New Themes in Crossover Breakers!

December 7th, 2024

Crossover Breakers is the newest set introduced to the Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME, and it’s sure to make a big splash here at YCS Anaheim! The latest set introduces three brand-new archetypes to the game, each of which will be looking to make their mark on their debut weekend. Here’s a brief overview of what each the new archetypes – Ryzeal, Malice, and Ryu-Ge – can do!

Ryzeal

Ryzeal is perhaps the most highly anticipated archetype to make its debut in Crossover Breakers! The Ryzeal theme is made up of several Level 4 and Rank 4 monsters. The strategy of the Deck is to swarm the field with monsters to conduct Xyz Summons. Ext Ryzeal, Ice Ryzeal, Node Ryzeal, Sword Ryzeal, and Palm Ryzeal all have unique Summoning conditions that allow you to Special Summon from the hand. In addition, they all have effects that allow you to take other Ryzeal monsters from your Deck and add them to your hand, Summon them to your side of the field, or send them to your Graveyard!

The Ryzeal theme also contains two powerful new Xyz Monsters! Ryzeal Duo Drive is a key card for Duelists using the Ryzeal strategy to pull ahead in a Duel. It requires two or more Level 4 monsters to make, but allows you to detach 2 materials from any Xyz Monster that you control, and then add 2 “Ryzeal” cards with different names from your Deck to your hand. This helps you to further extend your plays by accessing additional monsters, or get other powerful cards from the theme, such as Ryzeal Plugin or Ryzeal Cross! Ryzeal Detonator is the other Xyz Monster, and can be summoned using 2 or more “Ryzeal” monsters. Whenever your opponent activates a card or effect, you can detach a material from Detonator to destroy a card on the field. The best part is, this effect isn’t limited to being used only once per turn! On its Summon, Ryzeal Detonator lets you attach a monster from your Graveyard to it as material, allowing it to potentially destroy an additional card. Finally, if your Xyz Monster – including the Ryzeal Detonator – would be destroyed by battle or card effect, you can detach a material from Detonator instead! These two Xyz Monsters are some of the strongest cards in the new set, and players competing this weekend are sure to see these cards throughout the event.

Maliss

The Maliss cards are an archetype consisting of DARK Cyberse monsters. However, they have a bit of a twist to them – whereas most Decks revolving around DARK monsters typically want to send their monsters to the Graveyard, the Maliss monsters actually want to be banished! When any of the Maliss monsters are banished, you’re able to pay a small amount of Life Points to Special Summon that monster back to your side of the field. Cards that are already popular on the competitive scene, such as Dimension Shifter, Allure of Darkness, and Bystial Magnamhut, naturally pair well with this archetype, setting the theme up to do well in the current Advanced Format.

One unique aspect of the Maliss strategy is the Trap Cards that the Deck uses. Maliss <C> GWC-06, Maliss <C> MTP-07, and Maliss <C> TB-11 all can be activated the turn in which they are Set by banishing a face-up Maliss monster on your side of the field! This has the potential to create some interesting mind games between players. The Trap Cards can be activated in response to Effect Veiler or Infinite Impermanence, allowing your Maliss monsters to still resolve their effects and dodge the effect negation. However, some players will simply Set other Spell or Trap Cards, in an attempt to bluff the opponent and try to discourage them from attempting to negate the Maliss monsters’ effects. The Trap Cards also allow you to get additional Maliss monsters onto your side of the field, setting up the ability to flood the field with powerful Link Monsters, including Accesscode Talker and Firewall Dragon Darkfluid – Neo Tempest Terahertz!

Ryu-Ge

The Ryu-Ge cards may not have caught as much attention from players as Ryzeal and Maliss, but don’t let that fool you into thinking that the cards aren’t incredibly strong! Ryu-Ge are a theme revolving around Level 10 monsters of different types and attributes, and this diversity allows them to successfully combine with several other popular archetypes, including Dinosaurs, Swordsoul, and Dinomorphia.

One notable card that the deck makes use of is Varudras, the Final Bringer of the End Times! Varudras is a Rank 10 Xyz Monster that is able to negate your opponent’s activated card or effect, making it a powerful card to set up on your side of the field going first. However, true to its name, it has several effects that allow you to destroy cards on the field, which could help players push through big field with the card as well.

Overall, the themes from Crossover Breakers are all sure to make a huge splash here this weekend at YCS Anaheim! Which of these strategies will make their way to the top of the competition? Stay tuned to find out!
