Top 16 Feature Match: Alan Garcia Alvarez Versus Angel Zayren Flores Covarrubias

June 12th, 2016

How did we miss THIS all weekend?

Alan Garcia Alvarez is playing what might come to be regarded as the Deck of the tournament here at the WCQ: a hybrid deck in the style of oldschool “Monster Mash” strategies, packing 39 monsters and just 5 spell cards.  Kaijus, Speedroids, Burning Abyss, Gallis the Star Beast… the Deck’s packed with surprises, and now we’ll get to see it in action.

But his opponent is the three-time YCS winner Angel Zayren Flores Covarrubias, one of the most successful career Duelists in the history of the game!  We saw Flores take a decisive win in our Top 64 Feature Match, where he handily defeated Mario Andres Enriquez Garcia in a very quick 2-1 victory.  Flores is playing Demise Kozmos, and this match-up’s going to pit Flores’ incredible wealth of experience against Alvarez’s off-the-wall innovation.  Will Alvarez catch the Champ off guard?  Or will Flores use his experience and years of insight to adapt on the fly.

Top 64 Feature Match: Angel Zayren Flores Covarrubias Versus Mario Andres Enriquez Garcia

June 12th, 2016

Angel Zayren Flores Covarrubias is one of the most decorated Duelists in the tournament today, with not one, not two, but a whopping three YCS wins in his illustrious Dueling career!  He’s 8-2 this weekend with Demise Kozmos, the emerging third variant of the Kozmo theme that first rose to prominence just two weeks ago, at YCS Providence.  His opponent is Mario Andres Enriquez, piloting Extra Deck Monarchs.  This one is anybody’s game, but Majesty’s Fiend could become a big factor if Garcia can get it into play.

Round 10 Feature Match: Alonso Valente Llerenas Versus Guillermo Villicana Santillan

June 12th, 2016

Our Round 9 Top Table Update revealed that at least two Yosenju Duelists had a strong shot at making the Top 64 this weekend, and when we saw that Alonso Valente Llerenas had won his Round 9 Match, we wanted to see his Yosenjus in action.  The Yosenju deck plays Card of Demise and a deep trap lineup of deadly floodgate cards, creating control-oriented set-ups that keep your opponent from playing the game.

No lock lasts forever, but since Yosenjus offer a string of extra

Normal Summons, the lock doesn’t have to last long.  Just long enough for a couple turns of unopposed attacks.  In a tournament where so many Matches have become grind games going to time, that speed and overwhelming early game make Yosenjus a strong bet.

Llerenas traveled here this weekend from Tijuana, and his opponent this round is Queretaro’s Guillermo Villicana Santillan, playing Monarchs.  Monarchs are the most-represented theme in the tournament this weekend, and at the top tables right now, so this would’ve been a priority match-up for Llerenas when he was building his Deck.  This should be interesting to watch.

Round 6 Feature Match: Irving Camiruaga Gil Versus Ivan Omar Hernandez Orta

June 11th, 2016

So far we’ve Feature Matched last year’s Central American and Dragon Duel Champions, a National Champion, and a YCS Champion.  With three Rounds of competition left in Day 1, how about some fresh faces?

We grabbed Irving Camiruaga Gil and Ivan Omar Hernandez Orta right off Table 1, currently the highest-ranked Duelists in the tournament.  Gil is from Mexico City and is running Pendulum Magicians, while Orta is from San Luis Potosi piloting Burning Knights.

Both competitors are doing exceedingly well with undefeated records, but in just a few minutes only one of those records would still be intact. Let’s find out which one makes it.
