Round 9 Feature Match: Sang Bui vs. Adam Corn

July 10th, 2010

This Match would pit the 2007 U.S. National Champion, Adam Corn, against 2004 U.S. National Championship Runner-Up Sang Bui. Both of these competitors are from Southern California and each knows the other through previous Dueling. Bui is playing X-Sabers here today, while Corn is running Gladiator Beasts. Read more…

Round 8 Feature Match: Michael Glowacki vs. Blake Hurdle

July 10th, 2010

Blake Hurdle is a rising 12-year-old Duelist from California, with a 6-1 record heading into Round 8 with X-Sabers. His opponent, Michael Glowacki from Chicago, is also running X-Sabers and has the same 6-1 record. X-Sabers were a popular Deck throughout the day, and it’s no surprise that these 2 Duelists at Table 7 are running them. Read more…

Round 7 Feature Match: Ryan Spicer vs. Courtney Waller

July 10th, 2010

Ryan Spicer is a former YCS Champion, and no stranger to the top tables at Worlds-Qualifying tournaments. He’s playing X-Sabers, and is currently undefeated (6-0) heading into Round 7. His opponent is Courtney Waller, a Blackwing Duelist who’s also undefeated. Read more…

Round 6 Feature Match: Jimi Johnson vs. Naveen Shankar

July 10th, 2010

Naveen Shankar became a Dragon Duel Champion with his Blackwing Deck at last year’s Dragon Duel Championship in Pittsburgh. Now, he’s competing in the World Championship Qualifier and holds a 4-1 record with Blackwings, heading into Round 6. His opponent, Jimi Johnson, has the same record as Shankar and is using a Frog FTK Deck in today’s tournament. Read more…

Round 5 Feature Match: Jerry Hemphill vs. Alex Mitchell

July 10th, 2010

Alex Mitchell is known for two things: playing his spaceships Deck and being well-dressed at events. “This is the third time I’ve done this this year,” he beamed at the start of this feature match. “Hey, and I get a picture taken!” Mitchell is playing a new version of his “Spaceships” deck, newly christened “Thunder Ships” with the addition of Thunder King Rai-Oh. Mitchell is always playing his signature Deck in big events like this one. We’ve never seen him run anything else, and we’ve never seen anybody else run it. Mitchell is 4-0 so far.

His opponent is another undefeated competitor: Frog Monarch Duelist Jerry Hemphill. With a tight, conservative style, Hemphill had won his way to the top tables this afternoon. But would he know how to defeat Mitchell’s unique strategy? Hemphill actually didn’t know what he was playing against, and was basing his knowledge of the matchup strictly on what was said at the Feature Match table: “I know he’s got a spaceship in it,” he stated, laughing in a friendly way. Round 4 Feature Match: Andrew Fredella vs. Austin Kulman

July 10th, 2010

Austin Kulman won the U.S. National Championship in 2006 in San Francisco, and represented the United States at the World Championship that year in Tokyo. He’s back once again to compete for entrance into the 2010 Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG World Championship. His opponent is Andrew Fredella, who took 3rd place at the recent YCS in Chantilly, Virginia. Fredella took that 3rd place spot with his X-Saber Deck, and he’s back using it again today against Kulman’s X-Sabers. Read more…

Round 3 Feature Match: Chris Bowling vs. Eric Dunson

July 10th, 2010

Chris Bowling won the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG U.S. National Championship in 2008, becoming the U.S. Champion. Today he’s looking to repeat that performance, and is 2-0 so far with X-Sabers. His opponent is New York’s Eric Dunson. He’s also 2-0 here today, one of many Duelists in the WCQ playing Blackwings. If he can take early control of the Duel with something like Royal Oppression, or even a key Icarus Attack, he could walk away from this table victorious. Read more…

Round 2 Feature Match: Dan Quach vs. Nathan Raabe

July 10th, 2010

Dan Quach is running a card in his Deck that I’m willing to bet no other World Championship Qualifier competitor this weekend even considered playing. Yet, it is a card so powerful, it rivals the Egyptian God Card, Slifer the Sky Dragon. That’s right – Dan Quach is using the Sacred Beast, Uria, Lord of Searing Flames in his Deck. But will the power of his Sacred Beast allow him to advance undefeated in the tournament, against Nathan Raabe’s Infernity Deck? Read more…

Round 1 Feature Match: Sean Eng vs. Kris Ferber

July 10th, 2010

The winner of this weekend’s tournament will be the U.S. National Champion for the next year. Last year, that honor went to Kris Ferber from Albany, New York with his Synchro Cat Deck. Today, he’s here defending that title with his Infernities. His opponent, Sean Eng from San Francisco, California, won’t make that easy. Eng is running a Frog Monarch Deck with Spiritual Water Art – Aoi in his Main Deck to discard Ferber’s cards as soon as he draws them. He’s also using Light and Darkness Dragon and other high-level monsters to limit Ferber’s plays. Read more…
