Finals Feature Match: David Mendoza vs. Clifton Land II
And it all comes down to this! David Mendoza from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania ended the Swiss rounds in 9th place and has a Deck with Danger! monsters and Danger! support cards like Danger! Zone and Danger! Response Team! along with Gizmek Orochi, the Serpentron Sky Slasher and Gren Maju Da Eiza, while his opponent, Clifton Land II from Kentucky entered the playoffs as the 2nd seed with Lunalight Orcust, a combo Deck capable of setting up Summon Limit backed by Knightmare Gryphon locking down Monster effects. The winner will take home an Ultra Rare version of the YCS Prize Card Duel Link Dragon, the Duel Dragon, but whatever happens here will certainly be one for the books! Either Lunalight Orcust will take its first YCS win in North America, or Gren Maju Da Eiza will take the win after taking second place at YCS Portland just a few weeks ago. For the final time this weekend, it’s time to Duel!
Duel 1
Mendoza won the roll and elected to go second. Land started by Normal Summoning Lunalight Kaleido Chick and using its effect to send Lunalight Yellow Martin from the Deck to the Graveyard. He then activated Lunalight Tiger and used its effect to Special Summon Lunalight Yellow Martin from the Graveyard. Both monsters went on top of each other to Xyz Summon Outer Entity Nyarla. He then activated Nyarla’s effect, discarding Danger!? Jackelope?. Danger!? Jackelope?’s effect let Land Special Summon Danger! Mothman! from the Deck. Outer Entity Nyarla’s other effect detached both materials to attach Danger!? Jackelope? form the Graveyard. Lunalight Yellow Martin’s Graveyard effect added Lunalight Serenade Dance from his Deck to his hand. Outer Entity Azathot went on top of Outer Entity Nyarla. Lunalight Yellow Martin came out of the Graveyard, bouncing Lunalight Tiger back to Land’s hand. Outer Entity Azathot and Lunalight Yellow Martin went into Knightmare Phoenix which went into Knightmare Mermaid which discarded Lunalight Serenade Dance to Summon Orcust Knightmare. Tiger came down next which brought back Lunalight Kaleido Chick which dumped another Lunalight Yellow Martin from Land’s Deck to the Graveyard. Lunalight Yellow Martin and Danger! Mothman! were stacked to Xyz Summon Raidraptor – Force Trix. Its effect detached a material to add Blackwing – Zephyros the Elite from his Deck to his hand. Lunalight Serenade Dance was banished form the Graveyard, discarding Blackwing – Zephyros the Elite and Special Summoning Lunalight Kaleido Chick form the Deck. Lunalight Kaleido Chick’s effect sent Lunalight Panther Dancer from the Extra Deck to the Graveyard. 3 monsters were sent to the Graveyard to Link Summon Curious the Lightsworn Dominion which sent Summon Limit from the Deck to the Graveyard, then in a new chain, Curious’s effect sent the next 3 cards to the Graveyard. Zephyros’s effect bounced Lunalight Tiger back to Land’s hand with him taking 400 damage, doing down to 7600. Curious and Zephyros turned into Knightmare Gryphon which discarded Luna Light Perfume to Set Summon Limit from the Graveyard and draw a card.
Land activated Orcust Knightmare from the Graveyard, banishing it to send Orcust Harp Horror, then Orcust Harp Horror Special Summoned Orcust Cymbal Skeleton form the Deck, then Knightmare Mermaid and Orcust Cymbal Skeleton went into Galatea, the Orcust Automaton. Galatea sent back a banished monster to Set Orcust Crescendo from the Deck. Tiger came down again, Special Summoning Lunalight Kaleido Chick from the Graveyard. Luna Light Perfume was banished form the Graveyard, discarding Allure of Darkness to add Lunalight Wolf from the Deck to his hand. Lunalight Kaleido Chick and Galatea turned into Longirsu, the Orcust Orchestrator. Galatea came back from Orcust Cymbal Skeleton then Dingirsu, the Orcust of the Evening Star went over Longirsu, the Orcust Orchestrator.
Land Set Danger! Response Team!, then activated Danger! Ogopogo!. Danger!? Tsuchinoko? was discarded and Ogopogo came to the field with Mendoza drawing Card Destruction. Danger!? Tsuchinoko? came out of the Graveyard and Land activated Summon Limit in response. Mendoza then flipped the Set Danger! Response Team! He tried to bounce his own Danger!? Tsuchinoko? and Dingirsu, the Orcust of the Evening Star but Land chained Orcust Crescendo to negate it. Card Destruction was next, Mendoza discarding 3 and Land discarding 2. Mendoza activated Danger! Nessie! and Danger! Bigfoot!, with Danger! Bigfoot! trying to destroy Summon Limit but Land using Dingirsu, the Orcust of the Evening Star to protect Summon Limit from destruction. Danger! Nessie!’s effect added Danger! Response Team! from his Deck to his hand.
Land sent Dingirsu, the Orcust of the Evening Star Galatea, the Orcust Automaton and Knightmare Gryphon to Link Summon Borrelsword Dragon. Mendoza activated Fantastical Dragon Phantazmay, drawing 2 and putting 1 back. Orcust Cymbal Skeleton’s effect brought back Dingirsu, the Orcust of the Evening Star which sent Mendoza’s Fantastical Dragon Phantazmay to the Graveyard. Borrelsword Dragon attacked Danger!? Tsuchinoko?, then Dingirsu, the Orcust of the Evening Star attacked over Ogopogo. Borrelsword Dragon’s attack switched Dingirsu, the Orcust of the Evening Star to Defense and tried to attack for game but Mendoza activated Gizmek Orochi, the Serpentron Sky Slasher from his hand, banishing 8 from the top of his Deck to Special Summon Gizmek in Defense Position and block the attack. Gizmek Orochi, the Serpentron Sky Slasher was destroyed in battle but it kept Mendoza in the game.
Mendoza activated Super Polymerization, discarding Danger!? Jackelope?, using both of Land’s monsters to Fusion Summon Starving Venom Fusion Dragon. He then Normal Summoned Gren Maju Da Eiza. Both monsters attacked directly, leaving Land at 1200 LP to Mendoza’s 3600 LP. In the End Phase, Land banished Orcust Crescendo from his Graveyard to add World Legacy – “World Wand” from his Deck to his hand.
Land activated Foolish Burial Goods, sending Luna Light Perfume from his Deck to the Graveyard. He banished it form the Graveyard, discarding World Legacy – “World Wand” to add Lunalight Emerald Bird from his Deck to his hand. He activated Danger! Nessie!, with Mendoza hitting Lunalight Emerald Bird. Danger! Nessie! came out and Land drew a card. Lunalight Emerald Bird’s effect Special Summoned Lunalight Yellow Martin from the Graveyard. He then activated Fire Formation – Tenki, adding Lunalight Tiger from his Deck to his hand. He Set a monster and passed. In the End Phase, Mendoza Special Summoned Gizmek Orochi, the Serpentron Sky Slasher from the Graveyard, adding another 8 face-down cards from the top of his Deck to his banished pile, giving Gren Maju even more ATK.
Mendoza used Gizmek Orochi, the Serpentron Sky Slasher’s other effect to destroy Land’s Danger! Nessie!. Gren Maju attacked over the Set Lunalight Tiger whose Graveyard effect Special Summoned Lunalight Emerald Bird form the Graveyard. Starving Venom Fusion Dragon and Gizmek Orochi, the Serpentron Sky Slasher attacked over the other monsters. In Main Phase 2, Starving Venom Fusion Dragon and Gizmek Orochi, the Serpentron Sky Slasher turned into Number 68: Sanaphond the Sky Prison. He used the Xyz Monster’s effect, detaching Gizmek Orochi, the Serpentron Sky Slasher. He Set Danger! Response Team and passed.

Duel 2
Land elected to go first. He started with Armageddon Knight whose effect sent Lunalight Yellow Martin from the Deck to the Graveyard. Its effect added Lunalight Serenade Dance from the Deck to the hand. Danger!? Tsuchinoko? was next, and Mendoza hit World Legacy – “World Wand”. Danger!? Tsuchinoko? came out from the hand and Land drew a card. Both monsters went to the Graveyard to Link Summon Knightmare Phoenix. It went straight into Knightmare Mermaid whose effect let Land discard Lunalight Serenade Dance to Special Summon Orcust Knightmare form the Deck. Lunalight Serenade Dance was banished, letting Land discard Lunalight Kaleido Chick to Special Summon Lunalight Tiger from the Deck. Yellow Martin’s Graveyard was next, with the on-field Tiger bouncing back to the hand, Special Summoning Lunalight Yellow Martin form the Graveyard. Tiger was activated again, and its effect Special Summoned Lunalight Kaleido Chick form the Graveyard. Lunalight Kaleido Chick’s effect copied Lunalight Panther Dancer’s name by sending Panther Dancer from the Extra Deck to the Graveyard. Lunalight Kaleido Chick and Lunalight Yellow Martin were stacked to Xyz Summon Raidraptor – Force Trix. Force Trix’s effect let Land add Blackwing – Zephyros the Elite from his Deck to his hand. Land activated Danger!? Jackelope? and it hit the Graveyard and its Graveyard effect Summoned Danger! Nessie! from the Deck. Three monsters turned into Curious the Lightsworn Dominion which sent Summon Limit from the Deck to the Graveyard which sent 3 more cards to the Graveyard after that. Orcust Knightmare was banished form the Graveyard to send Orcust Harp Horror from the Deck to the Graveyard which was banished to Special Summon Orcust Cymbal Skeleton from the Deck. Knightmare Mermaid and Orcust Cymbal Skeleton turned into a Galatea, the Orcust Automaton. Galatea’s effect put a banished Orcust Harp Horror back into the Deck to Set Orcust Crescendo from the Deck. World Legacy – “World Wand” was banished from the Graveyard to Special Summon a banished Orcust Knightmare. Galatea and Orcust Knightmare were used to Link Summon Longirsu, the Orcust Orchestrator. Next, Orcust Cymbal Skeleton Special Summoned Galatea form the Graveyard, then Dingirsu, the Orcust of the Evening Star was Summoned on top of Galatea. Its effect attached a banished Orcust.
Mendoza drew Pot of Desires. He activated it, banishing the top 10 cards to draw 2 more. (Among his banished cards were 2 copies of Gizmek Orochi, the Serpentron Sky Slasher.) He Set 2 copies Danger! Zone and Shared Ride before passing.
Land activate Foolish Burial Goods sending Luna Light Perfume from the Deck to the Graveyard. Luna Light Perfume was banished form the Graveyard, discarding Lunalight Yellow Martin to add a Lunalight and Mendoza chained Shared Ride! Land added Lunalight Wolf from his Deck to his hand. Land Normal Summoned Blackwing – Zephyros the Elite and attacked with the Blackwing and Mendoza activated Danger! Zone! Land chained Orcust Crescendo, hoping to negate this apparent last ditch effort and end the Duel. Mendoza took the 1600, and Land attacked with Curious, Mendoza activated the second Danger! Zone, drawing 3 and discarding Danger! Ogopogo and Danger! Chupacabra!. He used Danger! Chupacabra!’s effect on Ogopogo and Ogopgo’s effect dumped Danger! Bigfoot! form the Deck. With Ogopogo’s 3000 DEF, Land stopped the attack and went into Main Phase 2. Tiger’s effect brought back Lunalight Kaleido Chick from the Graveyard. In the End Phase, Lunalight Kaleido Chick was destroyed.
Mendoza had 17 cards left in his Deck. He activated the second Pot of Desires, banishing another 10 to draw 2 more. He now had 5 left in the Deck. Mendoza activated Super Polymerization, discarding Danger!? Tsuchinoko? and fusing Land’s Dingirsu, the Orcust of the Evening Star and Longirsu, the Orcust Orchestrator to Summon Starving Venom Fusion Dragon. Mendoza brought the discarded Danger!? Tsuchinoko? back to the field. He then activated Danger! Bigfoot!’s effect in his hand, with Land hitting another Super Polymerization. He Summoned Danger! Bigfoot! and topdecked Gren Maju Da Eiza! He Normal Summoned Gren Maju Da Eiza! Land extended the handshake!
