Finals Feature Match: David Keener Versus Patrick Hoban

July 15th, 2013

2012 Duelists entered, and now only 2 remain. After 11 Swiss Rounds and 5 rounds of Single Elimination, it all came down to this. 20-year-old David Keener from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is Dueling against 20-year-old Patrick Hoban from Atlanta, Georgia in a Duel that will determine the outcome of this tournament. Keener is using a Prophecy Deck, while Hoban is using Dragon Rulers. Duelists have been having heated debates all weekend over which of these 2 Decks is strongest, and now, one of these Decks – and one of these Duelists – is about to secure its place in history as the victor of the 2013 WCQ. It’s time to Duel!

Duel One

Hoban started off Duel 1 by discarding Reactan, Dragon Ruler of Pebbles and Redox, Dragon Ruler of Boulders to Special Summon Redox, Dragon Ruler of Boulders from his Deck in Defense Position. Next, he banished Reactan and Redox from his Graveyard to Special Summon Blaster, Dragon Ruler of Infernos from his hand. He used his banished Redox’s effect to add Reactan, Dragon Ruler of Pebbles from his Deck to his hand. Next, Hoban combined his Redox with Blaster in order to Xyz Summon Mecha Phantom Beast Dracossack in Attack Position! He detached an Xyz Material from Dracossack to Special Summon 2 Tokens to the field, and Tributed both of them to Summon Blaster.

Dracossack and Blaster

Keener opened up with Kycoo the Ghost Destroyer, Solemn Judgment, Spellbook of the Master, Book of Moon, and 2 copies of Spellbook Star Hall. He Set Book of Moon before passing his turn

Hoban attacked directly with Blaster and Dracossack to drop Keener down to 2600 Life Points.

Keener drew Spellbook Magician of Prophecy next turn! He Summoned it to the field and activated its effect to add Spellbook of Secrets from his Deck to his hand. Next, he activated Spellbook Star Hall. He used Spellbook of Secrets to search his Deck for a copy of Spellbook of Power to add to his hand, and put a Spell Counter on his Spellbook Star Hall. Next, he used Spellbook of Power to increase the ATK of his Spellbook Magician of Prophecy, and added a Spell Counter to Spellbook Star Hall. He used Spellbook of the Master next, copying Spellbook of Power, giving another 1000 ATK to Spellbook Magician of Prophecy and adding another counter to Spellbook Star Hall. He attacked Dracossack with his 2800 ATK Magician, destroying it in battle. Next, Keener added Spellbook of Fate and Spellbook of Secrets to his hand with the effects of his 2 Spellbooks of Power. Keener Set Solemn Judgment and Spellbook of Fate before ending his turn.

Hoban activated Heavy Storm and Keener paid 1300 Life Points to negate it with Solemn Judgment!

Next, Hoban discarded Reactan and Maxx “C” from his hand to Special Summon Redox from his Deck in Defense Position. He then banished Reactan and Maxx “C” from his Graveyard to Special Summon Redox from his Graveyard, in Attack Position. He then Summoned Effect Veiler, and Tuned it with his Defense Position Redox to Synchro Summon Scrap Dragon. Next, Hoban tried using his Scrap Dragon’s effect to have it destroy his own Redox, along with Keener’s face-down Book of Moon; but Keener Chained Book of Moon to put Scrap Dragon face-down! Redox was destroyed by Scrap Dragon’s effect. Hoban banished both copies of Redox from his Graveyard to Special Summon Blaster next, and then declared an attack with his first Blaster. With only 1300 Life Points remaining and impending attacks coming from 2 Blasters, Keener immediately offered the handshake.

Keener added Spellbook of Fate to his hand with the effect of Spellbook of Power, and Set it in Main Phase 2. In his End Phase, Keener added Spellbook of Secrets and Spellbook of Eternity from his Deck to his hand with the effect of Spellbook of Judgment.

Hoban activated Gold Sarcophagus to banish Heavy Storm from his Deck so that he would be able to reclaim it 2 turns later. He immediately passed thereafter.

Keener drew Solemn Warning next turn. He activated Spellbook of Fate to banish Spellbook of Judgment and Spellbook of Secrets from his Graveyard and put Spellbook Magician of Prophecy face-down. Next, he activated Spellbook of Eternity to add Spellbook of Judgment to his hand. He activated Spellbook of Judgment and then Flip Summoned Spellbook Magician of Prophecy, using its effect to add Spellbook Star Hall from his Deck to his hand. He activated Spellbook Star Hall and then used Spellbook of Secrets, adding a Spell Counter to Spellbook Star Hall. He added Spellbook Magician of Prophecy to his hand with the effect of his Spellbook of Secrets, and Summoned it to add Spellbook of Fate to his hand. Keener attacked directly with both Spellbook Magicians of Prophecy and Jowgen, dropping Hoban down to 6300 Life Points. Keener Set Spellbook of Fate before entering his End Phase. In his End Phase, he added Spellbook of Secrets and Spellbook Star Hall to his hand with the effect of Spellbook of Judgment.
