Top 8 Feature Match: Mohammed Khan vs. Edwin Diaz
We’re just 3 rounds away from crowning a new YCS Champion! In this Feature Match, we have the only non-Magician Pendulum Decks left in the tournament. YCS Dallas 2017 winner Mohammed Imran Khan, who took SPYRALs to the top after defeating his younger brother in the finals, is looking to make it to the top here. This time, he’s the last SPYRAL Duelist standing. He’s facing off against the last Trickstar Duelist left in the room, Edwin Diaz. Only one of these Duelists will make it to Top 4. Who will it be? It’s time to Duel!
Duel 1
Diaz won the roll and elected to go first. He started off with Terraforming to add Trickstar Light Stage from Deck to hand. Next, he activated it and used the effect to add Trickstar Candina from Deck to hand. Trickstar Candina was Normal Summoned and its effect added Trickstar Lycoris. He then activated Trickstar Lycoris’s effect to swap with Trickstar Candina. He Set 3 to the back and passed.
Khan drew Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit for turn and took 200 damage. It was added to his hand of SPYRAL Resort, SPYRAL Sleeper, Foolish Burial, SPYRAL Tough, and Reinforcement of the Army. He Set Reinforcement of the Army and Foolish Burial then activated SPYRAL Resort. He then Normal Summoned SPYRAL Tough and used the effect calling Monsters. Diaz chained Cosmic Cyclone which banished Khan’s Reinforcement of the Army. SPYRAL Tough’s effect revealed Solemn Judgment on top of Diaz’s Deck. SPYRAL Resort’s effect was activated but Diaz Chained another Cosmic Cyclone to banish it. Then Khan activated the Set Foolish Burial to dump SPYRAL Quik-Fix from the Deck to the Graveyard. Quik-Fix’s effect was activated, discarding SPYRAL Sleeper to Special Summon SPYRAL Quik-Fix. SPYRAL Quik-Fix’s effect added SPYRAL GEAR – Big Red to hand, and after that resolved, Diaz activated Trickstar Reincarnation then Chained Droll & Lock Bird. Khan banished SPYRAL GEAR – Big Red and Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit to make Khan draw zero cards due to Droll & Lock Bird’s effect. Khan then used SPYRAL Quik-Fix and SPYRAL Tough to Link Summon SPYRAL Double Helix. He called Traps and Special Summoned another SPYRAL Tough from the Deck. He used SPYRAL Tough’s effect to destroy Trickstar Light Stage. He attacked with both SPYRALs.
Diaz drew to 2 cards in hand. He Normal Summoned Trickstar Candina to add Trickstar Light Stage, then activated Light Stage to add Trickstar Lilybell. Lilybell’s effect activated to Special Summon itself, then Diaz used both monsters to Link Summon Trickstar Holly Angel. Diaz used Trickstar Reincarnation’s effect to Special Summon Trickstar Lilybell from the Graveyard to the center Main Monster Zone which allowed Holly Angel to burn for 200 plus another 200 from Trickstar Light Stage. Holly Angel gained 200 ATK since a Trickstar Monster inflicted that much effect damage. Next, Trickstar Lilybell attacked directly, then Trickstar Lilybell’s effect let Diaz add Trickstar Lycoris back to hand, Lycoris swapped into the other zone Holly Angel pointed to, burning for another 200 and having Holly Angel gain another 200 ATK. Holly Angel then attacked over SPYRAL Double Helix. He Set one to the back and passed.
Khan drew Dragon Ravine. He used SPYRAL Double Helix’s effect, calling monster but revealing a Spell. Khan couldn’t deal with the Holly Angel and conceded to go into the second Duel.
Duel 2
Khan elected to go first. He started with a hand of SPYRAL Tough, Destrudo the Lost Dragon’s Frisson, SPYRAL GEAR – Big Red, One for One, and Soul Charge. He activated One for One, discarding Destrudo the Lost Dragon’s Frisson to Special Summon SPYRAL Quik-Fix! He activated the effect to add SPYRAL GEAR – Drone from Deck to hand. He activated SPYRAL GEAR – Drone, letting him look at the top 3 cards of Diaz’s deck: Honest, Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit, and Droll & Lock Bird. He rearranged them as he wanted. Next, both SYPRALs were used to Link Summon SPYRAL Double Helix. He activated the effect and Diaz chained Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit to destroy SPYRAL Double Helix. The effect revealed Droll & Lock Bird and Khan added SPYRAL Master Plan to hand. Next, SPYRAL GEAR – Big Red brought back SPYRAL Double Helix. Next, SPYRAL Quik-Fix’s effect was activated, discarding SPYRAL Master Plan to Special Summon Quik-Fix. Next, Soul Charge was activated to Summon all of the monsters from Khan’s Graveyard, dropping Khan to 5000 LP. He used SPYRAL Quik-Fix and SPYRAL GEAR – Drone to Xyz Summon Sylvan Princessprite. He used the effect, hitting Solemn Strike to add to his hand. He then used SPYRAL Master Plan’s effect to add SPYRAL MISSION – Rescue from Deck to hand. He then discarded Rescue to Special Summon SPYRAL Quik-Fix, whose effect added another SPYRAL GEAR – Big Red from Deck to hand. Next, SPYRAL Double Helix, Quik-Fix, Master Plan, and another monster were used to Link Summon Saryuja Skull Dread! SPYRAL Master Plan’s effect resolved first, adding SPYRAL Resort and another SPYRAL card, then Khan drew 4 cards and put 3 on the bottom of the Deck. He then used SPYRAL MISSION – Rescue’s effect to Special Summon Master Plan back to the field, then Khan used it and Destrudo the Lost Dragon’s Frisson to Xyz Summon Number 42! He used the effect to fill his field with Battle Eagle Tokens. He used one of the Tokens to Link Summon Link Spider, then used it and another Token to Link Summon Ib the World Chalice Priestess, then used the other two Tokens to Link Summon Proxy Dragon. He activated SPYRAL Resort, using the effect to add SPYRAL Super Agent from Deck to hand, then banished 3 SPYRALs to Special Summon SPYRAL Sleeper and equip it with a SPYRAL GEAR – Last Resort. He Set 2 to the back row and in the End Phase, shuffled SPYRAL GEAR – Drone back to the Deck to keep SPYRAL Resort on the field.
Diaz drew and activated Trickstar Light Stage. It resolved and Diaz added Trickstar Candina. Trickstar Light Stage tried to freeze one of Khan’s face-downs but Khan chained it: SPYRAL MISSION – Rescue. Diaz activated a second Trickstar Light Stage but Khan chained SPYRAL Sleeper’s effect to destroy it. Diaz then Normal Summoned Trickstar Candina, but its effect was negated by Khan’s Solemn Strike! Next, Diaz banished 5 cards from his Extra Deck to Special Summon Eater of Millions! Eater of Millions attacked into SPYRAL Sleeper to banish it face-down and send the equipped SPYRAL GEAR – Last Resort to the Graveyard. Khan Set one card to the back and passed. In the End Phase, Khan used SPYRAL MISSION – Rescue to add back SPYRAL GEAR – Last Resort.
Khan drew Monster Reborn for turn! He activated SPYRAL Resort to add SPYRAL Tough from Deck to hand. In a new Chain, Diaz activated Trickstar Reincarnation, Khan chained Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, and Diaz chained Droll & Lock Bird! Khan got to keep his hand but couldn’t do any more searching or drawing this turn. SPYRAL Super Agent’s effect activated, calling Spells and revealing Scapegoat off the top of Diaz’s Deck. Next, SPYRAL Tough’s effect activated and that was enough for Diaz. We’re going into a third and decisive Duel!
Duel 3
Diaz elected to go first. He started off with Terraforming to add Trickstar Light Stage to hand. That was activated to add Trickstar Candina and that was Normal Summoned. Her effect added Trickstar Lycoris from Deck to hand. He used Lycoris’s effect to swap with Candina, Set one and passed.
Khan drew for turn, taking 400 damage. Diaz Set 3 cards to the back and also Set his Dragon Ravine to the Field Spell Zone. Next, he Normal Summoned SPYRAL Quik-Fix. Its effect let him add SPYRAL GEAR – Drone from Deck to hand. Trickstar Lycoris plus Light Stage burned for another 400. Diaz had Trickstar Reincarnation to force Khan to banish his hand to draw 2 cards: SPYRAL Super Agent and SPYRAL GEAR – Big Red. Khan took another 600 damage, leaving Khan at 6600 LP. Khan used SPYRAL Super Agent calling Monsters but revealed a Torrential Tribute on top of Diaz’s Deck. Khan then activated his Set Foolish Burial to send SPYRAL Master Plan to the Graveyard, then SPYRAL GEAR – Big Red came down to Special Summon that same Master Plan. Master Plan’s effect activated, letting him add SPYRAL MISSION – Rescue to hand, which also burned him for another 400 damage from Lycoris and Light Stage. Khan used SPYRAL Master Plan and SPYRAL Quik-Fix to Link Summon SPYRAL Double Helix. He used Master Plan’s effect to add SPYRAL Resort and SPYRAL Tough from Deck to hand. Next, Khan flipped up his Dragon Ravine and used the effect, sending SPYRAL Tough to the Graveyard to send Destrudo the Lost Dragon’s Frisson. Next, SPYRAL Quik-Fix was Special Summoned from the Graveyard by sending SPYRAL MISSION – Rescue from Khan’s hand to the Graveyard, SPYRAL Quik-Fix’s effect let Khan add SPYRAL GEAR – Last Resort to hand (and burned for another 400). Next, SPYRAL MISSION – Rescue was banished to Special Summon SPYRAL Tough from the Graveyard and SPYRAL Tough’s effect was activated, calling Traps with Torrential Tribute still on top of Diaz’s Deck. Trickstar Lycoris was sent to Diaz’s Graveyard. SPYRAL Double Helix’s effect was activated but Diaz Chained Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring to stop it. Dragon Ravine was sent to the Graveyard to activate SPYRAL Resort. Khan tried to use the effect, but Diaz Chained Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit to destroy the Field Spell. Destrudo the Lost Dragon’s Frisson came down next, halving Khan’s LP to 2900. Next, Destrudo and SPYRAL Quik-Fix were used to Synchro Summon Ancient Fairy Dragon! Its effect destroyed Trickstar Light Stage, gave Khan another 1000 LP and searched for another Dragon Ravine. Khan then flipped his Set Monster Reborn, Special Summoning SPYRAL Master Plan from the Graveyard. Master Plan’s effect added another SPYRAL MISSION – Rescue to hand. Next, SPYRAL Double Helix and SPYRAL Master Plan were used to Link Summon Decode Talker to the other Extra Monster Zone. SPYRAL GEAR – Last Resort was then equipped to SPYRAL Tough. Khan Set SPYRAL MISSION – Rescue then used Last Resort’s effect to send Rescue to the Graveyard. SPYRAL MISSION – Rescue’s effect was used to Special Summon SPYRAL Double Helix from the Graveyard. Khan then attacked with Decode Talker but Diaz used Trickstar Reincarnation to Special Summon Trickstar Lycoris. On the replay, Khan opted to attack with SPYRAL Tough instead. Diaz activated Honest in the Damage Step. In Main Phase 2, Khan sent Ancient Fairy Dragon and SPYRAL Tough to the Graveyard to Link Summon Ib the World Chalice Priestess! Decode Talker and SPYRAL Double Helix were also sent to Link Summon Firewall Dragon!
Diaz Normal Summoned Trickstar Candina and her effect added Trickstar Light Stage to hand. Next, Trickstar Light Stage came down to add another Trickstar Lycoris from Deck to hand. Next, Light Stage froze Khan’s Set Soul Charge. Diaz Set one and passed, and Soul Charge was sent to the Graveyard.
Khan drew for turn and took another 400, putting him at 1900 LP. Time was called here. Firewall Dragon’s effect added SPYRAL Tough back to Khan’s hand, and Khan took another 400 damage, putting him at 1500 LP. SPYRAL Tough’s effect called monsters and targeted Trickstar Lycoris. The top of Diaz’s deck was Effect Veiler, so Diaz’s Trickstar Lycoris was destroyed. Next, SPYRAL Super Agent came down, calling Monster and targeted Diaz’s only Set Spell/Trap as its target. It was chained: Torrential Tribute! When Torrential Tribute resolved, Ib the World Chalice Priestess’s effect was used to prevent Firewall Dragon and SPYRAL Tough from being destroyed. Khan attacked with Firewall Dragon and SPYRAL Tough, bringing Diaz down to 3600 LP. Khan then activated Dragon Ravine and discarded Terraforming to send Destrudo the Lost Dragon’s Frisson to the Graveyard. He passed.
In turn 1 of time, Diaz Normal Summoned Trickstar Candina and searched for Trickstar Lilybell. Lilybell’s effect activated, Special Summoning itself. Lilybell attacked directly for 1000 total points of damage. Lilybell’s effect added Trickstar Lycoris back to his hand. He used Trickstar Lycoris to swap with Lilybell.
In turn 2 of time, Khan drew and took another 400, bringing him down to just 100 LP. He can’t add another card to hand or activate a Spell or Trap without going to 0 LP. He used SPYRAL Tough’s effect, declaring “monster” and targeting Lycoris. Diaz’s Deck had Droll & Lock Bird on top, so Trickstar Lycoris was destroyed. He then paid for Destrudo the Lost Dragon’s Frisson, going down to 50 LP! Destrudo the Lost Dragon’s Frisson came out in Attack Position and all of Khan’s monsters attacked to end the Duel and the Match!
Khan wins the Match in Duel 3 with just 50 LP left! Khan advances to the Top 4!
