Nekroz may have stolen the spotlight at YCS Tacoma, but they aren’t the only Ritual Monsters out there that can compete! The 2014-2015 Dueling season has been something of a renaissance for Ritual Monsters, featuring at least 1 new Ritual Monster in each booster starting with Duelist Alliance and ramping up to 7 in The Secret Forces. Ritual Monsters have evolved quite a bit since Saffira, Queen of Dragons debuted in Duelist Alliance, but she’s still my favorite of the new bunch and an excellent monster in her own right. Can you even name another Ritual Monster that gives you access to a theoretically infinite number of copies of Effect Veiler, Honest and Artifact Lancea?

Sometimes it takes a while for a new card to catch on. Legacy of the Valiant had a ton of big, flashy cards for new strategies and old fan-favorites, so some hidden gems passed unnoticed. Now, with Regional Qualifiers putting these cards to the test, an often overlooked Trap Card is emerging as a big difference-maker in tournaments.

Powerful Spell Cards are the fuel that ignites many of today’s most power strategies. Every now and again, a card is released that’s clearly powerful, but doesn’t end up seeing a lot of play. You never want to lose track of these cards because they have a habit of popping up when you least expect them and suddenly appearing all over the place! Pinpoint Guard is one such card – even though it’s not being used a lot right now, it’s extremely powerful and works really well in a lot of Decks, so it could wind up everywhere in the future. Judgment of the Light had a bunch of new Synchro Monsters, but until we saw what the new Advanced Format would look like, it was tough to gauge which Synchros would be the most successful. With YCS Toronto and weeks of Regional Qualifiers now in the books, we know which Synchros are being played; which ones are still underappreciated; and which decks can run them.
