Round 10 Feature Match: Matt Kolenda Versus Timothy Aicard

March 23rd, 2014

Bujins were a surprise frontrunner yesterday at the top tables, and today at Table 1 we’re going to see what may go down as the defining matchup of this tournament: Fire Fists versus Bujins.  Matt Kolenda and Timothy Aicard are the last two undefeated competitors in this tournament – both are virtually guaranteed a seat in the Top 32 at this point, and both represent the peak of success for their respective strategies in this tournament; Kolenda is running Fire Fists, while Aicard is playing Bujins.

Round 9 Feature Match: Doug Zeeff Versus Ian Levy

March 23rd, 2014

Earlier today, we featured Doug Zeeff in the massive blowout that was his Round 2 Feature Match, where his Spirit Deck was railroaded by two huge openings from Infernities!  But despite that brutal defeat, Zeeff clung to life in the tournament and now he’s X-2 here in Round 9, still alive with a shot at Day 2.  But that said, he’d need to win out from this point forward to keep his Top 32 dreams alive.

His opponent is Ian Matthew Levy, from Kansas City.  He drove here for eight hours to compete with a Mixed Axis Fire Fist build, and now he’s X-2 on the bubble for Day 2.  He’s teching Divine Wrath, which may give him a big edge against Zeeff’s effect-driven strategy if he can get an early lead going.  Will Zeeff and his Spirits get a shot at redemption?  Or will Levy be going to Day 2 with Fire Fists?  We were about to find out.

Round 8 Feature Match: Michael Steinman Versus Paul Crum

March 23rd, 2014

One of the stories we talked about earlier in the day was the competition between two different builds of Geargia: the classic Karakuri Geargia and the newer Pure Geargia variant that’s seen Regional Top 8 success over the past two to three weeks.  This Match is really cool, because it pits the faster, more explosive Karakuri Geargia deck in the hands of Paul Crum, against the more consistent, more stable Pure Geargia build piloted by Michael Steinman, built in conjunction with William Pedigo.  This is a big match-up for the weekend, and we were about to see it play out in high-style in a Feature Match for the first time!  Let’s see what happens…

Round 8 Feature Match: Christopher Gonzalez Versus Kasey Krick

March 23rd, 2014

Chrisopher Gonzalez is a local Duelist from Chicago, Illinois, Dueling against Indiana’s Kasey Krick in this Round 8 Feature Match. Both Duelists currently have 6-1 records. Kasey is using an Infernity Deck that packs 2 copies of Instant Fusion, 1 copy of Archfiend Heiress and 1 copy of Archfiend Palabyrinth. He can use Instant Fusion to Special Summon Barox from his Extra Deck. While he has Barox and Infernity Archfiend on his field, he can use the effect of Palabyrinth to banish Barox and Special Summon another Infernity Archfiend from his hand, Deck, or Graveyard. Chrisopher Gonzalez is using a Gadget Deck that packs 3 copies of Chain Summoning. Gonzalez’s ideal play involves Summoning a Gadget and activating its effect as Chain Link 1, activating the effect of Kagetokage in his hand as Chain Link 2, and then activating Chain Summoning as Chain Link 3 to gain 2 additional Normal Summons. Gonzalez can use those additional Summons to Summon Gadgets or Machina Gearframe, overwhelming his opponents with Machines.

Both Gonzalez and Krick have had a lot of success with their Decks this weekend, but only one of them can advance with a 7-1 record. It’s time to Duel!

Round 7 Feature Match: Benedikt Junk Versus Fernando Ariel Toro

March 23rd, 2014

It’s very possible that no competitor traveled further here this weekend, than Benedikt Junk!  Despite living in Dusseldorf Germany, Junk is a regular here at North American YCS events, and this weekend he’s piloting a strategy that most competitors won’t be Side Decking for – Dark Worlds, with The Dark Creator.

But his opponent’s also playing a relatively rogue strategy – Infernities!  Fernando Ariel Toro is from right here in Chicago, and he’s looking to keep the YCS title here in the Windy City this weekend.  Both competitors are playing Dark Decks, and both are undefeated thus far.  An explosive pace would favor Toro’s strategy, but if Junk can draw him into a long grind game he’d easily win with his repeated destruction effects and draw tricks.  Let’s see who’d come out on top!

Round 6 Feature Match: Stephen Ross Versus Jordan Winters

March 23rd, 2014

Walking the top tables during Round 5, the most common deck wasn’t Fire Fists or Mermails.  By far, the most popular deck at the Top 25 tables appeared to be Bujins, followed by Fire Fists and Geargia.  Table 1 was Spellbooks versus Bujins; Table 2 was Inzektors versus Bujins; and below them were Madolches, Mermails, Dark Worlds, and a spread of familiar strategies.

But Stephen Ross’ strategy was a standout even amongst all that variety.  Ross is playing an Elemental HERO deck in a post-Stratos world, and he’s currently X-1 past the halfway point in today’s competition.  We’re curious about his strategy, so what better time than now to give him a Feature Match?  Ross’s opponent for this round is Jordan Winters, a hugely successful Duelist the past year, and he’s piloting the popular Fire Fist build with Upstart Goblins and a laser-like focus on Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Bear and Coach Soldier Wolfbark.
