Breakers of Shadow: Guiding Ariadne and Ultimate Providence

Counter Traps are some of the most powerful cards in the game. They’re so good that roughly one in every five has an activation cost – they’d be too strong if you could activate them for free. Veteran Duelists might remember that once upon a time years ago, there was an entire Deck that revolved around Bountiful Artemis, a Level 4 Fairy-Type that draws you a card whenever a Counter Trap resolves.

But those activation costs can be pretty high, and Counter Traps are usually difficult to search – having the right answer at the right time can come down to the heart of the cards. Or at least it did in the past! On the Next Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s… Counter Traps and Jack Atlas!

This weekend, 5D’s fans can tune in to see the finale of Yusei’s Duel against the Guard Robot, the Counter Trap wielding security robot sent to prevent Yusei from retrieving his stolen engine program. The Guard Robot’s strategy is based around calculating every move Yusei makes based on his previous Duels, and using Counter Traps to stop them.

Counter Traps are a special type of Trap Card. They’re used to cancel out your opponent’s moves. Most of them negate something your opponent does, but a few of them just make your opponent do something they don’t want to, like discard cards that they just drew.
