Round 8 Feature Match: Jordan Grant VS Jarel Winston

September 4th, 2010

Astute Duelfans might remember 13 year-old Jordan Grant from his repeated Feature Match wins at his first YCS just weeks ago, at YCS Indianapolis.  While he played Frog Monarchs at Indy, he’s here in his second YCS outing piloting Quickdraw Dandwarrior.

His opponent is Jarel Winston, who has 4 Feature Matches to his name but only 1 Feature Match win!  Winston is running X-Sabers with Debris Dragon, and like Grant, he’s 6-1 heading into this Round.  Winston is a veteran of Championshi-level events, but hasn’t managed to win one yet.  Grant is one of the brighest new rising stars in the Dueling universe, and wants this win just as much as Winston.

Cody Gravelle is here from Niagara Falls playing Lightsworn today, he’s undefeated and looking to virtually lock himself into the top 16 by winning this match. His opponent is Josh Graham, an Orillia, Ontario native, who’s looking for the same thing. Both Duelists can’t win though, so something’s gotta give. Let’s see what happens in a throwback to an older format where Gladiator Beasts and Lightsworn were constantly at war.

Round 5 Feature Match: Mark Alan Johnson VS Sorosh Saberian

September 4th, 2010

This Match saw 2 of the tournament’s most successful Decks going head-to-head, as Mark Alan Johnson took Gladiator Beasts against Sorosh Saberian’s Quickdraw Dandywarrior Deck.  Both Duelists have had plenty of experience Dueling in Championship-level events, and this can be an unpredictable matchup, so it should make for a great Feature Match!

Deck Profile: Curtis Bowles’ Counter Fairy Deck

September 4th, 2010

Several competitors are playing a Deck here today that we haven’t seen in months: Counter Fairies.  Those Duelists are hoping to take advantage of new trends in Advanced Format play.  A slower pace of play makes it easier to draw into the Deck’s lynchpin card, Bountiful Artemis; a Level 4 1600 ATK Fairy-Type monster that lets its controller draw a card every time a Counter Trap is activated.

Pot of Duality also helps the cause, giving more draws and more chances to get to the unsearchable Artemis.  With Heavy Storm gone, the Counter Fairy Duelist is also free to Set cards with impunity in most matchups.  Those three factors have caused a ton of renewed interest in the Counter Fairy strategy.

Top Tables Update!

September 4th, 2010

We’re just over halfway through day 1 of YCS Toronto and there are currently 25 people left with perfect records, and here they are!

Table 1: Michael Fresco (Gladiator Beasts) Vs. Nik Ristoski (LIGHT Beatdown)

Table 2: Mark Alan Johnson (Gladiator Beasts) Vs. Sorosh Saberian (Quickdraw)

Table 3: Matt Peddle (Infernity) Vs. Johnny Tang (Blackwings)

Table 4: Robert Vissa (Absolute Zero) Vs. Steven Kuoch (Machina Gadgets)

Table 5: Bryan Ortiz (Blackwings) Vs. Dominic Lacaille (X-Sabers)
Table 6: Alex N. Vansant (Machina Gadgets) Vs. Bobby Barone (Gladiator Beasts)
Table 7: Nereg Torossian (X-Sabers) Vs. Ali Yassime (X-Sabers)
Table 8: Justin Reyes (X-Sabers) Vs. Logan Djuricin (Frog Monarch)
Table 9: Sean Tohidi (Gladiator Beasts) Vs. Dustin Dalton (X-Sabers)
Table 10: Chris Pittao (Lightsworn) Vs. Joshua Graham (Gladiator Beasts)

Table 11: Roy St Clair (X-Sabers) Vs. Cody Gravelle (Lightsworn)
Table 12: Sasha Del Conte (Blackwings) Vs. Dale Bellido (Infernity)
Table 13: Mian Zheng (X-Sabers) Vs. Billy Espineda (Quickdraw Lightsworn)

Interesting to note is that out of the 26 players in tables 1 through 13, seven of the 26 decks are X-Sabers. This shows that even without Rescue Cat, X-sabers are still a very viable force capable of causing a lot of damage in the tournament scene. Other than that, there are 5 Gladiator Beast Decks, 3 Blackwing Decks, 2 Infernity Decks, 2 Machina Gadget Decks, 2 Lightsworn Decks, 1 Quickdraw Deck, 1 Quickdraw Lightsworn Deck, 1 Absolute Zero Deck, 1 Little City Deck, and 1 Frog Monarch Deck. With over 10 different decktypes at the top tables, it’s anyone’s guess as to what will win this YCS!

Deck Profile: Nicky Lacaille’s Miracle Monarchs

September 4th, 2010

With most competitors expecting today’s tournament to be slower, more stable, and less centered around One-Turn KO’s than previous Championship events this Summer, many Duelists are taking an interest in Monarch Decks.

Round 3 Feature Match: Michael Boire VS Beau Sherbok

September 4th, 2010

Beau Sherbok traveled here this weekend from Niagara, while Michael is a native of nearby Brantford, Ontario.  While Sherbok is running Blackwings, his opponent Boire is playing a Dragon Deck using Delta Flyer to smooth out his Synchro Summons and Dandylion to make his Debris Dragons even better while fueling the effects of Scrap Dragon and Trident Dragion.  Boire’s Deck is really good at Summoning big monsters, and it’s especially good at Synchro Summoning – but if he overreaches here, he could lose out to cards like Blackwing – Shura the Blue Flame and Icarus Attack.  This one was anybody’s game.

Deck Profile: Dale Bellido’s Infernity Deck

September 4th, 2010

Infernities proved to be extremely popular here in Toronto this past Summer: so much so that while X-Sabers were dominating in the United States, Infernities were winning the Canadian World Championship Qualifier.  Aaron Noel took home the Canadian Championship, but it was fellow Canadians like Lazaro and Dale Bellido that first pioneered the Deck when it debuted at YCS Virginia.  They, and many more Canadians like them, continued to play the Deck for the bulk of the March 1st Advanced Format.
