Finals Feature Match: Michael Walters vs. Bohdan Temnyk

August 28th, 2016

It all comes down to this.  Michael Walters has been playing the Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME since the beginning, but this is the first big tournament showing of his Dueling career.  A local Duelist from Brampton Ontario – a suburb just outside of Toronto proper – Walters is running a teched out version of the Burning Abyss Phantom Knight Deck.  Cards like Phantom Knights’ Wing and Chaos Hunter have given him an edge all weekend, but would those risks of using those cards continue to pay off?

We’re about to find out, as Walters is up against Sydney, Australia’s Bohdan Temnyk!  We Feature Matched Temnyk in Round 1 yesterday, with Temnyk coming off his appearance at the 2016 World Championship last week.  Temnyk was the runner-up in the Oceanic WCQ this year, and has a long string of also-ran finishes in big events like Nationals and WCQ’s.  With a wealth of Top 16, Top 8, and Top 4 finishes in the past, Temnyk is looking to finally nab that big win on the YCS stage.  Would this be his weekend?

We’re about to find out.

August 28th, 2016

Round 10 Feature Match: Yuhang Li vs. David Creti

August 28th, 2016

Yuhang Li is a Toronto all-star, with three Top 8 showings in Regional Qualifiers the past year and three YCS tops over the course of his Dueling career.  His opponent is David Creti, who has also had a strong year: the Montreal Duelist topped his last two Regional Qualifiers alone, and is 8-1 so far with Blue-Eyes White Dragon; the highest-ranked Blue-Eyes player in the tournament, paired up against the 9-0 Li.  This match will pit the upstart Blue-Eyes Deck against the eminently established Domain Monarchs.

Both of these competitors were shoe-ins for the Top 32, but Li wanted to go 10-0, while Creti wanted to secure a strong record with Blue-Eyes White Dragon.  We haven’t seen much of the Deck in Feature Matches this weekend, so this is a big chance to see how it operates against one of the best Decks of the format, piloted by the only undefeated competitor in the tournament.

Round 7 Feature Match: Kevin Paul vs. Sam Arunnaveesiri

August 28th, 2016

With two Rounds remaining in Day 1, the tournament floor is abuzz with discussion about one Deck: Kevin Paul’s Burning Abyss Fluffals.  Paul is riding the razor’s edge on a 4-1-1 record sitting at Table 25, effectively on the bubble, but the Oakville local’s Deck is so nuts we just have to get a look at it.

His opponent is Scarborough’s Sam Arunnaveesiri, piloting Domain Monarchs with a 4-1-1 record as well.  While most players sort of vaguely know about Paul’s Deck by this point, Arunnaveesiri is going to have to take some time and quickly learn what Paul’s cards do if he wants to win this one.  It’s doable, but it won’t be easy.
