All-Monsters-Are-All-Types rule!

Trident Arsenal

Arsenal Bug is a Level 3 monster with 2000 ATK & DEF. His only drawback is that you need another Insect in play, or his stats are cut in half.

Fortunately, in Monster League Play, this turns into just needing another monster on the field. Easy to do!

For a fantastic opening combo, Summon Trident Warrior. This 1800 ATK monster lets you Special Summon a Level 3 monster from your hand, like Arsenal Bug. Read more…
