With eight Rounds of Swiss-style tournament play, we are now halfway through Day 1! Only 30 of our 599 Duelists are still undefeated with perfect records, so the strongest and most consistent strategies are already gravitating towards the top tables. With that in mind, we decided to check out what was being played at Table 1.
We interviewed the Coronel family earlier today, so we’ve already seen Mexican Champion Juan Carlos Coronel once so far in coverage. But now we’ll see him in action, piloting Qliphorts against Cesar Alvarado Ramos’ Star Seraph Shaddolls. The kicker? Galileo Mauricio De Obaldia Soza is a worldwide fan-favorite and one of the most decorated Duelists in the room! He has countless YCS and WCQ top cut appearances. He won the Panama National Championships in 2009, 2011, and 2012. He won the World Championship in 2010, and then made a repeat showing with a third place finish one year later in 2011. One year ago, Jose Lagunes shocked the world by winning the 2014 Central American World Championship Qualifier with Mermails. In the era of Infernoids versus Hand Artifact Traptrix, Lagunes played what was virtually a rogue Deck to win the title of Central American Champion. While over 1,100 Duelists have earned their invites to the Main Event this weekend, and a little under 100 for the Dragon Duel, hundreds more have turned out to compete in Last Chance Qualifiers – the final chance to win entry into the 2015 Central American World Championship Qualifier! Competitors here on Friday are competing in single elimination flights, with the winner of each mini-tournament scoring a WCQ Zefra game mat, and a seat in tomorrow’s tournament.
