Advanced Format Round 13 Feature Match: Maurice Anderson Ickes vs. Henry Louis Gullens

We’re almost at the end! In this Round 13 Advanced Format Feature Match, we have two Duelists that are  both local to Ohio. Maurice Anderson Ickes is playing the DoomZ Deck, a strategy that has been incredibly popular all weekend thanks to its ability to build powerful end boards. Meanwhile, Henry Louis Gullens is playing the Mitsurugi Deck, a strategy that has seen competitive success for the last couple of formats thanks to powerful cards such as Ame no Murakumo no Mitsurugi. Each of these Duelists has a 9-3 record, and they’re competing to earn some additional prizing based on their final standings after Swiss.

Duel 1

Ickes won the die roll and chose to go first! He opened with Plundered Power Patron Plane – Vidolia, Dimension Shifter, Medius the Pure, Mulcharmy Fuwalos, and Forbidden Crown. He started by Normal Summoning Medius and Special Summoning Power Patron DoomZ from the Deck. He used Power Patron’s effect to Special Summon Doomz Break – Diactorus and equip it with the Power Patron, then used Diactorus to Xyz Summon DoomZ XIII Over – Graflareio! He used Power Patron’s effect to search for DoomZ Raiders, then used Graflareio’s effect to search for DoomZ Change. He activated Raiders, then used its effect to destroy Graflareio; in the following chain, he Special Summoned DoomZ V Five – Amalthe and searched for DoomZ XII Zero – Drastea, then Special Summoned DoomZ VII Seven – Elara and Set DoomZ Command “A.D.R.A.S.T.E.I.A.” to his backrow. He used Elara and Amalthe to Xyz Summon Springans Merrymaker, used it to make Gigantic “Champion” Sargas, then searched for ~!Therion “King” Regulus! He Special Summoned Regulus by equipping it with Power Patron DoomZ, then Special Summoned Drastea and equipped it with  DoomZ Command “D.O.O.M.D.U.R.G” by destroying the Power Patron DoomZ

Next, Ickes activated Change, then destroyed Change with the effect of Drastea, allowing him to send DoomZ Destruction from his Deck to the Graveyard and add it back to hand, as well as equip Jupredo the Shademachine Power Patron to Therion “King” Regulus. He activated Drastea’s effect and Special Summoned DoomZ XII End – Drastrius by destroying Jupredo the Shademachine Power Patron, then searched for Prohibited Power Patron Portal – Terminus. He activated Terminus, sending Jupredo from his Extra Deck to the Graveyard to search for Vidolium the Unstable Power Patron of Unity. He then activated Vidolium in the Pendulum Scale, and used its effect to Special Summon Jupredo from the Graveyard. Ickes activated Vidolium’s other effect to search for another copy of Terminus, then activated Plundered Power Patron Plane – Vidolia, revealing  Jupiter the Power Patron of Destruction in his Extra Deck and banishing Mulcharmy Fuwalos from hand to Special Summon back Jupredo from the Graveyard. Finally, he used the two Jupredo to Xyz Summon Varudras, the Final Bringer of the End Times, Set two cards to his backrow, and ended his turn. 

Gullens drew for turn, but knew that he could not break through Ickes’ board with the cards he had in hand, and so he conceded. 

Duel 2

Gullens chose to go first in the second Duel! He started by activating Pre-Preparation of Rites, searching for Ame no Habakiri no Mitsurugi and Mitsurugi Mirror. On resolution, Ickes activated the effect of Droll & Lock Bird, and Gullens Chained Mitsurugi Prayers, Tributing Habakiri from hand! Gullens searched for and Special Summoned Mitsurugi no Mikoto, Kusanagi, then added the Habakiri back to hand. Next, he Normal Summoned Lamia, then used Lamia and Kusanagi to Xyz Summon Number 41: Bagooska the Terribly Tired Tapir before ending his turn. 

Ickes opened with Mulcharmy Fuwalos, DoomZ Raiders, DoomZ XII Zero – Drastea, and DoomZ VII Seven – Elara, then drew Vidolium the Unstable Power Patron of Unity for turn! He activated DoomZ Raiders, then activated the effect of DoomZ XII Zero – Drastea, destroying Raiders, Special Summoning Drastea, and equipping Drastea with DoomZ Command “D.O.O.M.D.U.R.G”. In the following chain, Ickes used the effect of Raiders to destroy Bagooska! Next, Ickes Normal Summoned DoomZ VII Seven – Elara and Set DoomZ Command “A.D.R.A.S.T.E.I.A.” to his backrow. He equipped DoomZ Command “A.D.R.A.S.T.E.I.A.” to Elara, then used Elara’s effect to Xyz Summon Doomz Break – Diactorus! He then used Diactorus to Xyz Summon DoomZ XIII Over – Graflareio, then used Graflareio’s effect to search for DoomZ Change

Ickes activated DoomZ Change, then Chained the effect of Drastea to destroy Change. He destroyed DoomZ V Five – Amalthe from his Deck, then searched for another DoomZ XII Zero – Drastea, added Raiders back to hand, and Special Summoned the Drastea. Ickes entered the Battle Phase, attacking Gullens’ Life Points directly with Graflareio and Drastea. Ickes then activated Drastea’s effect, but Mullens Chained Dominus Impulse! In Main Phase 2, Ickes activated Vidolium the Unstable Power Patron of Unity in the Pendulum Scale, then used its effect to search forProhibited Power Patron Portal – Terminus. He activated Terminus, sending Jupredo the Shademachine Power Patron from his Deck to the Graveyard, then equipped DoomZ Command “A.D.R.A.S.T.E.I.A.” to Graflareio. He destroyed Graflareio and Special Summoned Jupredo from the Graveyard, then Special Summoned a second Jupredo and Xyz Summoned Varudras, the Final Bringer of the End Times! Finally, he activated DoomZ Raiders, and ended his turn. 

Gullens started his turn by activating Pot of Extravagance, but Ickes Chained the effect of Varudras, negating it! Gullens was unable to make any other plays, revealing two copies of Mitsurugi Mirror in his hand, and conceded.

With the victory, Ickes improves to 10-3!
