3 vs. 3 Ultimate Time Wizard Feature Match: Matt Kolenda vs. Robin Sharman

March 16th, 2025

The 3 vs. 3 Ultimate Time Wizard Tournament has reached the final Match! This event pits teams of Duelists against each other in multiple eras of classic Dueling – April 2005, April 2010, and September 2011. From Team Robert Joseph Scarpelli, we have Rick Novak, Chris Pierczynski, and Matt Kolenda playing the 2005, 2010, and 2011 formats, respectively. They’re facing Team ANIME SUCKS’s Thomas Sensing, Cameren Kawamoto, and Robin Sharman. Since Reborn Tengu is featured on the newest Time Wizard Tournament Game Mats, and it’s such a huge part of the 2011 format, so we’ve got Kolenda and Sharman in the Feature Match seat for you today.

Duel 1

Kolenda had Maxx “C”, Sangan, Dandylion, Spore, and Monster Reborn. Sharman won the dice roll, and started with Thunder King Rai-Oh. He Set a back row card to go with it.

Kolenda drew Lonefire Blossom. He Set Dandylion and passed.

Sharman played One for One, discarding Dandylion! Kolenda activated Maxx “C”! Sharman Special Summoned Spore and two Fluff Tokens, and Kolenda got to draw Trap Dustshoot and Reborn Tengu. Sharman sent Rai-Oh to destroy Kolenda’s Set Dandylion, and Kolenda got two Fluff Tokens of his own.

Kolenda drew Debris Dragon. He Normal Summoned Spore, and Sharman flipped Enemy Controller! He Tributed his own Spore to temporarily gain control of Kolenda’s Spore, preventing a Synchro Monster from hitting the field. Kolenda simply played Monster Reborn, stealing Sharman’s Spore in return! He tuned it to a Fluff Token for Formula Synchron, and Sharman Tributed Rai-Oh to negate the summon. Kolenda Set Trap Dustshoot. In the End Phase, Spore returned to Kolenda’s field.

In the Draw Phase, Dustshoot revealed Sharman’s hand of Reborn Tengu, Gorz the Emissary of Darkness, Effect Veiler, and Mind Control, shuffling Tengu back into the Deck. Sharman Special Summoned Spore by banishing Dandylion from the Graveyard. He tuned it to a Fluff Token for T.G. Hyper Librarian, then played Mind Control to take Kolenda’s Spore once again. He tuned Spore to the second Fluff Token for Formula Synchron. Formula and Librarian each let him draw a card. He Normal Summoned a new Rai-Oh. Rai-Oh destroyed Kolenda’s last Fluff Token, and Librarian attacked directly. Sharman Set a back row card.

Kolenda drew his own Mind Control! He Normal Summoned Reborn Tengu and lost it to Sharman’s Solemn Warning. He Set Mind Control as a bluff.

Sharman simply attacked with Rai-Oh and Librarian again, dropping Kolenda to just 1300 Life Points. Sharman still had 6000 Life Points.

Kolenda drew Tour Guide From the Underworld. He Normal Summoned Debris Dragon, but it was negated by Sharman’s Effect Veiler. Kolenda then flipped up Mind Control targeting Rai-Oh. Sharman Chained the effect of Formula Synchron, using it and Rai-Oh to Synchro Summon Orient Dragon. That let Sharman also draw a card with T.G. Hyper Librarian. Kolenda’s hand full of monsters couldn’t help him out of this, and he conceded the first Duel.

Duel 2

Kolenda began this time with two copies of Tour Guide From the Underworld, Mind Control, Enemy Controller, One for One, and Sangan. He Set Sangan and Enemy Controller.

Sharman made the same play as last game, One for One sending Dandylion to the Graveyard! He Special Summoned Spore and two Fluff Tokens. Kolenda flipped Enemy Controller, Tributing Sangan to steal Spore. Sangan then put Maxx “C” in Kolenda’s hand. Sharman Set a card in his back row. He Normal Summoned his own Sangan and attacked the pilfered Spore, getting it into his Graveyard for later.

Kolenda drew Reborn Tengu. He Normal Summoned Tour Guide, and it was hit by Sharman’s Solemn Warning. Kolenda passed.

Sharman banished Dandylion for Spore’s effect, and Kolenda Chained Maxx “C” to draw a second Maxx “C”. Spore and Sangan attacked directly. Sharman then used all his monsters to Synchro Summon Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier! Kolenda drew Mystical Space Typhoon. Then, Trishula banished Maxx “C” from Kolenda’s Graveyard and randomly got Tour Guide from the hand.

Kolenda drew Call of the Haunted. He Set Call and Tengu.

Sharman predicted Kolenda’s monster by preemptively activating Maxx “C”, then attacked the Set Tengu. Kolenda Special Summoned a new Tengu, and Sharman drew a card.

Kolenda drew Monster Reborn. He played it on Sharman’s Spore, and Sharman had another Maxx “C” to draw a card. Kolenda passed. At this moment, Kolenda’s team mate Rick Novak won his Match in the 2005 side of things.

Sharman Normal Summoned Tour Guide, and Kolenda used his Maxx “C” to draw Trap Dustshoot when the Tour Guide brought another Tour Guide to the field. The Tour Guides attacked Spore and Tengu, and Tengu brought the final Tengu to the field. Trishula destroyed that one too. Sharman Set a back row card.

Kolenda drew Solemn Judgment. He started with Mystical Space Typhoon on Sharman’s Set Enemy Controller. Then he flipped Call of the Haunted to revive Sangan. He sent it to attack Sharman’s first Tour Guide, destroying both monsters while putting Dandylion in Kolenda’s hand. He then played One for One, discarding Dandylion. He Special Summoned Spore and two Fluff Tokens. He tuned Spore to a Fluff Token for Formula Synchron, but Sharman hit it with Effect Veiler. Kolenda banished Dandylion to Special Summon Spore, tuning it to the last Fluff Token for Ally of Justice Catastor. He Set Judgment and Dustshoot to finish.

Dustshoot was flipped immediately, shuffling Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning into the Deck. Sharman also had Caius the Shadow Monarch, Dark Hole, and Pot of Avarice. Sharman Tributed Tour Guide to play Caius, targeting Catastor. Kolenda Chained Formula, tuning it to Catastor for a Defense Position Ancient Fairy Dragon. Sharman played Pot of Avarice, and Kolenda didn’t hesitate to activate Solemn Judgment.

Kolenda drew Enemy Controller, with Mind Control as his only other card in hand. He Set Enemy Controller.

Sharman passed, unable to defeat Ancient Fairy Dragon.

Kolenda drew Gorz the Emissary of Darkness and passed.

Sharman consulted with his team mate, and passed.

Kolenda drew Rai-Oh and passed again.

Sharman played Enemy Controller, Tributing Caius to steal Ancient Fairy Dragon. He turned it to Attack Position and attacked directly, but his Trishula was hit by Kolenda’s Enemy Controller. Ancient Fairy dropped Kolenda to 1200 Life Points, and Kolenda dropped Gorz. Sharman played the Dark Hole he’d been holding, wiping out everything.

Kolenda drew another Rai-Oh. He Normal Summoned it and passed without attacking, fearing a Gorz on the other side.

Sharman used Book of Moon to flip Rai-Oh face-down, then Special Summoned Cyber Dragon! He Normal Summoned Rai-Oh, and that was enough to take this Match!

The score was even between the teams, so it all came down to Pierczynski and Kawamoto playing the 2010 format.

Pierczynski had a Des Frog, Substitoad, and an XX-Saber Fulhelmknight stolen by Brain Control. Kawamoto had just one Set monster. Pierczynski used Foolish Burial to put Fishborg Blaster in the Graveyard, and revived it by discarding a card. He tuned it to Des Frog for Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier! Then he used Substitoad to Tribute Fullhelmknight and get a Swap Frog, sending another Substitoad to the Graveyard. Substitoad let him Tribute Swap to get another Des Frog, and activated Salvage to return Swap and Substitoad to his hand! That gave him the fodder to Special Summon Fishborg Blaster even more! He tuned it to Des Frog for Goyo Guardian! Then he brought it back again, and Substitoad brought a third Des Frog to the field! Brionac cleared away Kawamoto’s Set monster, and the Frog and friends attacked directly to win the Match for Team Robert Joseph Scarpelli!
