Deck Profile: Curtis Bowles’ Counter Fairy Deck

September 4th, 2010

Several competitors are playing a Deck here today that we haven’t seen in months: Counter Fairies.  Those Duelists are hoping to take advantage of new trends in Advanced Format play.  A slower pace of play makes it easier to draw into the Deck’s lynchpin card, Bountiful Artemis; a Level 4 1600 ATK Fairy-Type monster that lets its controller draw a card every time a Counter Trap is activated.

Pot of Duality also helps the cause, giving more draws and more chances to get to the unsearchable Artemis.  With Heavy Storm gone, the Counter Fairy Duelist is also free to Set cards with impunity in most matchups.  Those three factors have caused a ton of renewed interest in the Counter Fairy strategy.

September 4th, 2010

With most competitors expecting today’s tournament to be slower, more stable, and less centered around One-Turn KO’s than previous Championship events this Summer, many Duelists are taking an interest in Monarch Decks.

Deck Profile: Dale Bellido’s Infernity Deck

September 4th, 2010

Infernities proved to be extremely popular here in Toronto this past Summer: so much so that while X-Sabers were dominating in the United States, Infernities were winning the Canadian World Championship Qualifier.  Aaron Noel took home the Canadian Championship, but it was fellow Canadians like Lazaro and Dale Bellido that first pioneered the Deck when it debuted at YCS Virginia.  They, and many more Canadians like them, continued to play the Deck for the bulk of the March 1st Advanced Format.

Deck Profile: James Neumann’s Synchro Dog Deck

September 4th, 2010

In the previous format, one Deck that didn’t get nearly as much love as it once had was Synchro Cat withFlamvell Firedog, Flamvell Magician, and Rekindling.. Using Flamvell Firedog, Flamvell Magician, Gravekeeper monsters, and Rescue Cat, this Flamvell Deck made very large waves at premier tournaments all over the world. Flamvell Firedog’s 1900 ATK, combined with the fantastic defense of Gravekeeper’s Spy and Super-Nimble Mega Hamster provide an excellent base to a strategy that Summons Level 8 Synchro Monsters at alarming speeds.

With the release of Duelist Revolution, a lot of great new cards became available for this Deck. With Solemn Warning, you’re able to protect your important monsters cards from things like Caius the Shadow Monarch and Black Rose Dragon. And thanks to Pot of Duality, you’re able to get exactly what you need when you need it, a very important factor in any Deck.

Now that Rescue Cat is no longer allowed in Advanced Format Decks due to the new Forbidden and Limited List as of September 1st, a new twist has to be put into motion in order to keep the Deck moving forward. James Neumann is one of the Duelists looking to make this twist happen.

Deck Profile: Kenneth McCarthy’s Scrap Deck

September 4th, 2010

Naturia, Beast, and Amazoness Decks all got big boosts from Duelist Revolution, but the only completely new Deck theme to make its debut in the set is Scraps: a new family of monsters based around reusing cards from the Graveyard, and Synchro Summoning a big attacker every turn.  Scrap Decks want to send Scrap Goblin and Scrap Beast, Level 3 and Level 4 Tuners respectively, to the Graveyard.  Then, they can Normal Summon the Level 4 Scrap Chimera, and its effect Special Summons either Tuner so it can be Tuned to the Chimera.

The Chimera can only Tune with other “Scrap” monsters, and it has to Summon “Scrap” Synchro Monsters, so you use it to Synchro Summon the Level 7 Scrap Archfiend and Level 8 Scrap Dragon. Both monsters have a lot of Attack Points, and Scrap Dragon also has an effect that simultaneously destroys 1 card on each side of the field once per turn. That effect is more than just good, its also the basis of a really strong strategy.
