Those remaining Duelists will compete in 5 more Swiss Rounds today before the tournament cuts to a single-elimination Top 8! Now, in our Round 9 Feature Match, Andrew Powelson from Kirkland, Washington is Dueling against Jeremi Guevarra from New York, NY! Powelson is using a Super Quant Deck. Guevarra is using a Blitzclique Deck made possible by the recent release of the Chaos Origins booster set. Both Duelists have 7-1 records, so they’ll need a bunch of wins in today’s Swiss Rounds in order to make it into the final cut. It’s time to Duel!

Duel One

Powelson opened up Duel 1 with Super Quantum Green Layer, Herald of the Green Light, Hecahands Godos, Mulcharmy Purulia, and Final Bringer of the End Times.

He Set the Herald of the Green Light and Set Final Bringer before ending his turn.

Guevarra activated Blitzclique – Breakaway in the Draw Phase and used its effect to place Blitzclique Alternator from his Deck face-up to his field. He then activated Pot of Extravagance at the start of Main Phase 1. He banished 6 random cards from his Extra Deck face-down and drew 2 cards. Next, he activated the effect of Grain Blitzclique targeting the face-down Final Bringer. Powelson Chained Final Bringer to destroy his own face-down Herald of the Green Light along with Alternator. Grain destroyed Final Bringer and Summoned itself to the field. Next, Guevarra activated Hideout in the Sky, Coulomb. He used its effect to give Powelson a Mech Beast Token in Attack Position and add Whisker Blitzclique from his Deck to his hand. Next, he banished Alternator from his Graveyard to add Blitzclique – Steppleader from his Deck to his hand. He activated it and then used its effect to Special Summon Surge Blitzclique from his hand and destroy the Steppleader. Powelson drew a card. He used the effects of Grain and Surge to add Breakaway and Crackle Blitzclique from his Deck to his hand. He entered his Battle Phase and then used the effect of Whisker Blitzclique to Special Summon Whisker and Crackle from his hand and then destroy the Mech Beast Token. Powelson drew another card from Purulia’s effect, but it was no help! Direct attacks from Crackle, Whisker, Surge, and Grain wiped out all 8000 of Powelson’s Life Points!

Duel 2

Powelson opened up Duel 2 with Herald of the Green Light, Unbreakable Xyz Barrier, Super Quantum Black Layer, Super Quantum Blue Layer, and Super Quantal Mech Ship Magnacarrier. He Normal Summoned Blue Layer from his hand and activated its effect to add Super Quantal Fairy Zetan from his Deck to his hand. Next, he activated Zetan’s effect in his hand to Special Summon it. He activated Zetan’s effect on the field. He Tributed it and sent Super Quantum White Layer from his Deck to his Graveyard to Special Summon Super Quantal Fairy Alphan from his Deck. He activated White Layer’s effect in the Graveyard to add another Alphan from his Deck to his hand. He Tributed the Alphan on the field to activate its effect and show Powelson Super Quantum Green Layer, Super Quantum Red Layer, and Super Quantum Black Layer from his Deck. He randomly Special Summoned the Black Layer and sent the other 2 monsters to the Graveyard. He activated the effects of Black Layer, Red Layer, and Green Layer. He resolved each of their effects. He discarded a Black Layer from his hand to draw Nibiru, the Primal Being, used Red Layer’s effect to Special Summon Green Layer, and then used Black Layer’s effect to Xyz Summon Super Quantal Mech Beast Lusterrex using the Black Layer as an Xyz Material, and he attached White Layer from his Graveyard to Lusterrex as an Xyz Material. He then activated the effect of the Black Layer in his Graveyard to add Layer 19 “Sudden Incursion! Super Quantum Black!!” from his Deck to his hand. He activated Magnacarrier and then used its effect by discarding Alphan. He Xyz Summoned Super Quantal Mech Beast Grampulse by using Blue Layer as an Xyz Material and then used Magnacarrier’s effect again. He discarded Herald of the Green Light to use Green Layer as an Xyz Material to Summon Super Quantal Mech Beast Aeroboros. Finally, he sent Magnacarrier to his Graveyard to combine all of the “Super Quant” monsters on his field and Xyz Summon Super Quantal Mech King Great Magnus with all of their Xyz Materials attached, for a total of 7 Xyz Materials! He Set 2 cards to his back row and then ended his turn.

Guevarra drew a card and conceded, realizing that he would be unable to defeat the Super Quantal Mech King Great Magnus.

The Match is going to a third and final Duel!

Duel Three

Guevarra started off Duel 3 by activating Breakaway in his Draw Phase and placing Blitzclique Alternator face-up in his Spell & Trap Zone.

At the start of Main Phase 1, he activated Pot of Extravagance. He banished 6 random cards from his Extra Deck face-down and drew 2 cards. Next, he activated Coulomb and used its effect to Special Summon a Token to Powelson’s field and add a Crackle from his Deck to his hand. Next, he activated Seventh Tachyon. He revealed Number 106: Giant Hand from his Extra Deck, added Surge Blitzclique from his Deck to his hand, and then placed a card from his hand on top of his Deck. He activated Surge’s effect to destroy the Token and Summon Surge, allowing Powelson to draw a card with Purulia’s effect. Guevarra used Breakaway’s effect in the Graveyard to return it to his hand. He Set 2 cards to his back row and then ended his turn.

Powelson drew Alphan and added it to his hand of Super Quantum White Layer, Super Quantum Red Layer, Super Quantum Black Layer, Layer 19, and Nibiru, the Primal Being. He activated the effect of White Layer by sending Black Layer from his hand to the Graveyard and Special Summoned the White Layer to his field. He then activated the effects of White Layer and Black Layer. He added Super Quantal Alphan Spike from his Deck to his hand with Black Layer’s effect and used White Layer’s effect to send a Red Layer from his Deck to his Graveyard. He used Red Layer’s effect to Special Summon Black Layer from his Graveyard. Next, he activated Layer 19 to try to Special Summon a monster from his Deck, and Guevarra Chained Breakaway. Breakaway returned Surge to Guevarra’s hand and destroyed Black Layer, and then Layer 19 resolved to Special Summon Blue Layer. Powelson activated Blue Layer’s effect, and then Guevarra Chained Crackle’s effect from his hand. Crackle destroyed the Blue Layer and Summoned itself to the field, and then Blue Layer’s effect resolved to add Super Quantal Fairy Zetan from Powelson’s Deck to his hand. He activated Zetan’s effect to try to Special Summon it, and Guevarra Chained Superconductive Plasma Blast to add Emi Blitzclique from his Deck to his hand. Zetan was Summoned to the field, and then Guevarra activated Emi’s effect in his hand, targeting Zetan, then Chained Alternator’s effect. He returned Emi to his Deck and grabbed Thunderclap Monk from his Deck to replace it. When Emi’s effect resolved, he Special Summoned the Monk and destroyed the Zetan. Powelson Tributed White Layer to Summon Red Layer to his hand next, and then activated the effects of his White Layer and Red Layer. He added Fairy Alphan from his Deck to his hand and returned Black Layer from his Graveyard to his hand. He entered his Battle Phase and attacked the Monk with Red Layer, not realizing that his monster was weakened by Alternator, and the Monk was boosted by Coulomb! Red Layer was destroyed in battle, and Powelson dropped down to 7000 Life Points! Powelson ended his turn with no other play.

Guevarra drew a card and then used Alternator’s effect to return Crackle from his hand to his Deck and add Emi to his hand. Then, he used Emi’s effect. He targeted and destroyed Alternator, Summoned Emi, and then used the effects of the Surge on his field and the Breakaway in his Graveyard. He returned Breakaway to his hand and added Grain Blitzclique from his Deck to his hand with Surge’s effect. He entered his Battle Phase, attacked directly with Emi, Monk, and Surge and then activated the effect of Whisker in his hand.  Powelson tried to use his Black Layer’s effect to Special Summon it from his hand, but Guevarra Tributed his Monk to negate the activation of Black Layer’s effect and destroy it. Next, Powelson activated the effect of the Black Layer in his Graveyard, but Guevarra used Whisker’s effect to negate the activation of the effect by returning Surge from his field to his hand. Finally, a direct attack from Whisker wiped out the remainder of Powelson’s Life Points!
