NAWCQ Round 2 Feature Match: Stephen Neil Muldoon Marquez vs. Michael Louis Volpe
It’s Round 2 here at the North America WCQ! These two Duelists each won their respective first rounds, but they’ll need to keep winning if they want to make it to Day 2 for a chance to earn their invitation to the 2026 World Championship in Japan. For this Feature Match, we have Stephen Neil Muldoon Marquez, playing the Fiendsmith Yummy Mitsurugi Deck, and Michael Louis Volpe, playing the Kewl Tune Deck. Which of these Duelists will improve to 2-0? Let’s find out! It’s time to Duel!
Duel 1
Marquez won the die roll and chose to go first! He started by activating Fiendsmith’s Tract, searching for and discarding Fabled Lurrie. He used Lurrie to Link Summon Fiendsmith’s Requiem, then activated Requiem’s effect to Special Summon Fiendsmith Engraver from the Deck. Next, he activated Pre-Preparation of Rites, searching for Ame no Habakiri no Mitsurugi and Mitsurugi Mirror! He used Habakiri’s effect to Special Summon and Tribute Mitsurugi no Mikoto, Saji, then searched for Mitsurugi Ritual. He activated Ritual, Special Summoning Habakiri by Tributing Mitsurugi no Mikoto, Aramasa and Mitsurugi no Mikoto, Kusanagi from the Deck. He searched for Futsu no Mitama no Mitsurugi and added Mitsurugi Ritual back to hand, then used Habakiri and Engraver to Link Summon Fiendsmith’s Sequence! He activated Sequence’s effect, and here, Volpe Chained the effect of Fydraulis Harmonia, Special Summoning it, destroying Sequence, and sending Golden Cloud Beast – Malong to the Graveyard. Marquez Special Summoned Aerial Eater, and in the following Chain, used Aerial Eater’s effect to send another Engraver to the Graveyard, as Volpe used Malong’s effect to return Aerial Eater to the Extra Deck.

Marquez activated Mitsurugi Ritual once again, Tributing Futsu no Mitama no Mitsurugi from his hand to Ritual Summon Ame no Murakumo no Mitsurugi from his Deck! He used Murakumo’s effect to destroy Volpe’s Harmonia, then searched for Mitsurugi Prayers. He then Normal Summoned Lacrima the Crimson Tears, and used Lacrima and Murakumo to Link Summon Sky Striker Ace – Camellia and send Sky Striker Mobilize – Engage! To the Graveyard. He used Camellia to Link Summon Sky Striker Ace – Kagari and add Sky Striker Mobilize – Engage! Back to hand, then activated Engage to search for Sky Striker Mecha – Hornet Drones and draw a card. He activated Hornet Drones, then used Kagari and the Sky Striker Ace Token to Link Summon Cupsy☆Yummy Way. He used Cupsy☆Yummy Way’s effect to search for Marshmao☆Yummy and Cupsy☆Yummy and discarded Ragged Records of Rites, then Special Summoned Cupsy☆Yummy and searched for Yummy☆Surprise! He used Cupsy☆Yummy Way to Link Summon Yummy☆Snatchy and place Yummyusment☆Mignon to his side of the field, then Special Summoned Marshmao☆Yummy. He used Marshmao and Snatchy to Synchro Summon Lollipo☆Yummy Way and bring back Marshmao and Snatchy from the Graveyard, then activated Mitsurugi Prayers, Special Summoning Ame no Murakumo no Mitsurugi from the Graveyard. He activated Mitsurugi Mirror, Tributing Murakumo to Special Summon Futsu, then used the effect of the Tributed Murakumo to search for Mitsurugi Great Purification! Finally, Marquez used Marshmao and Snatchy to Link Summon Cross-Sheep and Cupsy to Link Summon Linkuriboh, then activated Cross-Sheep’s effect to draw and discard two cards. He Set three cards to his backrow, then ended his turn.
Volpe opened with Kewl Tune Synchro, The Fallen & The Virtuous, Kewl Tune Cue, and Kewl Tune Clip, then drew Called by the Grave for turn! He started by Normal Summoning Kewl Tune Cue and activating its effect; Marquez Chained Ghost Belle & Haunted Mansion, Volpe Chained Called by the Grave, Marquez followed up with Mitsurugi Great Purification, Volpe Chained Kewl Tune Synchro, and Marquez used Lollipo☆Yummy Way to bring back both Cupsy☆Yummy and Yummy☆Snatchy! Volpe searched for Kewl Tune Rotary, then used Rotary and Cue to Synchro Summon Kewl Tune Track Maker as Marquez Special Summoned Futsu. Marquez activated the effect of Snatchy, and Volpe activated The Fallen & The Virtuous to try and destroy Snatchy, but Marquez activated Yummy☆Surprise, returning multiple cards on the field back to their respective hands! When resolving the entire Chain, Volpe used Rotary’s effect to return Ame no Murakumo no Mitsurugi to the bottom of Marquez’s Deck, as well as Track Maker’s effect to search for JJ “Kewl Tune”. Volpe activated JJ and Normal Summoned Kewl Tune Clip, but when he activated its effect and Tributed Clip, he was met by Marquez’s Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring! Without any pushes left, Volpe conceded.

Duel 2
Volpe chose to go first in the second Duel, opening with Fydraulis Harmonia, Kewl Tune Mix, Kewl Tune Synchro, Kewl Tune Rotary, and Prohibition. He used the effect of Rotary, revealing Harmonia, then Normal Summoned Rotary. He used Rotary and Harmonia to Synchro Summon Visas Amritara, allowing him to look at Marquez’s hand and search for Mannadium Reframing and JJ “Kewl Tune”. He made note of Ghost Belle & Haunted Mansion as the only potential card that could stop him from performing his combo! He activated JJ, then used its effect to Tribute Amritara, Special Summon Kewl Tune Reco, and add Rotary back to hand. He used Rotary and Reco to Synchro Summon Kewl Tune Track Maker and search for Kewl Tune Playlist. He Normal Summoned Kewl Tune Mix and searched for Kewl Tune Cue, then used Track Maker on the field and Cue from his hand to Synchro Summon Zalen the Shackled Dragon! He returned Mitsurugi no Mikoto, Kusanagi to the top of Marquez’s Deck, then activated Kewl Tune Synchro to search for Kewl Tune Cue. He used his final Normal Summon to bring out Kewl Tune Cue and Special Summon Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring from his Deck, then used Mix and Ash Blossom to Synchro Summon Kewl Tune Remix. Finally, he used Zalen and Cue to Synchro Summon Kewl Tune B2B, Set two cards to his backrow, and activated Prohibition, declaring Ghost Belle & Haunted Mansion, and ended his turn.

In the Draw Phase, Marquez activated Mitsurugi Prayers, and Volpe Chained the effect of Kewl Tune Remix! Volpe Special Summoned Reco and added Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring back to hand as Marquez searched for Ame no Habakiri no Mitsurugi. In the following Chain, Volpe activated the effect of Reco to search for Kewl Tune Clip. Marquez proceeded to Main Phase 1 and activated the effect of Fiendsmith Engraver, searching for Fiendsmith’s Tract, as Volpe used the effect of B2B to bring back Zalen the Shackled Dragon from the Graveyard. Marquez activated Tract, but Volpe activated the effect of Clip as Chain Link 2, then used Zalen as Chain Link 3 to negate and destroy the Tract! Volpe used Clip and Reco to Synchro Summon Kewl Tune RS. Next, Marquez activated the effect of Ame no Habakiri no Mitsurugi, Special Summoning and Tributing Mitsurugi no Mikoto, Saji as Volpe used B2B’s effect to add Kewl Tune Cue back to hand. Marquez activated the effect of the Tributed Saji, but Volpe Chained the effect of Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring! Finally, Marquez activated Sky Striker Mecha – Hornet Drones, Special Summoning a Sky Striker Ace Token, and Volpe activated Kewl Tune Playlist, adding Kewl Tune Mix back to hand and destroying the Token. Finally, Marquez activated Pre-Preparation of Rites, but Volpe Chained the effect of RS, and Marquez conceded.

Duel 3
Volpe opened with Mulcharmy Purulia, Ghost Belle & Haunted Mansion, Kewl Tune Rotary, and two copies of Effect Veiler.
Marquez chose to go first in the final Duel! He started in the Draw Phase, activating Mitsurugi Prayers, but was met by Volpe’s Ghost Belle & Haunted Mansion. In the Standby Phase, Volpe then activated the effect of Mulcharmy Purulia! Marquez activated the effect of Fiendsmith Engraver, searching for Fiendsmith’s Tract, used Tract to search for and discard Fabled Lurrie, then used Lurrie to Link Summon Fiendsmith’s Requiem! He used Requiem’s effect to Special Summon Lacrima the Crimson Tears from the Deck and send a second copy of Fiendsmith Engraver to the Graveyard. Marquez followed up by activating Pre-Preparation of Rites, searching for Ame no Habakiri no Mitsurugi and Mitsurugi Mirror! He activated the effect of Habakiri, Special Summoning and Tributing Mitsurugi no Mikoto, Saji to search for Mitsurugi Ritual, then activated Ritual, Tributing Habakiri from his hand to bring out Ame no Murakumo no Mitsurugi from the Deck! Marquez used the effect of the Tributed Habakiri to search for Mitsurugi Prayers, then activated Prayers, this time Tributing Kusanagi from hand; he searched for Futsu no Mitama no Mitsurugi and Special Summoned Kusanagi, then added Mitsurugi RItual back to hand. Marquez activated Mitsurugi Mirror, Tributing Murakumo from the field to Special Summon Habakiri from the Graveyard, then Special Summoned back Murakumo and searched for a third copy of Mitsurugi Prayers! He used Kusanagi and Lacrima to Link Summon Fiendsmith’s Sequence. He activated its effect, and Volpe Chained the effect of Murakumo; Volpe didn’t respond, but he discarded his second copy of Effect Veiler, allowing the first Effect Veiler to resolve its effect and negate the effect of Fiendsmith’s Sequence. Marquez adapted by Special Summoning Engraver from the Graveyard, then using Engraver and Sequence to Link Summon Cross-Sheep! Finally, he Set three cards to his backrow and ended his turn. Marquez completed his turn without allowing Volpe to draw any cards with the effect of Purulia!
Volpe drew Kewl Tune Reco for turn! He activated the effect of Rotary, revealing Reco in his hand, and Marquez Chained the effect of Murakumo. Volpe discarded the Rotary and Normal Summoned Reco, but it was met by Infinite Impermanence! Volpe wasn’t able to make any other plays, and conceded.

With the victory, Marquez improves to 2-0 here at the North America WCQ!
