Round 10 Feature Match: Doug Zeeff vs. Jordan Sanchez

August 25th, 2019

We’re in the final round of Swiss, and these Duelists are on the bubble. Only the winner here will have a record strong enough to make a shot at the Top 32! Doug Zeeff is here from Michigan, playing Altergeists. He just made it to the Top 4 of the UDS Invitational last week with the same strategy. He’s up against Jordan Sanchez, from Albuquerque, using Sky Strikers with Mystic Mine.

Duel 1

Sanchez won the dice roll and chose to play first. He started with Reinforcement of the Army to add Sky Striker Ace – Raye to his hand, then used Foolish Burial Goods to send Metalfoes Fusion to the Graveyard. He immediately used Metalfoes Fusion’s effect in the Graveyard to draw a new card. He Normal Summoned Raye and Link Summoned Sky Striker Ace – Shizuku. He Set a back row card and used Shizuku to add Sky Striker Mobilize – Engage! to his hand.

Zeeff had a hand of Lost Wind, Personal Spoofing, Altergeist Marionetter, Solemn Judgment, and Altergeist Manifestation. He drew Pot of Extravagance! He used it, banishing six cards from his Extra Deck to draw Solemn Strike and another Pot of Extravagance! Zeeff Normal Summoned Marionetter and used its effect, and Sanchez destroyed it with Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit. Marionetter’s effect Set Altergeist Protocol on the field. Zeeff Set Lost Wind, Personal Spoofing, Solemn Judgment, and Solemn Strike.

Sanchez used Sky Striker Maneuver – Jamming Waves!, destroying Lost Wind. Zeeff Chained it to negate Shizuku. Sanchez continued, using Engage, and Zeeff negated it with Solemn Judgment. Sanchez used Shizuku to play Sky Striker Ace – Kagari, and Zeeff dropped to 2500 Life Points by playing Solemn Strike! Then, Zeeff used Personal Spoofing. He shuffled Manifestation to the Deck to search for Altergeist Multifaker. Since he had resolved Spoofing, he Special Summoned Multifaker, which Special Summoned Altergeist Silquitous. Sanchez played Mystic Mine. Zeeff used the chance to activate Silquitous’s effect, bouncing Multifaker back to his hand by bouncing Mystic Mine. Sanchez activated the Mine again and passed.

Zeeff drew Crackdown. He played Pot of Extravagance, this time drawing Solemn Strike and Marionetter. He Set Crackdown and Strike.

Sanchez played Sky Striker Mecha Modules – Multirole. Then, he used Sky Striker Mecharmory – Hercules Base on Silquitous. Zeeff responded with Personal Spoofing to shuffle Silquitous back in his Deck and added Altergeist Meluseek to his hand. Hercules Base had nothing to equip to and simply went to the Graveyard. In the End Phase, Mystic Mine was destroyed, and Multirole Set Engage on the field.

Zeeff drew Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring. He flipped Altergeist Protocol, then Special Summoned Multifaker, which Special Summoned Meluseek. He Link Summoned Altergeist Hexstia, and Meluseek’s effect added Altergeist Kunquery to his hand. Sanchez used Widow Anchor to take control of Hexstia for the turn. Zeeff Normal Summoned Marionetter, which Set Manifestation. Then, he used Marionetter’s effect to send itself to the Graveyard and Special Summon Meluseek. Meluseek attacked directly, and its effect took out Sanchez’s Set Engage. In the End Phase, Hexstia returned to Zeeff, and Multirole Set Widow Anchor.

Zeeff flipped Manifestation to Special Summon Multifaker, which Special Summoned Silquitous. Sanchez simply passed the turn. In the End Phase, Zeeff used Spoofing to shuffle away Kunquery from his hand and add Marionetter to his hand. Then, he used Silquitous, bouncing Manifestation to bounce Widow Anchor. He Chained it to take Hexstia, albeit only for a moment. Multirole Set Jamming Waves on the field.

Zeeff drew Meluseek. He played Marionetter, using its effect to send Meluseek to the Graveyard and Special Summon another Marionetter. That gave him enough ATK wipe out Sanchez’s Life Points!

Duel 2

Sanchez started with Foolish Burial Goods to send Metalfoes Fusion to the Graveyard. Pot of Desires came next for two more cards. Upstart Goblin and Metalfoes Fusion each let him draw another card after that. He used Sky Striker Mecha – Hornet Drones, then Link Summoned Sky Striker Ace – Shizuku. He Set three back row cards, and Shizuku added Sky Striker Mobilize – Engage! to his hand.

Zeeff had Solemn Judgment, Personal Spoofing, Altergeist Silquitous, Altergeist Meluseek, and Altergeist Kunquery. He drew Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring – just a bit too late. He Normal Summoned Meluseek and tried to attack directly, but Sanchez used Sky Striker Mecha – Widow Anchor. Zeeff Set Judgment and Spoofing.

Sanchez played Engage, and Zeeff used Ash Blossom. Zeeff then flipped Spoofing, shuffling Silquitous into the Deck, and Sanchez used his own Ash Blossom. He used Foolish Burial Goods to send Metalfoes Fusion to the Graveyard again, and immediately used it to draw a card. He used Shizuku to play Kagari, and Zeeff flipped over Solemn Judgment. Sanchez continued by playing Reinforcement of the Army to get Sky Striker Ace – Raye, and Normal Summoned it. He Link Summoned Hayate and attacked directly, and Zeeff played Kunquery from his hand to negate the attack! Sanchez Link Summoned a new Shizuku. In the End Phase, Shizuku added Sky Striker Airspace – Area Zero to his hand.

Zeeff drew Rivalry of Warlords. He used Spoofing to shuffle Kunquery into the Deck, and Sanchez had another Ash Blossom to negate it! Zeeff attacked with Meluseek, and once again Sanchez used Widow Anchor to prevent the attack. Zeeff Set Rivalry.

In the Standby Phase, Zeeff used Spoofing to shuffle Meluseek into the Deck and get Altergeist Multifaker. Sanchez played Area Zero and Set a back row card. He tried using Area Zero with that Set card, but only revealed three copies of Twin Twisters! Sanchez attacked with Shizuku and Zeeff flipped Rivalry. Thanks to his trap he Special Summoned Multifaker, which Special Summoned Silquitous. Then, he used Silquitous to bounce both Multifaker and Shizuku. Sanchez Special Summoned Raye from the Graveyard in Defense Position.

Zeeff drew Meluseek. He used Spoofing to shuffle it away and get Marionetter, and he played that to get Altergeist Protocol. He sent Marionetter to destroy Raye, and Silquitous attacked directly. In Main Phase 2, he Link Summoned Altergeist Hexstia.

In the Draw Phase, Zeeff flipped Protocol and Special Summoned Multifaker. Multifaker Special Summoned Silquitous. Sanchez used Area Zero on his Set card again, sending the Set Metalfoes Fusion to the Graveyard to add Jamming Waves to his hand. He then used Metalfoes Fusion to draw a card. He Normal Summoned Raye and attacked. Silquitous bounced Multifaker and Raye. Sanchez Set a back row card. In the End Phase, he used Spoofing to shuffle back Multifaker, and Sanchez used his third Ash Blosso. Zeeff used Protocol, tributing Hexstia to negate Ash Blossom. Spoofing added Marionetter to his hand, and Hexstia added Meluseek.

Zeeff drew Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit. He played Marionetter, which Set Manifestation. He used Marionetter’s other effect, sending Protocol to the Graveyard to Special Summon Hexstia. Silquitous, Marionetter, and Hexstia attacked to drop Sanchez to 1700 Life Points. In Main Phase 2, Zeeff used Silquitous and Marionetter for another Hexstia. Silquitous’s effect added Protocol to his hand, and he Set it.

In the Standby Phase, Zeeff flipped Manifestation to Special Summon Silquitous. As Chain Link 2, he used Spoofing to shuffle an Altergeist from his hand away to get Multifaker. He Special Summoned Multifaker, which Special Summoned Kunquery. Sanchez used Area Zero on his Set card, and Zeeff used Ghost Ogre to destroy it first. Sanchez played Jamming Waves, and Hexstia tributed Silquitous to negate it. Sanchez tried to use Widow Anchor to negate Hexstia, but Zeeff flipped Protocol to keep Hexstia’s effect going. Sanchez was locked out of the game, conceded the Duel!
