Much of the Top 64 was Sky Strikers, proving that the strategy is one to be reckoned with. He’s up against Andres Torres’s Sekka’s Light Burning Abyss Deck now! We just saw Torres take a commanding victory in his Top 4 Feature Match, but can he do it again? Sky Strikers won the other 200th YCS events in Utrecht and in Columbus. We saw Panamanian Duelist Rolando Gordon win his Feature Match yesterday, showing that Gouki are still a force to be reckoned with. He’s now facing Andres Torres in this Top 4 Feature Match! Torres is originally from Miami, but holds dual citizenship in Colombia. That’s where he learned to Duel, so he identifies as a Colombian Duelist. He’s using a Sekka’s Light Burning Abyss Deck, the only one to make it in the Top 64. Only one Duelist can move on to the finals!

We have two talented Duelists for this Feature Match, each with great placings in some major events. Rodolfo Ramirez, from Tijuana, made the top cut of YCS San Diego as well as the 2017 WCQ. He’s using Sky Strikers today. His opponent is Renato Sarmiento, from Lima, Peru. Sarmiento made it to the top cut of the South American WCQ, and he’s the only Paleozoic Duelist to make it into the Top 64 here at YCS Mexico City.

Over 2,600 Duelists have been reduced to only the Top 64! From here it will be single elimination – no mistakes allowed! Renee Gonzalez made history at her home at YCS Guadalajara, with her Top 8 placing making her the highest placing woman in YCS history. She’s back again with a Sky Striker Trickstar Deck, looking for the win this time. She’s facing Jorge Matu, from Cancun, using a Sky Striker Deck. We’ve seen a lot of Sky Striker Decks this weekend, and a big part of the strategy in this format is learning how to effectively play that mirror match.

We’re approaching the end of Day 1 here at YCS Mexico City! Rolando Gordon, from Panama, is one of the few Duelists still piloting Gouki. The Gouki strategy was hampered when Knightmare Goblin became Forbidden, restricting their typical combos. In addition, Summon Sorceress is not legal for play in Central America, making things even tougher for the Gouki Duelists! Gordon’s opponent is Cesar Nino, from here in Mexico City. Nino is one of several Duelists using True Draco, but now with an Extra Deck! Most True Draco Duelists eschewed the Extra Deck so they could play The Monarchs Erupt. Now, Duelists are discovering just how good Metaltron XII, the True Dracombatant really is.

Guadalajara Duelist Adrian Madriz is one of the very few Duelists with the title of three-time YCS Champion! He’s on a roll this year, with two of his YCS wins in 2018. His other win was right here in Mexico City in 2016. His opponent has some skills of his own – local Duelist Geovanni Gaytan made it to the top cut of last year’s WCQ. This Match pits Madriz’s Sky Strikers against Gaytan’s True Dracos.

He’s using a True Draco Deck today, packed with a ton of ways to make things difficult for his opponents. He’s up against a bounty Duelist, Chile’s YCS Champion Hector Perez! Perez is using pure Sky Strikers today. We’ll see how he adapts to Sky Striker Mecha – Hornet Drones now being Limited.

Welcome to Round 3 of YCS Mexico City! Both of our Duelists this round are from right here in Mexico City. We have Grecia Vargas, using the new popular form of Burning Abyss – all monsters, except three copies of Sekka’s Light! Of special note is that Vargas is married to one of the best Central American Duelists around, two-time Ultimate Duelist Champion Alejandro Garcia. What an awesome Dueling team! Her opponent in this Match is Roberto Morales, using Lightsworn. Most Lightsworn Duelists use Zombies, but Morales is sticking to a purer build than most.

We’re about halfway through Day 1 of the 200th YCS, and we’re seeing a bunch of interesting strategies still in contention. One of these is Sekka’s Light Burning Abyss that also uses the new Danger! monsters. The Danger! monsters all have effects that Special Summon themselves, draw cards and discard cards, all of which are a good fit with the Burning Abyss theme. John Joseph Downey from Plattsburgh, New York has Sekka’s Light Burning Abyss while his opponent, Roderick Lawton Dye from Atlanta, Georgia is using Mekk-Knight Invoked. This Deck got a boost from Shadows In Valhalla with the Link 2 monster Aleister the Invoker of Madness. It’s time to Duel!
