Welcome to Day 2, we’ve just finished the 10th round on our way to the Top Cut. Here are your Standings as of Round 10.
Bujins have had a strong presence at the top tables this weekend, but seem to have been underrepresented in Feature Matches. We’re going to try to rectify that this round, as we Feature Match one of the many Bujin Decks still in contention for a Top 32 finish. Thomas Mak currently hold a 7-2 record with his Bujin Deck, which utilizes the combined synergies of the Bujin, Bujingi, and Bujintei monsters. His opponent this round, Jeremy Lozano, has a 7-2 record with Mermails. A victory in this round will bring one of these Duelists closer to a Top 32 finish, while a loss is likely to make it impossible for one of these Duelists to advance to the elimination rounds. It’s time to Duel!
Bujins were a surprise frontrunner yesterday at the top tables, and today at Table 1 we’re going to see what may go down as the defining matchup of this tournament: Fire Fists versus Bujins. Matt Kolenda and Timothy Aicard are the last two undefeated competitors in this tournament – both are virtually guaranteed a seat in the Top 32 at this point, and both represent the peak of success for their respective strategies in this tournament; Kolenda is running Fire Fists, while Aicard is playing Bujins.
We have reached the end of Day 1, nine rounds have passed, here are the Final Standings as of Round 9 at YCS Chicago.
Earlier today, we featured Doug Zeeff in the massive blowout that was his Round 2 Feature Match, where his Spirit Deck was railroaded by two huge openings from Infernities! But despite that brutal defeat, Zeeff clung to life in the tournament and now he’s X-2 here in Round 9, still alive with a shot at Day 2. But that said, he’d need to win out from this point forward to keep his Top 32 dreams alive.
His opponent is Ian Matthew Levy, from Kansas City. He drove here for eight hours to compete with a Mixed Axis Fire Fist build, and now he’s X-2 on the bubble for Day 2. He’s teching Divine Wrath, which may give him a big edge against Zeeff’s effect-driven strategy if he can get an early lead going. Will Zeeff and his Spirits get a shot at redemption? Or will Levy be going to Day 2 with Fire Fists? We were about to find out.
QQ stands for Quick Questions! Each Duelist carefully constructed his or her Deck to defeat his or her opponents this weekend. But when all but 16 Duelists are eliminated, those remaining will put aside their Decks and compete using Decks drafted from Battle Pack 2: War of the Giants – Round 2. I surveyed the Duelists in attendance this weekend to see what preparation, if any, they did for the possibility of making it to the Top 16 and drafting Battle Pack 2: War of the Giants – Round 2. Check out their responses!
Moving into the last round of the day, here are the Standings as of Round 8.
