Deck Update: Darkwing Blast!
Prior to the release of Darkwing Blast, two of the most powerful strategies that Duelists used involved the Tearlaments cards and Spright cards. Darkwing Blast further strengthened these strategies by giving them new support. Check out the Tearlaments and Spright cards in Darkwing Blast that have allowed Duelists to bring their Tearlaments and Spright Decks to the next level!
1.) Tearlaments
Tearlaments Duelists got a bunch of new Tearlaments cards to use from Darkwing Blast, but Tearlaments Rulkallos is likely one of the most impactful. Rulkallos is a Level 8 Fusion Monster that can be Summoned by fusing Tearlaments Kitkallos with another Tearlaments monster. It has 3000 ATK and an effect that makes it so that your other Aqua monsters can’t be destroyed by battle. Plus, Rulkallos has two other effects that can each be used once per turn. The first effect lets you negate the activation of an opponent’s card or effect that Special Summons a monster, destroy that card, and then send a Tearlaments card from your hand or face-up on your field to the Graveyard. The second effect lets you Special Summon Rulkallos from your Graveyard if it’s sent to your Graveyard by a card effect after being Fusion Summoned. Negating the activation of an opponent’s card that Special Summons a monster can impede your opponent’s ability to advance the strength of their field. Plus, if you send Rulkallos to your Graveyard after using that effect, you’ll then be able to use Rulkallos’s other effect to Special Summon it back to the field.
In addition, Tearlaments received three new Spell Cards in Darkwing Blast: Tearlaments Scream, Tearlaments Heartbeat, and Tearlaments Grief. All three of these cards can add Tearlaments Trap Cards to the hand if they’re sent to the Graveyard, plus they have their own unique effects to help throughout the course of a Duel. These new cards allow Tearlaments Duelists to build their Decks to be more focused on the activation of Spell and Trap Cards.
2.) Spright
Spright Duelists may have lost access to Ronintoadin in the most recent Forbidden & Limited List, but thanks to the release of Spright Sprind in Darkwing Blast, they’re easily able to adjust their Decks. Spright Sprind is a Link-2 monster that you can Summon by using 2 monsters including a Level/Rank/Link 2 monster as a Link Material. If it’s Link Summoned, you can send a Level 2 monster from your Deck to your Graveyard. Although Tearlaments Duelists sometimes use this effect to send Tearlaments Merrli to the Graveyard, Spright Sprind is even stronger in Spright Decks since it can send Nimble Angler to the Graveyard. If Nimble Angler is sent to the Graveyard, its effect can Special Summon two Nimble monsters from the Deck, including two Level 2 Nimble Beavers. You can overlay one of those Beavers with Spright Sprind to Xyz Summon Gigantic Spright, and from there, there are lots of possibilities. You can set up a field with Spright Elf and Toadally Awesome by Special Summoning Swap Frog, or you can Special Summon Spright Blue to continue flooding the field with monsters. Spright Sprind also has an effect that can return monsters to the hand, which can occasionally come in handy.
In addition to Spright Sprind, Darkwing Blast also introduced a second new Spright card to the Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME – Spright Double Cross! This powerful Trap Card targets a monster on the field or in either Graveyard, and then has three powerful effects from which to choose. The first effect attaches the targeted monster to a Rank 2 monster you control as an Xyz Material. The second effect permanently takes control of that monster in a zone that a Link-2 monster you control points to. The third effect Special Summons the targeted monster from the Graveyard to a zone that a Link-2 monster you control points to. Permanently taking control of an opponent’s monster is probably the most powerful of the three effects, but all three of the effects are useful, and the versatility of the card is part of what makes it so powerful. Plus, Spright Double Cross is searchable by the effect of Spright Jet, allowing Spright Duelists to access it when they need it.
Tearlaments and Spright Decks are two of the most successful Decks so far this weekend, and that’s partially due to the power of the new cards that support the two themes in Darkwing Blast. Follow the coverage to see which of the new cards make it to the very top of the tournament!
