Deck Profile: Corbin Diez’s Valkyrie Deck!

July 16th, 2022

Corbin Diez from Layton, Utah is a big fan of Zigfried von Schroeder and his Valkyrie cards, and decided to use them in this weekend’s prestigious North America Championship event. Diez’s Deck ultimately aims to win by resolving Ride of the Valkyries and defeating his opponent with his Valkyrie monsters combined with Mischief of the Time Goddess. Diez uses Mystic Mine to help prolong the Duel until he can use Ride of The Valkyries effectively, and plays lots of cards that support it. Take a look at some of the cards and strategies in Diez’s Deck, and read on to learn about an even bigger Zigfried fan at the convention center this weekend!

If Diez can’t take a quick win, he depends on Mystic Mine to prolong the Duel. He uses Terraforming and Metaverse to help him add Mystic Mine to his hand, and even uses Top Share to help get Terraforming. Once he adds Terraforming to the top of his Deck, he can immediately add it to his hand with the effect of Valkyrie Vierte for immediate access to Mystic Mine. He can also send whichever card his opponent puts on top of his or her Deck to the Graveyard with the effect of Valkyrie Sechste. After prolonging the Duel and drawing the cards he needs, he uses Ride of the Valkyries to swarm the field with monsters, and then uses Mischief of the Time Goddess after battling with them to skip to a new Battle Phase in a new turn. This lets him attack with them again, defeating his opponent in two turns that feel like one.

Diez’s Goddess cards – Goddess Skuld’s Oracle, Goddess Verdande’s Guidance, and Goddess Urd’s Verdict – also play an interesting role in Diez’s Deck. He can use them to manipulate the cards on top of his opponent’s Deck and get rid of the cards that are capable of removing his Mystic Mine from the field. In addition, Oracle can search for Guidance and Guidance can search for Verdict while there’s a Valkyrie on the field. Plus, Verdict will protect his Valkyries from being targeted or destroyed by card effects. When he doesn’t draw the other Goddess cards, Diez likes to use Goddess Urd’s Verdict to banish face-down cards his opponent controls that he can easily predict. He find this easiest to do against Branded Despia Decks.

Diez also uses Diviner of the Herald in his Deck, but uses it differently than most Duelists. He uses its effect to send Trias Hierarchia from his Main Deck to his Graveyard, and then Special Summons Trias Hierarchia from his Graveyard by Tributing his Diviner. Since his Diviner is Tributed, it’s effect activates to Special Summon a Level 2 or lower Fairy from his Deck, allowing him to Special Summon Valkyrie Sechste. Special Summoning Valkyrie Sechste triggers its effect so that he can Special Summon any Valkyrie monster in his Deck to join it!

One of the coolest combos in Diez’s Deck involves Dark Ruler No More and Mischief of the Time Goddess. He can use Dark Ruler No More to negate the effects of his opponent’s monsters, causing himself to suffer the drawback of not being able to inflict damage to his opponent for the rest of that turn. But by using Mischief of the Time Goddess to skip to the Battle Phase of his following turn, he’s then immediately able to inflict Battle Damage to his opponent without his opponent getting a turn.

Corbin Diez is a big Zigfried fan, and that’s why he chose to use his Valkyrie Deck in the tournament this weekend. But he was thrilled to meet an even bigger Zigfried fan this weekend – Oliver Wyman! Oliver Wyman is one of the special guests this weekend, and he voices Zigfried von Schroeder in the original animated Yu-Gi-Oh! series. Diez didn’t mind him crashing his Deck Profile photo.

Corbin Diez’s Deck is a fun one to use, especially for fans of Zigfried and his Valkyries. Diez lost his Round 1 Feature Match with this Deck, but had many victories with it before the tournament began. Try it out to defeat your opponents in style with Ride of the Valkyries!
