Maryland’s Naveen Shankar took first place in a Dragon Duel Championship back in 2009 when he was only 12 years old. He won a trip to Japan and an experience that he’d remember for a lifetime. Now, he’s back as a 17-year-old Duelist, competing in the Top 32 of YCS Philadelphia! Shankar finished the Swiss Rounds with a 10-1 record this weekend using his Geargia Deck. His opponent this round, New York’s Christopher Woolheater, ended the Swiss Rounds with a 9-2 record using his Mermail Deck. This Top 32 Feature Match will determine which one of these Duelists will advance to the Battle Pack 2: War of the Giants Draft portion of the tournament. It’s time to Duel!
Here in the Top 32, Bujins were still in competition, placing three competitors into the Top Cut. Luis Poma is piloting Bujins this round, up against Mark Conley with the breakout strategy of the tournament – Traptrix Hand Artifacts. Would Bujin Hirume and Bujinki Amaterasu be enough of an edge to get Poma the win, or would Conley’s entire Deck of new hotness beat out the long-successful fan favorite?
With Primal Origin rocking the competitive landscape to its core this weekend, we asked competitors in the main event which three Decks they believed to be the top three in contention! While Mermails, Bujins, and Geargia reigned supreme in Regional Top 8s over the past few weeks, did Primal Origin change the competitive expectations? We wanted to find out.
We are down to the Top 32 Duelist from 1410, do you see the Duelist you were rooting for?!?
With the Top 16 Playoff Rounds now contested in draft play, the best constructed Decks of the weekend are those that win in the Top 32, carrying their pilots to the draft portion of the tournament. With that in mind, the most successful Constructed Deck of the weekend is generally viewed as the one that wins the most seats in the Top 16. We asked around, to find out which Deck players believed to be the handsdown best.
Here are the All Player Standings after 11 Rounds of Swiss play here at YCS Philadelphia! Next we cut to the top 32 Duelist!
Marc Carisse has been a standout Geargia Duelist since March, when he made Top 8 at the Oshawa Ontario Regional, then repeated with Geargia again two weeks later at the Chicago Regional. Carisse was a proponent of Pure Geargia when Karakuri Geargia was still the preferred build, and rode the cutting edge of that trend as Pure Geargia took over – just as in recent Regional competitions, Karakuri Geargia have disappeared entirely here at the YCS.
The field this weekend is hugely varied, and that makes Side Decking a tremendous challenge; if you don’t know what your number one priority is, it’s really tough to choose the fifteen cards that are most effective. With that in mind we wanted to find out what players felt were the most important in their Side Deck. Here are the answers!
