Luis Angel Penaflores Ortega from Mexico City, Mexico is the 2018 National Champion of Mexico. Consequently, he earned a 2-Round Bye in the Central America WCQ, and is gearing up for his first Duel of the tournament here in Round 3. He’s up against Oscar Luis Rodriguez Hernandez from Monterrey, Mexico, who currently holds a 2-0 record in the tournament. Only one of these Duelists can advance undefeated. It’s time to Duel!

Duel One

Rodriguez activated Terraforming to add Trickstar Light Stage to his hand and then activated Light Stage to add Trickstar Candina to his hand.

He Normal Summoned Candina and used its effect to add Trickstar Lycoris to his hand. Next he activated Pot of Desires, banishing the top 10 cards of his Deck face-down to draw 2 cards. Rodriguez Set 3 cards to his back row and then Special Summoned Lycoris to his field by returning Candina to his hand.

Penaflores opened up with Skill Drain, Terraforming, True Draco Heritage, Imperial Order, and Majesty Maiden, the True Dracocaster. He drew Infinite Impermanence for his turn and lost 400 Life Points due to the effects of Lycoris and Light Stage. Rodriguez activated Trickstar Reincarnation in the Draw Phase, and Penaflores Chained Infinite Impermanence to negate Lycoris’s effect so he wouldn’t take any damage when he drew a new hand. He banished the 5 cards in his hand to draw 5 more and then Set 4 of them to his back row. He activated Pot of Duality next, revealing Card of Demise, Disciples of the True Dracophoenix, and True Draco Apocalypse from the top of his Deck. He added Card of Demise to his hand and shuffled the other 2 cards back into his Deck. He activated Demise, but lost out to Rodriguez’s Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring.

Rodriguez Summoned Trickstar Candina and activated its effect. Penaflores Chained Infinite Impermance to negate its effect, but Rodriguez Chained the effect of the Lycoris in his hand to return Candina to his hand and Special Summon the Lycoris in Attack Position. He was then able to resolve the Candina’s effect to add Trickstar Reincarnation from his Deck to his hand. He used the effect of Light Stage to target Penaflores’s face-down Lose 1 Turn, which Penaflores Chained. Next, Rodriguez activated another copy of Pot of Desires, banishing 10 more cards from his Deck to draw 2. He attacked directly with both copies of Lycoris, dropping Penaflores down to 4000 Life Points. Rodriguez Set a card to his back row before passing.

Penaflores drew Disciples and then lost 800 Life Points due to the effects of both Lycoris and Light Stage. He conceded, completely helpless to defend himself against Rodriguez’s field.

Oscar Luis Rodriguez Hernandez uses his Trickstar Deck to defeat Mexico’s National Champion in Duel 1!

Duel Two

Penaflores opened up with Terraforming, Imperial Order, The Monarchs Stormforth, Anti-Spell Fragrance, and Card of Demise.

He activated Terraforming to add Dragonic Diagram to his hand and Rodriguez sent Droll & Lock Bird from his hand to the Graveyard to activate its effect. Penaflores Set Anti-Spell Fragrance and Imperial Order before passing.

Rodriguez drew a card, and then Penaflores flipped Anti-Spell Fragrance in Rodriguez’s Draw Phase. Rodriguez used Red Reboot from his hand! He paid 4000 Life Points, Anti-Spell Fragrance went back face-down, and Penaflores Set Imperial Iron Wall from his Deck. Penaflores was unable to activate any Trap Cards for the rest of the turn! Next, Rodriguez activated Pot of Desires, banishing the top 10 cards of his Deck to draw 2 cards. He Summoned Candina next, and used its effect to add Trickstar Light Stage to his hand. He activated Light Stage to add Lycoris to his hand, and then attacked directly with Candina, dropping Penaflores down to 6000 Life Points. Next, he activated the effects of 2 copies of Lycoris from his hand in Chain, returning Candina to his hand to Summon both. He attacked directly with both of them, dropping Penaflores down to 2400 Life Points. In Main Phase 2, Rodriguez used the effect of his Light Stage to pin down Imperial Order. He Set a card to his back row before passing. Imperial Order was sent to the Graveyard in the End Phase.

Penaflores drew a card and dropped down to 1600 Life Points. He activated Dragonic Diagram and tried to use its effect, but lost out to Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit! He promptly conceded with no monsters in his hand to Summon.
