Welcome to Wotansday Night Matchup! This week we’re going to pit the reigning YCS-winning Deck against the newest reinvigorated old-school strategy, in a matchup that’s sure to define the month of February! In a clash between ancient tomb keepers and legendary Warriors, who will win? It’s Gravekeeper’s versus Samurais in tonight’s Wotansday Night Matchup!
Tonight’s Monday Night Matchup pits the winning Deck from YCS Atlanta against the winning Deck from YCS Milan: Gravekeeper’s VS Plant Synchro! Both of these tremendous tournaments were held during the same weekend, but their Top Decks were very different. The pace of Plant Synchro clashes with the crippling control of Gravekeeper’s, making for a unique matchup that’s frequently favorable for the Duelist wielding the tomb-keepers.
Thanks to the release of Starstrike Blast, a lot of new Decks emerged on the scene at YCS Atlanta. One of those is the Formula Monarch Deck. Based around the Frog Monarch Deck of last summer, Formula Monarchs can be built in various ways, but they all share the same basic building blocks: Treeborn Frog and Fishborg Blaster.
Originally released in Pharaonic Guardian back in 2003, the Gravekeeper monsters have been a part of the game for years now, most notably, Gravekeeper’s Spy. Unfortunately, Gravekeepers as a complete strategy had never really managed to shine at the top of the premier tournament level, until now! Thanks to Gravekeeper’s Recruiter, a new exclusive from Starstrike Blast, and frequent use of Royal Tribute, three Gravekeeper Decks took the top three spots in YCS Atlanta.

Gravekeeper cards originally come from Pharonic Guardian, a booster pack from 2003! Ever since then cards like Gravekeeper’s Spy, Gravekeeper’s Guard and Necrovalley have become firm favorites of Duelists and made their way into several top Decks throughout the history of the game. Experienced Duelists have fond memories of these cards, and if you’re new to the game you can meet them for the first time in Structure Deck: Marik.
