The Finals: Chris LeBlanc Versus Nicholas Blandin

This was it!  Chris LeBlanc was gunning for his second YCS win, while Nicholas Blandin was now in the Finals off his first-ever YCS Top 32.  Both of these competitors know eachother well, since they compete at the same local tournament on a week to week basis.  The stakes were as high as they can be, but both competitors seemed pretty jazzed just to be competing amongst friends.

Top 4 Feature Match: Chris LeBlanc Versus Bernardo Miranda

Chris LeBlanc is the youngest YCS winner of all time, and now he was poised within striking distance of his second Championship!  Two more wins was all he’d need to join a distinguished few, but standing in his way was repeated YCS Top Cut duelist Bernardo Miranda!  Two more Matches would decide who was going home a Champion, but right here and right now, this Match would award the winner a copy of Number 106: Giant Hand!

Top 8 Feature Match: Christopher Woolheater Versus Corey Roca

New York’s Christopher Woolheater finished the Swiss Rounds with a 9-2 record using Mermails. Now he’s paired up against Delaware’s Corey Roca in this Top 8 Feature Match! Roca ended the Swiss Rounds with a 9-2 record using his Evilswarm Deck. Although Evilswarm Decks generally have a strong matchup against Mermail Decks, that won’t be relevant in this Top 8 Match – both Duelists built Decks out of the cards drafted from Battle Pack 2: War of the Giants to use in this Match. Which Duelist has the better Deck and the superior skill? We’re about to find out! It’s time to Duel!

Top 8 Feature Match: Jonathan Aguero Versus Nicholas Blandin

Jonathan Aguero is now just three wins away from matching his brother, Hansel Aguero’s Championship win.  Coming off a 2-0 blowout in his Top 16 Feature Match, could he keep that momentum?  His opponent this Round was Nicholas Blandin, and spoiler: this Feature Match involves a whole ‘lotta Horn of the Unicorn!

Top 32 Feature Match:

Maryland’s Naveen Shankar took first place in a Dragon Duel Championship back in 2009 when he was only 12 years old. He won a trip to Japan and an experience that he’d remember for a lifetime. Now, he’s back as a 17-year-old Duelist, competing in the Top 32 of YCS Philadelphia! Shankar finished the Swiss Rounds with a 10-1 record this weekend using his Geargia Deck. His opponent this round, New York’s Christopher Woolheater, ended the Swiss Rounds with a 9-2 record using his Mermail Deck. This Top 32 Feature Match will determine which one of these Duelists will advance to the Battle Pack 2: War of the Giants Draft portion of the tournament. It’s time to Duel!

Top 32 Feature Match: Luis Poma Versus Mark Conley

Here in the Top 32, Bujins were still in competition, placing three competitors into the Top Cut.  Luis Poma is piloting Bujins this round, up against Mark Conley with the breakout strategy of the tournament – Traptrix Hand Artifacts.  Would Bujin Hirume and Bujinki Amaterasu be enough of an edge to get Poma the win, or would Conley’s entire Deck of new hotness beat out the long-successful fan favorite?

Round 11 Feature Match: Thomas Rowe Versus Marc Carisse

Marc Carisse has been a standout Geargia Duelist since March, when he made Top 8 at the Oshawa Ontario Regional, then repeated with Geargia again two weeks later at the Chicago Regional.  Carisse was a proponent of Pure Geargia when Karakuri Geargia was still the preferred build, and rode the cutting edge of that trend as Pure Geargia took over – just as in recent Regional competitions, Karakuri Geargia have disappeared entirely here at the YCS.

Round 11 Feature Match: Isaac Whatley Versus Brian Clark

Isaac Whatley from Schenectady, New York is Dueling against Brian Clark from Montgomery Village, Maryland in this Round 11 Feature Match! Whatley and Clark are both using Decks powered up by the recent release of Primal Origin, but are piloting vastly different strategies. Whatley is using a Madolche Deck that Special Summons monsters and adds monsters to the hand with Madolche Chateau and Madolche Ticket; Clark is using a Traptrix Hands Artifact Deck that slowly gains advantage in each Duel by gradually destroying his opponent’s cards. Both of these Duelists have 8-2 records, so each of them will need a victory in this round if they want to maintain hope for a Top 32 finish. It’s time to Duel!

Saturday’s Dragon Duel Feature Match: Steve Zepeda Versus Jared Schaefer

12-year-old Steve Zepeda from Philadelphia and 12-year-old Jared Schaefer from Long Island are Dueling against one another in the finals of today’s Dragon Duel tournament! Zepeda is using a Bujin Deck, recently strengthened by the release of Primal Origin. His opponent, Jared Schaefer, is using a Constellar Deck. Which one of these Duelists will become Saturday’s Dragon Duel Champion? It’s time to Duel!

Round 10 Feature Match: Tahmid Zaman Versus James Huang

May 18th, 2014

Here in Day 2, Tahmid Zaman and James Huang were both 8-1 heading into this round, each just two wins away from a guaranteed spot in the Top 32.  Each Duelist is playing a major Deck that’s put in a big showing here this weekend – Zaman’s playing Geargias, while Huang is running Traptrix Hands.  Both this Deck and Traptrix Hand Artifacts have had a big presence, so this Feature Match will be representative of a major match-up in this tournament, and potentially countless tournaments in the coming weeks.
