Genesys Format Round 5 Feature Match: Daniel Nguyen vs. Edward Workman
Daniel Nguyen from Hamilton, Ontario and local Duelist Edward Workman from Columbus, Ohio are both currently undefeated in the Genesys Format Main Event this weekend! Nguyen is using a unique Deck that combines Lyrilusc and Mimighoul strategies, while Workman is using a Monarch Deck. Monarch Decks have been a popular choice for many Duelists in the Genesys Format recently. Will Daniel Nguyen’s innovation allow him to defeat the Monarchs? Only one of these Duelists can advance with a 5-0 record. It’s time to Duel!
Duel One
Workman started off the first Duel by activating Pantheism of the Monarchs.

He discarded The Monarchs Revolt from his hand to draw 2 cards and then activated The Monarchs Revolt by discarding Eidos the Underworld Monarch from his hand. He revealed two copies of Erebus the Underworld Monarch and one Thestalos the Mega Monarch from his Deck, and then Nguyen chose to add an Erebus to Workman’s hand and send the other Monarchs to the Graveyard. Next, Workman banished Pantheism from his Graveyard to activate its effect, revealing 3 copies of Tenacity of the Monarchs from his Deck. He added 1 of them to his hand, and then activated it by revealing Erebus. He added Domain of the True Monarchs from his Deck to his hand and then revealed it to Special Summon Tessera the Primal Squire from his hand. He activated Domain and then used its effect to reduce the Level of the Erebus in his hand. He Tributed Tessera to Summon Erebus and then activated the effects of Tessera, Erebus, and Eidos as Chain Links 1, 2, and 3 respectively. He Special Summoned Eidos from his Graveyard, sent The Prime Monarch and The Monarchs Masterplan to the Graveyard to randomly shuffle a card from Nguyen’s hand into his Deck, and then Special Summoned Edea the Heavenly Squire from his Deck. He activated the effects of Edea and Eidos next. He added another Erebus from his Deck to his hand and Special Summoned Eidos the Underworld Squire from his Deck. He used Eidos’s effect to gain an extra Normal Summon and then Tributed Edea and Eidos the Underworld Monarch to Summon another Erebus. He used Edea’s effect to add his banished Pantheism back to his hand and used Erebus’s effect to return another card from Nguyen’s hand to his Deck by sending Pantheism and The Monarchs Stormforth from his Deck to his Graveyard. Next, he activated the effect of the Erebus in his Graveyard by discarding The Monarchs Masterplan, and added Thestalos to his hand. He then Special Summoned The Prime Monarch by banishing Tenacity from his Graveyard. He Tributed The Prime Monarch and Eidos the Underworld Squire to Summon Thestalos and then activated its effect. He looked at Nguyen’s hand of Mimighoul Dragon, Mimighoul Archfiend, and Treasure Panther, and discarded the Dragon. Nguyen lost 200 Life Points due to Thestalos’s effect as well.
Nguyen drew Bot Herder and then activated Mimighoul Archfiend’s effect in his hand to Set the Archfiend to Workman’s field. He then activated Bot Herder, inflicting 200 points of damage to Workman’s Life Points and taking control of all 3 Monarchs on Workman’s field! On resolution, Workman activated The Prime Monarch’s effect in the Graveyard to Special Summon it by banishing The Monarchs Masterplan. He then used the effect of The Monarchs Masterplan by targeting Erebus and he added Caius the Shadow Monarch to his hand. He Normal Summoned it by Tributing the face-down Mimighoul Archfiend and banished the Erebus on Nguyen’s field from the Duel while inflicting 1000 points of damage to Nguyen’s Life Points. He also used the effect of the Eidos in his Graveyard to Special Summon it, and then used Eidos’s on-field effect to add Ehther the Heavenly Monarch from his Deck to his hand. Nguyen attempted to enter the Battle Phase, but Workman kept him in the Main Phase and activated Ehther’s effect. He Tributed Eidos and Caius to Summon it, sent Stormforth and Masterplan from his Deck to his Graveyard, and then Special Summoned another Ehther from his Deck in Attack Position. Nguyen attacked the Tribute Summoned Ehther with Erebus, destroying both monsters, and then used Thestalos to attack and destroy Caius. In the End Phase, the on-field Ehther returned to Workman’s hand.
Workman used his Domain’s effect to lower the effect of the Ehther in his hand and then activated Spell Card “Soul Exchange”. He Tributed the Thestalos on Nguyen’s field to Summon Ehther, and used the effects of his on-field Ehther and the Eidos in his Graveyard. He Special Summoned an Ehther from his Deck and the Eidos the Underworld Monarch from his Graveyard, and then direct attacks from both copies of Ehther and the Eidos wiped out Nguyen’s remaining 6800 Life Points!

Workman strips 3 cards from Nguyen’s hand on the first turn with his Monarch Deck to win the first Duel of the Match even after losing his 3 Monarchs to Bot Herder!

Nguyen opened up Duel 2 with Life Hack, Shared Ride, Mimighoul Dungeon, Treasure Panther, and Mimighoul Flower.

He activated the effect of Mimighoul Flower in his hand to Special Summon it face-down to Workman’s field and then activated the effect of Treasure Panther to Special Summon it. He activated its effect to flip the Flower face-up and then Flower’s effect resolved. Nguyen added Mimighoul Maker from his Deck to his hand and took control of the Flower. Next, he activated Mimighoul Dungeon and used its effect to add Mimighoul Archfiend from his Deck to his hand. He used the Archfiend’s effect to flip the Archfiend on Workman’s field face-up. Its effect activated. Workman discarded Tessera from his hand, Nguyen drew Triple Tactics Thrust, and Nguyen took control of the Archfiend. Next, Workman used his discarded Tessera’s effect to Special Summon Edea from his Deck, then used Edea’s effect to Special Summon Tessera from his Deck. Nguyen activated the effect of the Slime in his hand to Special Summon it face-down to Workman’s field. He combined Archfiend with Panther to Xyz Summon Giant Mimighoul in Defense Position next, and used its effect to add Mimighoul Room from his Deck to his hand. Then he activated Triple Tactics Thrust to add Where Arf Thou? from his Deck to his hand. He activated it to add Droll & Lock Bird from his Deck to his hand and then combined Flower with Archfiend to Xyz Summon Mimighoul Throne. He detached Archfiend to activate Throne’s effect and Special Summon Mimighoul Master from his Deck. He then used the Mimighoul Master’s effect to add Mimighoul Cerberus to his hand. He activated its effect to Special Summon it face-down to Workman’s field. Next, he used his Giant Mimighoul’s effect to destroy Edea and Tessera and inflict 2000 points of damage to Workman’s Life Points. Finally, he combined Giant Mimighoul with Mimighoul Throne to Xyz Summon Number F0: Utopic Future Zexal. Nguyen Set 2 cards to his back row and then took 2000 points of damage in the End Phase due to the effect of Where Arf Thou?.
Workman activated Pot of Greed, and Nguyen Chained Master’s effect to flip Slime face-up. Workman drew 2 cards and then Slime’s effect activated. Nguyen Chained the effect of Droll & Lock Bird, and then Slime’s effect resolved, allowing Nguyen to Special Summon Mimighoul Dragon from his Deck before taking control of Slime. Workman Flip Summoned Cerberus next, and banished the top 3 cards of his Deck before giving control of the Cerberus to Nguyen. Nguyen flipped Mimighoul Room next, Special Summoning Mimighoul Dragon face-down to Workman’s field. Unable to even Flip Summon the Dragon, Workman conceded.

Mimighoul Dungeon seals Duel 2 for Nguyen! The Match is going to a third and final Duel!
Duel Three

Its effect activated, and Nguyen added Mimighoul Dungeon from his Deck to his hand before taking control of the Flower. He combined Flower and Dragon to Xyz Summon Lyrilusc – Assembled Nightingale and then combined Ripple Bird and Promenade Thrush to Summon Number F0: Utopic Future Zexal. Tessera was an Xyz Material attached to Promenade Thrush and dropped into the Graveyard when Nguyen Xyz Summoned Number F0, so Workman activated Tessera’s effect to Special Summon Edea from his Deck. He then used Edea’s effect to Special Summon Eidos from his Deck. Nguyen activated Dungeon and used its effect to add Mimighoul Fairy from his Deck to his hand. He then activated its effect in his hand to Special Summon it face-down to Workman’s field. He attacked directly with Assembled Nightingale thanks to its effect, and then activated Life Hack in the Damage Step! Assembled Nightingale’s ATK jumped up to 7800 due to the effect of Life Hack, and all damage dealt to Workman would be halved for the rest of the turn. Nightingale’s first attack inflicted 3900 points of damage, and then it attacked directly again for another 3900 points of damage!
