Round 5 Feature Match: Billy Brake vs. Justin Morales

August 27th, 2016

Billy Brake is a three-time Champion with three YCS wins under his belt, and it was five years ago almost to the day, when he captured his first title right here in Toronto.  That was 2011, and the Deck was Plant Synchro – Brake realized that Maxx “C” was a good card before anyone else and won that YCS because of it.  Now he’s back in contention with Domain Monarchs, the most recognized and conventional Deck in competition. Billy Brake is representing CoreTCG – an Official Tournament Store located in Pasadena, California. CoreTCG is one of many Konami Official Tournament Stores at which fans of the Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME can Duel. You can find a Konami Official Tournament Store near you by using the locator available here!

Brake’s opponent, Justin Morales, is taking an approach to the tournament that is the exact opposite of the approach Brake is taking. Unlike Brake, who is using a tried-and-true Domain Monarch Deck, Morales is running a unique Majespecter Metalfoes Deck made possible by The Dark Illusion.  Morales is from Brampton, just outside the Toronto city limits, and a win over Brake would be huge.  Could he manage it?  We’re about to find out.

Round 3 Feature Match: Matthew Bishop vs. Daniel John Strzeszewski

August 27th, 2016

Matthew Bishop is a staple of the Toronto Dueling scene, undefeated here this weekend with Burning Abyss Phantom Knights. The kicker? He’s running Performapal Hip Hippo with triple Super Hippo Carnival from The Dark Illusion, something we saw in recent weeks from Joseph Bogli, who ran the same tech for different reasons in Monarchs. Bishop is also playing Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit in his Main Deck, along with Emergency Teleport, which can be used to Summon it.

Bishop’s opponent is Daniel John Strzeszewski, who traveled here this weekend from Detroit Michigan to compete with Metalfoes. We’ve yet to see Metalfoes in action, so this could be really interesting. That said, those Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbits could become a problem for him.

Round 2 Feature Match: Alexander Vansant vs. Sanjeev Rajendran

August 27th, 2016

Anjeev Rajendran is from the Greater Toronto Area, hailing from Markham.  He’s here this weekend piloting Tzolkin Monarchs, bolstered by the new Level 5 Tuner, Blackwing – Gofu the Vague Shadow, from The Dark Illusion.  It’s sort of like Quickdraw Synchron in Monarchs since it makes those Ultimaya Tzolkin plays happen, but its Vague Shadow Tokens also fuel combos with Kuraz the Light Monarch and provide defense.

His opponent is long-time star Duelist Alexander Vansant, representing Voltage Games in Southfield Michigan, which he co-owns with repeat Champion Jeff Jones. Voltage Games is one of many Konami Official Tournament Stores at which fans of the Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME can Duel. You can find a Konami Official Tournament Store near you by using the locator available here!

Vansant is running Domain Monarchs, but with a big new twist: The Despair Uranus, fresh off its release in Dragons of Legend: Unleashed.  Its effect lets Vansant search for March of the Monarchs or Vanity’s Emptiness, then protects it from being destroyed, creating a sort of soft lock.  The kicker is that while it’s an auto-win in most match-ups, it’s weak against other Monarch Decks, and now Vansant is in his nightmare scenario.

Round 1 Feature Match: Bohdan Temnyk vs. Robert Dreni

August 27th, 2016

Bohdan Temnyk competed last weekend in the World Champion to represent his native Australia, but why stop there?!  After competing here at YCS Toronto last year, he’s back fresh off his Worlds appearance and looking for more title gold.  His Deck of choice?  The same Burning Abyss Phantom Knight strategy that won him the Oceanic World Championship Qualifier this year.

His opponent is Toronto local Robert Dreni, competing this weekend with a strategy that may catch Temnyk off guard: Mermails.  We saw Mermails make the Top Cut at the South American WCQ earlier this summer, and Dreni is playing some new tech from recent releases.  The Great White North faces off against the Land Down Under, right here in our first Feature Match of the weekend.
