Top 32 Feature Match: Frazier Smith versus Charles Kip

May 29th, 2016

Welcome to the Top 32! There are lots of unique Decks and cool tech choices that have made it into the Top 32, but Frazier Smith’s tech choice is one of the least expected given his choice of Deck. Duelists were anticipating the addition of Card of Demise to slow Decks that count on amassing cards, like Qliphort Decks, Gravekeeper’s Decks, and Counter Fairy Decks; but few Duelists anticipated that Card of Demise would be used in Decks that are already mainstream. Frazier Smith has rattled the notion that Card of Demise doesn’t fit into the modern game’s top Decks, by finishing the Swiss Rounds with a 9-1 record using his Kozmo Deck featuring three copies of Card of Demise. Smith uses Card of Demise to draw into his crucial Trap Cards; and when he picks up Kozmo monsters with Card of Demise instead, he’s able to use Kozmotown to shuffle them back into his Deck and drew new cards, getting a second shot at drawing those critical Traps to Set before discarding his hand. Card of Demise has served Smith well this weekend, and Duelists may see Smith’s use of Card of Demise set a trend whereby Duelists are willing to experiment with Card of Demise in all sorts of different Decks.

Now, Smith is Dueling against 17-year-old Performapal Pendulum Duelist Charles Kip in a Top 32 Feature Match that will determine which Duelist advances to the Top 16. It’s time to Duel!

Round 10 Feature Match: Thomas Mak versus Amr Hassan

May 29th, 2016

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania’s Thomas Mak is Dueling against Queens, New York’s Amr Hassan in our Round 10 Feature Match! Mak and Hassan both currently have 6-2-1 records, which means a loss in this Swiss Round will guarantee elimination in this tournament, while a win will still require lucky tiebreakers in order to make it into the Top 32. Nevertheless, the dream of a Top 32 finish is still alive for Thomas Mak and Amr Hassan, and they’ll be Dueling their hardest in this final Swiss Round in order to maximize any possible chance of making it into the Top 32.

Mak is using an Xyz Monarch Deck that features Brilliant Fusion. Mak can use Brilliant Fusion to send Gem-Knight Lazuli and Metaphys Armed Dragon from his Deck to his Graveyard. Not only does this allow him to Summon Gem-Knight Seraphinite and gain an additional Normal Summon, but it also lets him use Lazuli’s effect to return Metaphys Armed Dragon from his Graveyard to his hand. Metaphys Armed Dragon has 2800 ATK and 1000 DEF, allowing him to use it with Tenacity of the Monarchs and Domain of the True Monarchs. Amr Hassan is using a Mermail Atlantean Deck that is capable of wiping out 8000 Life Points in a single turn. It’s time to Duel!
