Top 64 Deck Breakdown

July 10th, 2016

Heading into the weekend there were four big defined strategies that were expected to be heavily represented in the field. Burning Abyss had won the last two North American YCS, so it had a huge target on its head. Monarchs in various forms have been popular since their release, with Extra Deck Monarch pulling ahead by a substantial margin recently over its Domain counterpart. Two different variants of Pendulum had shined a bit more than the rest, one utilizing powerful Performapal combos while the other used the consistent Odd-Eyes Magician engine to Pendulum Summon huge threats like Majespecter Unicorn – Kirin and Mist Valley Apex Avian. Finally, Card of Demise has given life to a ton of different trap strategies as Duelists tried to find the best shell for it. What ended up being the most successful?

SA WCQ: Top 64 Feature Match: Alejandro Vega Ascarrunz Versus Marck Antonio Caceres Gajardo

June 19th, 2016

While Burning Abyss Phantom Knights have captured a massive 24 seats in the Top 64, the Day 2 field is wildly varied from there.  For instance, Marck Antonio Caceres Gajardo from Santiago, Chile is playing Mermails, the only Duelist in the Top 64 running the Deck.  His opponent is Alejandro Vega Ascarrunz from Cochapamba, Bolivia, playing Extra Deck Monarchs.  Caceres was effectively taking a lone wolf off-the-radar rogue Deck against the most decorated strategy in the format.  Let’s see what happens.

June 12th, 2016

Angel Zayren Flores Covarrubias is one of the most decorated Duelists in the tournament today, with not one, not two, but a whopping three YCS wins in his illustrious Dueling career!  He’s 8-2 this weekend with Demise Kozmos, the emerging third variant of the Kozmo theme that first rose to prominence just two weeks ago, at YCS Providence.  His opponent is Mario Andres Enriquez, piloting Extra Deck Monarchs.  This one is anybody’s game, but Majesty’s Fiend could become a big factor if Garcia can get it into play.

June 28th, 2015

The Swiss Rounds have ended and we are now in the Single Elimination Rounds of Top 64. Logan Glover made it through with a 10-2 record, besting Duelists with his Qliphort Deck using powerful Traps such as Lose 1 Turn to stifle the opponent. Grayson Montanaro is the only HERO Duelist in the Top Cut! He squeaked in at 9-3 and is looking to do his best to try to continue to advance. Six players out of the 64 will be representing Team North America for the 2016 World Championship in Kyoto, Japan, so from here on out things are going to be pretty intense.

Montanaro won the roll and chose to first.
