Round 1 Feature Match: Thomas Robert Jefferson Brower vs. Andrew Brian Ostler
Welcome to YCS Portland! It’s the first YCS of the new Dueling season and it’s the first YCS in Portland, Oregon! 801 players have arrived looking to be the first in the World to win the newest YCS Prize Card Duel Link Dragon, the Duel Dragon! We’re starting off at Table 273 with Andrew Brian Ostler from Utah playing the Tenyi monsters from Rising Rampage taking on Thomas Brower from California, a YCS first timer playing Dinosaur Crusadia Guardragon. It’s a new year of Dueling, and it’s time to Duel!
Duel 1
Brower won the roll and elected to go first. He started off with a Normal Summoned Crusadia Reclusia, and turned it into Crusadia Magius. He then activated One for One discarding Orcust Knightmare but Ostler chained Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring to negate it. Next, Brower activated Quick Launch, Special Summoning Rokket Tracer from the Deck! Brower then activated Crusadia Magius’s effect to add Crusadia Draco from his Deck to his hand. Rokket Tracer and Magius were sent to the Graveyard to Link Summon PSY-Framelord Lambda. Brower then Special Summoned Crusadia Draco and used it effect to add Crusadia Reclusia from the Graveyard to his hand. He then Special Summoned Reclusia, then banished Draco to Special Summon Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon from his hand, which brought Rokket Tracer back to the field. Tracer hit the yard to Link Summon Guardragon Elpy, then Reclusia and PSY-Framelord Lambda turned into Triple Burst Dragon. Reclusia’s effect let Brower Special Summon Tempest, Dragon Ruler of Storms from his Deck. Tempest and Triple Burst Dragon turned into Guardragon Agarpain. Agarpain’s effect Special Summoned Hot Red Dragon Archfiend Abyss from the Extra Deck, then Agarpain and Guardragon Elpy turned into Hieratic Seal of Heavenly Spheres. Brower then banished Orcust Knightmare from the Graveyard to send World Legacy – “World Wand” from the Deck to the Graveyard, whose effect was activated, banishing it to Special Summoned the banished Orcust Knightmare. Orcust Knightmare and Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon were sent to the Graveyard to Link Summon Galatea, the Orcust Automaton. Galatea’s effect shuffled back World Legacy – “World Wand” to Set Orcust Crescendo directly from the Deck.
Ostler drew Flawless Perfection of the Tenyi. He Special Summoned Tenyi Spirit – Vishuda. He sent it to the Graveyard to Link Summon Monk of the Tenyi. He then banished Tenyi Spirit – Vishuda to bounce Brower’s Hieratic Seal of Heavenly Spheres to the Extra Deck. Ostler then activated Flawless Perfection of the Tenyi. Next, he Set 2 copies of Fists of the Unrivaled Tenyi and passed.
Brower Special Summoned White Dragon Wyverbuster by banishing Triple Burst Dragon. Ostler activated Flawless Pefection’s effect to draw 2 cards, Brower chained Hot Red Dragon Archfiend Abyss’s effect to negate the Field Spell, Ostler chained Fists of the Unrivaled Tenyi to negate the Dragon’s effect, Brower chained the Set Orcust Crescendo to negate and destroy Fists, then Ostler chained the second Fists to negate Orcust Crescendo! Ostler drew Called by the Grave and Mare Mare.
Brower then banished Guardragon Elpy and Agarpain from the Graveyard to Special Summon Tempest, Dragon Ruler of Storms from the Graveyard. Brower used White Dragon Wyverbuster, Tempest and Galatea, the Orcust Automaton to Link Summon Borrelsword Dragon! White Dragon Wyverbuster’s Graveyard effect let Brower add Black Dragon Collapserpent from his Deck to his hand. White Dragon Wyverbuster was banished from the Graveyard to Special Summon Black Dragon Collapserpent from his hand. Black Dragon Collapserpent attacked over Monk of the Tenyi for 800 damage, then Borrelsword attacked directly, then Hot Red Dragon Archfiend Abyss, then Borrelsword’s effect turned Hot Red Dragon Archfiend Abyss to Defense Position, allowing the Link-4 monster to attack again and end the first Duel!
Duel 2
Ostler elected to go first. He started with a hand of Tenyi Spirit – Nahata, Tenyi Spirit – Mapura, Flawless Perfection of the Tenyi, Fists of the Unrivaled Tenyi and Pot of Desires. He started Pot of Desires, banishing the top 10 cards to draw Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring and Vessel for the Dragon Cycle. He Special Summoned Tenyi Spirit – Mapura in Defense Position, sent it to the Graveyard to Link Summon Monk of the Tenyi, then activated Vessel for the Dragon Cycle, sending Mare Mare to the Graveyard and adding Tenyi Spirit – Shthana from his Deck to his hand. He Special Summoned it, then used Monk and Tenyi Spirit – Shthana to Link Summon Shaman of the Tenyi. He used Shaman’s effect, discarding Tenyi Spirit – Nahata to Special Summon Mare Mare from the Graveyard. Mare Mare’s effect was used three times to Special Summon 3 Tokens and reducing its level by 3! He then used a Token to Link Summon Linkuriboh! Then, he used Shaman, Mare Mare and Linkuriboh to Link Summon Apollousa, Bow of the Goddess! Linkuriboh’s Graveyard effect Tributed a Token to Special Summon Linkuriboh from the Graveyard. He then activated Flawless Perfection of the Tenyi and passed.
Brower Tributed Ostler’s Apollousa, Bow of the Goddess to Special Summon Gameciel, the Sea Turtle Kaiju to Ostler’s side of the field! Brower then activated Fossil Dig but Ostler chained Fists of the Unrivaled Tenyi to negate it. Brower then activated Quick Launch to Special Summon Rokket Synchron. Because Brower Special Summoned an effect monster while Ostler controlled a non-Effect monster (one of the Mini Mare Mare Tokens) Ostler used Flawless Perfection of the Tenyi’s effect to draw Dinowrestler Pankratops and Kumongous, the Sticky String Kaiju. Brower activated a second Quick Paunch but Ostler negated that one with Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring. Brower Set a Monster and passed.
Ostler Tributed the Token and Linkuriboh to Tribute Summon Dinowrestler Pankratops. In the Battle Phase, Gameciel, the Sea Turtle Kaiju attacked over Rokket Synchron and Dinowrestler Pankratops attacked and destroyed Rokket Tracer. Ostler Set Called by the Grave and passed.
Brower Normal Summoned Souleating Oviraptor. He used its effect to send Carboneddon from the Deck to the Graveyard. Ostler activated Called by the Grave, banishing Brower’s Carboneddon before it could Special Summon a Normal Dragon from the Deck. At this point, Brower conceded and we’re going to a third Duel!
Duel 3
Brower elected to go first. He started with Danger!? Jackelope?’s effect with Ostler hitting Danger!? Tsuchinoko?. Danger!? Jackelope? was Special Summoned and Danger!? Tsuchinoko? was Special Summoned from the Graveyard. Both monsters were sent to the Graveyard to Link Summon PSY-Framelord Lambda. Brower then banished Danger!? Jackelope? from the Graveyard to Special Summon White Dragon Wyverbuster. Brower activated Quick Launch but Ostler chained Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring to negate it. White Dragon Wyverbuster turned into Guardragon Elpy, then White Dragon Wyverbuster’s Graveyard effect added Black Dragon Collapserpent from Brower’s Deck to his hand. White Dragon Wyverbuster was banished from the Graveyard to Special Summon Black Dragon Collapserpent which turned into a Guardragon Pisty. Guardragon Elpy’s effect Special Summoned Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon form Brower’s hand. Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon and PSY-Framelord Lambda were sent to the Graveyard to Link Summon Guardragon Agarpain. Agarpain’s effect Special Summoned Hot Red Dragon Archfiend Abyss from the Extra Deck. Agarpain and Guardragon Elpy were used to Link Summon Hieratic Seal of Heavenly Spheres.
Ostler drew Mare Mare. Ostler Special Summoned Tenyi Spirit – Nahata, then activated Flawless Perfection of the Tenyi. Tenyi Spirit – Nahata turned into Monk of the Tenyi. Next, Ostler activated Vessel of the Dragon Cycle which Brower negated with Hot Red Dragon Archfiend Abyss’s effect. Ostler then Special Summoned Tenyi Spirit – Mapura from his hand. In the Battle Phase, Monk attacked Brower’s Hieratic Seal of Heavenly Spheres but Brower activated the Hieratic effect, Triubting it to try and bounce Ostler’s Monk, but the Field Spell made Monk unaffected by monster effects. Brower used the Hieratic Seal of Heavenly Spheres’s Graveyard effect to Special Summon Tempest, Dragon Ruler of Storms from the Deck. Ostler’s Field Spell let Ostler draw 2 cards. In Main Phase 2, Ostler sent both of his monsters to the Graveyard to Link Summon Shaman of the Tenyi, then used its effect, discarding Mare Mare to Special Summon Mare Mare from the Graveyard. He then used its effect 3 times. A Token turned into Linkuriboh, then a bunch of plays later, he ended with this field:
Brower drew for turn and Ostler used Abyss Dweller’s effect to stop Brower from activating Graveyard effects this turn. Brower Set a monster, then in the Battle Phase, Hot Red Dragon Archfiend Abyss attacked over Ostler’s Abyss Dweller putting Ostler at 7000 to Brower’s 8000 LP.
Ostler drew Fists. He banished Tenyi Spirit – Vishuda to put Hot Red Dragon Archfiend Abyss back into Brower’s Extra Deck. Shaman of the Tenyi’s effect was next, discarded Fists of the Unrivaled Tenyi to bring back Mare Mare whose effect was used 3 times once again. He Synchro Summoned Hi-Speedroid Chanbara using Mare Mare and a Mini Mare Mare Token. He then went to the Battle Phase and attacked with Beserker of the Tenyi into Guardragon Pisty. At this point, Brower conceded, but I asked Ostler to show me what the Battle Phase would look like. Shaman’s would effect trigger to destroy Brower’s Set monster, then in damage calculation, Tenyi Spirit – Nahata’s effect would put Guardragon Pisty’s ATK to zero. Shaman would attack directly, then Hi-Speedroid Chanbara would attack directly twice for the win! (He got the combo from the Strategy video from Konami which you can find here.)
Ostler started his tournament with a win thanks to the Tenyi!
