Top 16 Feature Match: Desmond Johnson Versus Sean McCabe

September 7th, 2014

Two of the most decorated Duelists of the weekend were set to go head-to-head, right here in the first round of Draft play!  Desmond Johnson was integral to the rise of the Karakuri deck last year, so much so that he’s widely nicknamed the Karakuri King!  But his opponent is Sean McCabe, a competitive chameleon that’s been topping YCS tournaments since 2009 and who just represented the United States at the 2014 World Championship!  Two great competitors, and only one of them can make it past this Round – let’s see who’ll make the cut and who’s making the long trip home!

Round 10 Feature Match: Yuhang Li Versus Kenneth McCarthy

September 7th, 2014

Yesterday in our Round 8 Feature Match, we saw David Green’s Madolches oust Yuhang Li’s Fire Kings to knock Li down to an X-2 record.  Now he’s back this morning, hanging in for one last round at 7-2, just one win away from the Top 32.

His opponent this Round is Kenneth McCarthy, a Burning Abyss Duelist from Patterson New Jersey!  Both of these competitors are running Supply Squad, so watch for that to be a key card in this match-up: a slow start could cost either competitor if their opponent hits a big start and starts racking up free cards.

Round 9 Feature Match: Bo Tang Versus Marc Carisse

September 7th, 2014

Bo Tang is one of Toronto’s biggest stars, after having topped the North American WCQ in 2011 and representing Canada in the World Championships that year!  Well respected for his incredible consistency making top cuts in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series, as well as his perpetually upbeat attitude, Tang’s playing Shaddolls with Black Dragon Collapserpent, White Dragon Wyverburster, and triple Trap Stun this weekend.

His opponent this Round is another lauded Torontonian competitor, Marc Carisse, who was integral to the development of the Pure Geargia strategy in Regional Qualifiers earlier this year!  Carisse is running Shaddolls as well, but he’s playing Super Polymerizations with triple Thunder Dragon instead of the mini Chaos Dragons.  The Dragon’s been a big pick this weekend, but we haven’t seen it in a Feature Match until now.  Since one in-hand Thunder Dragon becomes two via its effect, it’s a great Light to pitch for Shaddoll Fusion, and makes excellent discard fodder for Super Polymerization.

Round 8 Feature Match: Yuhang Li Versus David Green

September 7th, 2014

Once again, we see a Feature Match that pits a Toronto Duelist against a competitor from Montreal!  These two hotbeds of Canadian Dueling talent have been at a clash all day long, and now we’d see Montrealer David Green go up against Toronto’s Yuhang Li.  Both competitors have 6-1 records here in the last Round of Day 1, and they’re two of the few rogue Duelists left in the tournament: Green is playing Madolches and took his one loss in Round 1, while Li is running Fire Kings and was undefeated up until last Round.

Green won the roll and opted to go second.

Thomas Morran is a staple competitor of the Toronto Dueling scene, while his opponent this round is Montreal’s Ruo Chen Mo!  Montreal competitors have bene tearing up this tournament all day long, and Mo’s undefeated record with Shaddolls was no exception.  But Morran was running Burning Abyss, currently the second most-successful Deck in the tournament.  Would Mo steal another win for the Montreal contingent, or would Morran remain undefeated to represent Toronto in Day 2?   Read more…

Round 5 Feature Match: Hunter Raymond Knight Versus Manpreet Rattan

September 6th, 2014

Manpreet Rattan hails from Montreal, and like so many competitors this weekend he’s undefeated in Round 5 with Shaddols.  While the Artifact variant of Shaddolls hasn’t appeared to be very popular thus far in Day 1, Rattan’s playing Artifact Sanctum and Artifact Moralltach.

His opponent is Toronto’s Hunter Raymond Knight, currently 4-0 with Frog Monarchs!  The release of The Monarchs Stormforth has created a surge of interest in Monarch strategies, and Knight’s banking on tech choices like Jinzo and Majesty’s Fiend to give him an edge in this tournament.  So far the plan’s been working! With just four Rounds left, let’s see if Knight can keep his streak alive.  Knight won the roll and opted to let his opponent go first.
