KONAMI DIGITAL ENTERTAINMENT, INC. TO HOST TERRITORIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS IN NORTH AMERICA, CENTRAL AMERICA, AND SOUTH AMERICA

April 21st, 2022

Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc. (KONAMI) is thrilled to announce Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME (TCG) Championships for 2022 in the individual territories of North America, Central America, and South America this Summer.

As mentioned on our official social media channels, due to the circumstances surrounding the current global situation, the Yu-Gi-Oh! World Championship 2022 will not be held this year. We apologize to everyone looking forward to the event and appreciate your understanding. In place of the World Championship, each TCG territory will be holding a Championship event to celebrate the accomplishments of all Duelists in 2022.

The North America Championship will be held the weekend of July 16-17 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center located in the Chicago suburb of Rosemont, Illinois.

In Latin America, National Championships will be held throughout the region to determine each country’s National Champion, in addition to awarding invites for the Central and South America Championships to be held in Mexico City, Mexico and Santiago, Chile respectively, in June.  National Champions will earn paid travel and accommodations to the territorial Championships of their region for a shot at their Championship title.

Separately, territorial Championships will also be held in Europe and Oceania.

Each territory will also host a Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG Dragon Duel Championship for younger Duelists born in 2008 or later.

As the Yu-Gi-Oh! World Championship 2022 will not be held and Duelists have been competing to earn World Qualifying Points (WQP) starting in the 2019-2020 season, we are making a change to the 2023 WQP Playoff.  We are expanding the 2023 WQP Playoff to 32 Duelists. The top 16 WQP earners at the end of the 2021-22 season will earn a spot in the 2023 WQP Playoff, and then a new season will start after the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG Championship this summer and the top 16 WQP earners in the 2022-23 season will earn their spot in the 2023 WQP Playoff as well. A Duelist can only earn one spot in the 2023 WQP Playoff, so if they earn a spot at the end of the 2021-22 season, and finish in the top 16 for the 2022-23 season, their spot for the 2022-23 season would pass down to the next Duelist with the highest WQP total.

Today, the popular Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG is available across the globe, with products distributed in more than 80 countries and 9 languages, to be enjoyed by fans of all ages.

New Addendums to KDE-US Tournament Policy

April 20th, 2022

Two brand-new addendums and one updated addendum to KDE-US Tournament Policy have recently been posted, and we’d like to give you a quick introduction to each one.  In this article, we will explain what each one is for, and outline the basic information you can expect to find in each document

The new documents are the Official KDE-US Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME Tournament Policy: COVID-19 Addendum and the Official KDE-US Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME Tournament Policy:  Remote Duel Addendum. The updated addendum is the Official KDE-US Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME Tournament Policy: Speed Duel Addendum.

Remember, reading through this article isn’t a substitute for reading the addendums themselves! You will want to have a look at all three of these documents to ensure you understand them clearly. We recommend having a copy of the addendum open so you can refer to it, while looking through this article.

What’s the point of Tournament Policy, anyway?

Tournament Policy documents help keep events consistent, so that attendees will always know what to expect at any KDE-US Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME (TCG) event. Everyone who attends a KDE-US Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG tournament is expected to read, understand, and adhere to all Tournament Policy and Penalty Guideline documents. For a complete understanding of tournament policies, please read the main documents:

And these addendums:

Why addendums? Why don’t you just add this information in to the main documents?

Putting more specialized information – for alternate formats, or specific circumstances – into a shorter, separate document makes it easier to access the information that is different; and keeps us from having to repeat the information that is the same.  While you may still need to refer to the longer documents for complete, general information, the addendum gets the specialized information to you quickly.

In instances where the addendum policy and general policy appear to conflict, the addendum policy will supersede the general policy.

Let’s start with the first new addendum!

Official KDE-US Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME Tournament Policy: COVID-19 Addendum

Some tournament locations will need to adapt policy somewhat to better accommodate changes necessary due to COVID-19.   This document explains how to adapt in-person events to comply with improved health and hygiene practices.

This document is broken up into three sections as follows:

  • I. Duelist Responsibilities
  • II. Tournament Play
  • III. Reporting Match Results

What is new about this document?

There are some specific instructions about hygiene, social distancing, and personal protective equipment for events occurring during a pandemic.  Some tournament actions, such as shuffling and reporting Match results, can be handled differently as a result. The addendum explains how to address these concerns.

There is also expanded information on the uses of Yu-Gi-Oh! NEURON (NEURON) during tournament play.

What does this mean?

You should read through the addendum before heading to any Tier 1 or 2 events now that in-person play is returning. Always talk to the Tournament Organizer or the Head Judge for the event if you have any questions.

Now, let’s take a look at the next addendum!

Official KDE-US Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME Tournament Policy:  Remote Duel Addendum

If you have participated in Remote Duel or read through the Remote Duel Best Practice Guide, you will already be familiar with most of the contents of this addendum.  There are quite a lot of changes to be made when playing in Remote Duel vs. in-person events, and the Remote Duel Addendum will guide you through them. This addendum covers both TCG and Yu-Gi-Oh! DUEL LINKS (Duel Links) Remote Duel events.

  • This document is broken up into seven sections as follows:
  • I. Tournament Information TCG
  • II. Tournament Play – TCG
  • III. Tournament Information – Duel Links
  • IV. Tournament Play – Duel Links
  • V. Card Legality – TCG
  • VI. Infractions and Penalties
  • VII. Contact Information

What is new about this document?

This document covers similar information as the Best Practice Guide, with a focus on policy-specific instructions. It is separated into policies for TCG tournaments and for Duel Links tournaments, as there are some differences

What does this mean?

Actions that may have previously been viewed as “suggested” or “recommended” are now arranged in an official addendum to Tournament Policy.  You will need to read through this addendum carefully before you participate in Remote Duel tournaments.

And finally, an update to a previous addendum!

Official KDE-US Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME Tournament Policy: Speed Duel Addendum

This document will explain in detail what to expect from Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG Speed Duel (Speed Duel) events as well as what you’ll need to keep in mind to have a smooth tournament experience. It has been updated slightly from the previous version.

This document is broken up into five sections as follows:

  • I. Tournament Information
  • II. Tournament Play
  • III. Constructed Deck Information
  • IV. Sealed Deck Information
  • V. Card Legality

Section I.
Subsection B: Time Limi
ts

What changed?

Speed Duel rounds are now 40 minutes in length.

What does this mean?

Speed Duel rounds were 30 minutes previously, so you now have an additional ten minutes per round.

Section II.
Subsection B: Skill Cards

What changed?

Rules for Skill Cards have expanded since the previous document. The new document provides additional clarification on how Skill Cards should work.

What does this mean?

Some of the rules you may have used previously for Skill Cards will be explained more clearly, and other rules are different. Make sure to read through this section carefully before participating in your next Speed Duel.

Section IV. Sealed Deck Information
Subsection A: General

What changed?

There is now a maximum Main Deck size of 30 cards for Sealed play.

What does this mean?

You can’t use every card you pull in your Deck. You will have to choose carefully

Section V. Card Legality
Subsection B: Forbidden & Limited List

What changed?

While there is no general Forbidden & Limited List for Speed Duel, however, at certain Tier 2 or higher events there may be an event-specific Forbidden & Limited List.

What does this mean?

KDE-US may decide to implement a Forbidden & Limited List for specific Speed Duel events (Tier 2 or higher). If this is the case, the list will be included in any related event FAQs or Operations Documents.
It does not mean that the Tournament Organizer or Head Judge can implement their own Forbidden & Limited List, and it does not mean that there will always be a Forbidden & Limited List for a Tier 2 or higher Speed Duel event.

Any list provided for an event will apply to that event only and should not be treated as applying to any other event.

There’s a lot to take in here for Tournament Policy with all these new addendums, so please take your time to go over them carefully to ensure you know what to expect at your next event. Tournament Policy is often overlooked as Duelists focus on card text and rulings, but it’s every bit as important a part of tournament preparedness.

We hope you found this article helpful and informative!

Regional Qualifiers for the Battle of Chaos Season

February 10th, 2022

To the Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME (TCG) community –

As we monitor COVID-19 pandemic developments, we continue to take seriously the guidelines and recommendations from government health authorities and experts.

Regional Qualifiers for the Battle of Chaos (BACH)season will continue to be offered only as Remote Duel Events through the third week of March.  We are currently scheduling the first in-person BACH season Regional Qualifiers to take place the weekend of March 26-27 with strict adherence to local government guidelines. Remote Duel Regional Qualifiers will still be an option to those that are uncomfortable attending in-person events. As we continue to monitor the guidelines set forth by local health authorities, we will provide updates and make changes as necessary.

For future events on our schedule, we will provide news on those events as they become available. Please continue to visit our official Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG website and official social media channels on Twitter and Facebook for the latest information:

Those with non-press-related inquiries regarding this event and updates on future events and Organized Play initiatives are encouraged to contact us-opsupport@konami.com for more information.

We thank the Yu-Gi-Oh! community for their continued patience and understanding during this time.

Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG Statement Regarding the Status of YCS Las Vegas

January 14th, 2022

To the Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME (TCG) community –

As we monitor COVID-19 pandemic developments, we continue to take seriously the guidelines and recommendations from government health authorities and experts, including recent data from the CDC listing the risk level of COVID-19 as HIGH for Clark County in Nevada. Given the continued uncertainty surrounding the Omicron variant, and in recognizing our own responsibility to prioritize the health and safety of our entire Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG community, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the in-person Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series (YCS) event in Las Vegas, NV on February 26th and 27th. In lieu of the in-person event, we will host an online Remote Duel YCS tournament during the same weekend. The Remote Duel YCS will be open to all Duelists in North America including those that were not able to pre-register for YCS Las Vegas.

In addition, Regional Qualifiers for the Battle of Chaos (BACH)season will be offered only as Remote Duel Events for the month of February.  As the BACH Regional season extends through May we are hopeful that we can offer in-person Regional Qualifiers later in the season.  We will continue to monitor the guidelines set forth by local health authorities and provide updates as necessary.

We apologize if this has caused any inconvenience to those who may be affected as a result. Refunds for the entry fee will be made available for any registered Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG Duelists who do not choose to attend the alternate online Remote Duel YCS event. These refunds will be automatically performed after the Remote Duel YCS event. If you have any questions regarding registering for the Remote Duel YCS or your refund for YCS Las Vegas, please contact ygoreg@thesidedeck.com. Please note that even if you registered for YCS Las Vegas, you will need to register again for the Remote Duel YCS, if you would like to participate in that. In addition, all Duelists that registered for YCS Las Vegas will be offered priority registration for an upcoming YCS event.

For future events on our schedule, we remain committed to monitoring the developments daily and will provide updates on those events as they become available. Please continue to visit our official Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG website and official social media channels on Twitter and Facebook for the latest news and updates:

Those with non-press-related inquiries regarding this event and updates on future events and Organized Play initiatives are encouraged to contact us-opsupport@konami.com for more information.

We thank the Yu-Gi-Oh! community for their continued patience and understanding during this time.

World Qualifying Points for the 2021-2022 Organized Play Season

November 3rd, 2021

As Organized Play begins to resume for the 2021-2022 season, we have some exciting news for you about World Qualifying Points (WQP)! You’ve had a lot of questions about what to expect as this year starts to wind down, so let’s talk about WQP.

World Qualifying Points…what were those again?

We introduced World Qualifying Points (WQP) as an additional path to the World Championship in 2017. This program offered dedicated Duelists an opportunity to earn enough points to compete in a playoff for an invite to the Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME (TCG) World Championship.

  • WQP could be earned at any events which awarded invites to a World Championship Qualifier (WCQ).
    • Regional Qualifiers, Dragon Duels, OTS Championships, Nationals, or Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series (YCS) all awarded WQP.
  • Duelists watched a leaderboard to see how their WQP totals matched up against others in their territories.
  • Top-placed Duelists were invited to a World Qualifying Points playoff, usually held at their WCQ.

RIGHT! I remember now. So, what’s happening to Word Qualifying Points for 2022

Duelists have been anxious to know what will happen to the points they earned during the 2019-2020 Organized Play season!
Here’s what you need to know:

  • All WQP earned during the 2019-2020 Organized Play season will carry forward for 2021-2022.
  • That means any points you have accumulated will now count towards a World Qualifying Point Playoff at your 2022 World Championship Qualifier.
  • This applies to Duelists in all territories (KDE-US and KDE-E).
    • Just as before, the number of Duelists qualifying for this playoff will vary based on territory.
    • We will have more information on scheduling for these events soon.

You don’t need to worry about losing the WQP earned prior to the suspension of in-person play.  KDE-E and KDE-US will both roll all WQP earned in the 2019-2020 season over to the 2021-2022 season.

Will I be able to earn World Qualifying Points during the 2021-2022 Organized Play season?

This is a complex issue to manage, as we need to focus on the health and safety of our Duelists while providing them with the Organized Play events they enjoy. Since situations are different in different territories, the approach to earning WQP is also different according to territory.
Make sure you are reading the information for your territory.
Here’s how this will work:

KDE-US

  • Territories for KDE-US are North America and Latin America.
  • Duelists in these territories can earn WQP by competing in Remote Duel Regional Qualifiers.
    • This will begin with the BODE Regional season.
  • WQP will not be awarded at in-person Regional Qualifiers.
  • WQP will be awarded at Remote Duel YCS, starting with the December 2021 Remote Duel YCS
  • WQP will not be awarded at in-person YCS.

KDE-E

  • Territories for KDE-E are Europe (this includes Africa and the Middle East) and Oceania
  • These territories will not be offering Remote Duel Regionals, therefore no new WQP will be awarded for the 2021-2022 Organized Play season.
  • WQP will not be awarded at in-person Regional Qualifiers.
  • WQP will not be awarded at YCS
    • Remote Duel YCS will not award WQP
    • In-person YCS will not award WQP.
  • The current standings based on the 2019-2020 Organized Play season will be the final list for the WQP playoffs at the appropriate WCQ.

Why can’t I earn WQP at in-person events?

Travel, travel and MORE travel was the reliable way to earn WQP in previous years – Duelists who could attend as many events as possible and finish near the top of the standings for these events earned the most points.
We all know things are somewhat different now; and we do not want to put anyone in the situation where they feel like they have no choice but to travel.

  • While we do look forward to welcoming Duelists back to in-person events if they feel safe in participating, limiting WQP to Remote Duel removes pressure
  • By awarding WQP only for Remote Duel Regionals, Duelists can still earn WQP
  • Current WQP leaders will not be pressured to travel in order to maintain their ranking
  • Different states/provinces, countries, etc. have different types of limitations imposed on travel and crowds – by removing WQP from in-person events, Duelists living in areas with more restrictions are not placed at a disadvantage

When will we be able to see our points from 2019-2020?

We are working on information for the rest of the 2021-2022 Organized Play season and we are looking forward to sharing it with you! Expect news for events (both Remote Duel and in-person) later in the year, along with the WQP leaderboard and 2022 WCQ Invite lists.

OH! One last thing – what about my WCQ invite for 2020? Will that carry over too?

Yes, it will! If you earned an invite for your WCQ in 2020 don’t worry – it will be good for 2022.

If you did not get the chance to earn an invite for 2020 make sure to watch the Regional Qualifier schedules for your territory – you will soon have the chance to try for an invite for 2022! We hope you’re looking forward to Regionals, YCS, and other tournaments as we prepare for them, be they Remote Duel or otherwise, and we are excited to see you back again!
