Top 32 Feature Match: Christopher Miles VS Michael Jacobs

October 10th, 2010

Both of these competitors are in the Top 32 with Decks that stand apart from the expected field.  While Michael Jacobs is playing the Flamvell Deck fondly nicknamed “Synchro Dog,” his opponent Christopher Miles is the lone Scrap Duelist left in the tournament.  With both Duelists eager to get to Dueling, the Match was off to a swift start.

Round 10 Feature Match: Jonny Nagel VS Gary Diamond

October 10th, 2010

Both of these competitors had 7-2 records heading into this round: a win here would give the victor a great chance at making the Top 32.  Gary Diamond was a LIGHT Gemini Beatdown Duelist, while Jonny Nagel was back from his appearance at YCS San Jose with another take on the Naturia Deck he piloted to a bubble Match in that tournament.  The twist?  This time he was playing an all-new strategy: Naturia Scraps.  Good idea, or bad idea?  We were about to find out!

Round 9 Feature Match: Alexander Martin VS Alistar Constantine

October 10th, 2010

Alistar Constantine and Alexander Martin are both 8-0 in the tournament and sitting at Table 1. With just 2 more rounds of Swiss left, a win here will guarantee one of these Duelists a spot in the Top 32. Constantine’s Blackwing Deck may have an edge over Martin’s Quickdraw Dandywarrior Deck thanks to Blackwing – Bora the Spear, but an early setup on Martin’s field could be trouble for Constantine.

Round 9 Feature Match: Christopher Burrows VS Eric Huang

October 10th, 2010

Christopher Burrows finished yesterday with a 6-2 record: 2 more consecutive Match wins would almost guarantee a seat in the top 32, but that was the goal for all of the Duelists remaining in this tournament, and Eric Huang is no exception.  Huang is playing an aggressive LIGHT Beatdown / Gemini City Deck, similar to the Deck that won YCS San Jose for Angel Flores.  With Scrapstorms and Gemini Sparks in the mix, this could be an interesting tactical Match.

At YCS Toronto, the top 3 most-played Decks were Gladiator Beasts (15.06% of the field), X-Sabers (13.03%), and Blackwings (12.58%).  In San Jose the top 3 Decks stayed the same, but the order changed, with X-Sabers being the most popular (15.42%), Gladiator Beasts hot on its heels (12.46%), and Blackwings clocking in at third place once again (11.53%).  With those statistics in mind, we hit the tournament floor to ask competitors what they think is the most-played Deck in today’s field!

Round 8 Feature Match: Marshaun Young vs. Christopher Evans

October 9th, 2010

Marshaun Young is currently 6-1 with the Fairy Chaos Deck we profiled at the start of the tournament. His opponent, Christopher Evans, has a 6-1 record with Infernities. Young’s 3 copies of Royal Decree may make this a tough matchup for Evans, but if Evans can draw the right cards early on, he may be able to defeat Young before he gets his Deck up-and-running. A victory here will put one of these Duelists into a great position to make the Top 32 after the 2 rounds of swiss tomorrow morning.

Round 8 Feature Match: Joe Nguyen Versus Christopher Campbell

October 9th, 2010

Both of these competitors are on the bubble here in Round 8, with 5-1-1 records (5 wins, 1 loss, and 1 draw each).  Christopher Campbell is competing in his first big tournament this weekend: he’s never even played in a Regional before, but now he could be headed to Day 2 with an aggressive Fish Deck.  Campbell’s strategy is built around Thunder King Rai-Oh and Superancient Deepsea King Coelacanth, while Nguyen is running a defensive Camel Control Deck with Des Lacooda and Mist Valley Falcon.  This is a matchup we’ve never seen before, so it should be interesting!

Deck Profile: Ramin Ghodoumipour’s Koa’ki Meiru Gadget Deck

October 9th, 2010

I first spoke to Ramin Ghodoumipour while interviewing Duelists for Quick Questions. When he told me he’s using Big Piece Golem as his “secret tech” that will bring him ahead of the competition, I didn’t think much of it. But now, Ramin Ghodoumipour is 5-1 with his Koa’ki Meiru Gadget Deck. The secret’s out, and it turns out that Big Piece Golem really works.
