Top 4 Feature Match: Sean Montague vs. Vincent Pagila

Both of these competitors were now headed to the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG World Championship to represent the United States, but for now, 2 Rounds still remained in this tournament, and the winner would become the 2010 U.S. National Champion! Only 3 Rounds remained in this tournament – the winner of this Match would be traveling to Long Beach to compete in the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG World Championship in August, and would have a 1-in-4 shot at becoming the U.S. National Champion right here today! They’d also score a set of the Darklord prize cards. For each of the 4 Matches in the Top 8, the winner of that Match would be invited into the 2010 Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG World Championship in Long Beach, California, to compete against several Duelists from around the world for the honor of being named the world champion. Jay Hornung made it here with his Frog Monarch Deck and Chris Arantes made it here with X-Sabers. This is the most anxious either Duelist has ever been before playing, and in mere moments, we would know which of these Duelists would advance to the Top 4 and compete in the World Championship. The U.S. finalists have been decided! Chris Arantes, Daniel LaMartina, Sean Montague, and Vincent Pagila will represent the United States at the Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME World Championship next month in Long Beach, California.

But the Dueling isn’t over yet. There’s still the question of which of these 4 Duelists will be the U.S. National Champion. Two more rounds of single elimination Dueling remain.

Top 16 Feature Match: Grant Kelly vs. Carl Waite

Sometimes, competitors in a long tournament will have to play each other in both the Swiss Rounds, and again in the playoff Rounds. As the undefeated field narrows in the Swiss Rounds, it becomes more likely for Duelists with the same record to Duel each other, and make it to the playoffs. Deck Profile: Ben McDowell’s Dimension / Eatos Deck

Heading into the Top 32, with almost 1200 competitors eliminated by that point, and in a field of X-Sabers, Blackwings, Gadgets, Gladiator Beasts, and Frog Decks, 1 competitor stood apart from the crowd. QQ stands for Quick Questions!

Although nearly 1200 competitors showed up to compete in the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG World Championship Qualifier, many others took advantage of the many public events offered throughout the weekend. Duelists had a blast competing in the ATTACK OF THE GIANT CARDS!!, Go for the Gold, Pegasus League Deck Challenge, and Win-a-Mat Tournaments. Deck Profile: Tom Walter’s Plant Deck (2010 edition)

Tom Walter loves playing Plants. Last year, he entered the 2009 Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG National Championship with his Plant Deck. This year, he updated his Plant Deck and adapted it to the new field of Decks. He came back using his favorite Deck, this time competing in the 2010 World Championship Qualifier.

Tom Walter’s Hamster Plant Deck specializes at taking his opponent’s monsters and using them against him. With 3 copies of Mark of the Rose in his Main Deck and tons of Plants to remove to activate them, no monster can safely be left on the field against Walter. Walter also uses Super-Nimble Mega Hamster to Special Summon Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter or X-Saber Airbellum from his Deck, giving him monsters to use in Synchro Summons or to Tribute for the Summon of Caius the Shadow Monarch. Deck Profile: Courtney Waller’s Blackwing Deck

Yesterday we saw an impressive showing from up-and-coming Duelist Courtney Waller, as he narrowly lost to Ryan Spicer in Round 7. We didn’t actually get to see most of the cards that got Waller selected for his Feature Match. The Duel was fast and intense, and only lasted a matter of minutes. But Waller is one of a handful of Blackwing Duelists who made Top 64, and his success was clearly due to some of the creative tech choices he made in building his Deck. Check it out! Read more…
