Round 2 Feature Match: Jeff Jones vs. Vishon Bhatia

August 25th, 2018

We’re in Round 2 of the UDS Summer Invitational here in Kansas City. Many Duelists used their UDS points to earn a first round bye in this tournament, but we’re past that – it’s time for them to enter the fray! Jeff Jones won the previous Summer Invitational and is looking to take home a second championship belt with his Sky Striker Deck. His opponent is Vishon Bhatia, playing a SPYRAL Sky Striker strategy. It’s time to Duel!

Duel 1

Bhatia won the die roll and chose to play first. He began with Sky Striker Mobilize – Engage! to add Sky Striker Mecha – Hornet Drones to his hand. He played Hornet Drones and used the token to Link Summon Sky Striker Ace – Kagari. He used the effect, prompting Jones to activate Ghost Belle & Haunted Mansion, and Bhatia played Called by the Grave! Bhatia grabbed back a Sky Striker Spell and Set one card in his back row to finish the turn.

Jones had a hand of Sky Striker Mobilize – Engage!, Terraforming, Sky Striker Mecharmory – Hercules Base, and Shared Ride. He drew Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring for his turn. He played Engage to get Sky Striker Ace – Raye in his hand, then played Terraforming to get Sky Striker Airspace – Area Zero. He played Area Zero and Raye. Area Zero activated, targeting Raye, and he Chained Raye’s effect to Special Summon Kagari. Area Zero put Sky Striker Mecha Modules – Multirole in his hand, and Kagari put Engage in his hand. Multirole sent Area Zero to the Graveyard for its effect, so Bhatia could not respond to Jones’s Spell Cards this turn. Jones had his Kagari attack Bhatia’s Kagari, destroying both monsters. Jones Special Summoned Raye from the Graveyard and attacked directly. In Main Phase 2, he Link Summoned Sky Striker Ace – Shizuku. He played Engage again, this time getting Sky Striker Maneuver – Jamming Waves! and using it to destroy Bhatia’s Set Hornet Drones. He Set Shared Ride. In the End Phase, Shizuku added Sky Striker Mecha – Widow Anchor to Jones’s hand. Still in the End Phase, he activated it. Then, he used Multirole to Set Widow Anchor, Engage, and Area Zero.

Bhatia played Engage, and Jones negated it with Ash Blossom. Bhatia played SPYRAL Super Agent, correctly guessing that Jones’s top card was a Spell – it was Sky Striker Mecha – Eagle Booster. When it hit the field, it was negated by Widow Anchor. He then equipped Super Agent with SPYRAL GEAR – Last Resort. The Agent attacked Shizuku, and Jones Special Summoned Raye. Jones used Raye’s effect to Special Summon Shizuku, getting Engage in the End Phase.

Jones drew Infinite Impermanence. He flipped Area Zero, using it on Shizuku – he added Hornet Drones to his hand. Multirole then sent Area Zero to the Graveyard for its effect. Jones played Engage to get Sky Striker Maneuver – Afterburners!, then flipped his other Engage. He added Raye from his Deck to his hand, and drew Ghost Belle. He activated Hornet Drones, then Link Summoned Kagari to add Engage to his hand. He played Afterburners to destroy his own Kagari along with Last Resort. Bhatia knew it was all over now, and conceded the first Duel!

Duel 2

Bhatia played first again, starting with Foolish Burial Goods. He sent SPYRAL MISSION – Rescue to the Graveyard. He Set two back row cards to finish.

Jones had Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit, Infinite Impermanence, 2 Widow Anchor, Engage, and Hornet Drones. He played Engage to get Eagle Booster. He played Hornet Drones and Link Summoned Sky Striker Ace – Hayate. Hayate attacked directly, sending Sky Striker Ace – Raye to the Graveyard. In Main Phase 2, he used Hayate to play Kagari, getting Engage back to his hand. He played it to get Jamming Waves, and used that to destroy SPYRAL Mission – Assault. He Link Summoned Shizuku next, then Set both Widow Anchors, Eagle Booster, and Infinite Impermanence. In the End Phase, he added Multirole to his hand with Shizuku.

Bhaltia played Hornet Drones and Link Summoned Kagari, returning Hornet Drones to his hand. He played it again, using Kagari and the token to play Knightmare Phoenix. Its effect discarded SPYRAL Master Plan to destroy Jones’s Set Widow Anchor – Jones Chained it to negate Phoenix but did not take control of it. Bhaltia banished SPYRAL MISSION – Rescue from his Graveyard to Special Summon Master Plan in Defense Position. Jones flipped his second Widow Anchor to negate and take control of Master Plan! Bhaltia went to the Battle Phase, and flipped Called by the Grave to banish Raye from Jones’s Graveyard. Bhaltia decided to pass the turn, and Master Plan returned to his side of the field.

Jones drew Terraforming and played it to get Area Zero. He played Multirole and Area Zero, Area Zero sent Shizuku to the Graveyard to add Raye to Jones’s hand. Multirole then sent Area Zero to the Graveyard for its effect. Area Zero Special Summoned Raye from the Deck, and Jones used it to Link Summon Kagari. He added Engage to his hand, playing it to search for Sky Striker Mecha – Shark Cannon and draw Typhoon. Kagari destroyed Knightmare Phoenix in battle, then was used to play Shizuku. Jones Set Typhoon, then used Multirole to Set Area Zero and Widow Anchor on the field.

Bhaltia used Master Plan to get Rescue to his hand. He banished Assault to Special Summon Super Agent, and it targeted Jones’s Set Widow Anchor – Jones flipped it to negate and take control of Super Agent. Jones then flipped Eagle Booster to protect Shizuku. Bhaltia sent Master Plan to attack Super Agent, losing the battle but using its effect to add SPYRAL Resort and SPYRAL Quik-Fix to his hand. In Main Phase 2 he played Resort, and Jones flipped Typhoon to destroy it. Bhatia played Quik-Fix, and it was negated by Infinite Impermanence! Bhaltia played SPYRAL GEAR – Big Red to bring Master Plan to the field, using it and Quik-Fix to Link Summon SPYRAL Double Helix. He used its effect, but Jones had Ghost Ogre to destroy it! Its effect still resolved; Bhaltia correctly guessed that Jones’s next card was a Spell Card (Reinforcement of the Army), and added Super Agent to his hand. He Set one card in his back row. In the End Phase, Jones used Multirole to Set Eagle Booster and Engage.

Jones drew Reinforcement of the Army. He flipped Area Zero, then Set Reinforcement. Area Zero sent it to the Graveyard to add Hercules Base to his hand. He played Hercules Base, sending it to the Graveyard for Multirole. He then flipped Engage, searching for Afterburners and drawing Infinite Impermanence. Bhaltia then flipped Rescue, adding Quik-Fix to his hand. Jones played Shark Cannon, banishing Double Helix from the Graveyard. Afterburners took out Super Agent. Jones used his Shizuku to Link Summon Kagari, adding Shark Cannon to his hand again. He played it, this time banishing Super Agent. Kagari attacked directly. He Set Infinite Impermanence, and in the End Phase Jones began resolving Multirole. The round timer ended here, and Jones had the higher Life Points, making him the winner of this Duel and the Match!

Jeff Jones is starting the tournament undefeated, with Sky Strikers!
