We’re approaching the end of today’s Genesys competition! Duelists will need a strong record to continue to Sunday’s portion of the tournament, and these two are on the bubble. From the Washington, D.C., area, we have Isaac Kritz with a Lyrilusc Mimighoul Deck! He’s facing Dani MacDonald, from Halifax, NS, attending her first YCS with Ice Barriers!

Duel 1

Kritz won the dice roll and played first. MacDonald had a hand of Ice Barrier; Abyssrhine, the Atlantean Spirit; Pair Bear Scare!!; Radiant Typhoon Vision; and Georgius, Swordsman of the Ice Barrier.

Kritz began his turn by activating Dimension Shifter! He then used Mimighoul Maker, revealing Mimighoul Slime and Mimighoul Archfiend, with Slime going to MacDonald’s field and Archfiend to his own field. Archfiend’s effect flipped up the Slime. That let Kritz Special Summon Mimighoul Dragon, and Slime went back to Kritz. Dragon let him add Mimighoul Dungeon to his hand. He used Archfiend and Slime to Xyz Summon Giant Mimighoul, which added Mimighoul Room to his hand. He activated the Dungeon, using it to add another Archfiend to his hand. He Special Summoned Archfiend to MacDonald’s field, then Special Summoned Mimighoul Flower to MacDonald’s field. He Special Summoned Treasure Panther and used it to flip up MacDonald’s Archfiend and Flower. That let Kritz draw a card, while MacDonald was forced to send Abyssrhine from her hand to the Graveyard, then Archfiend returned to Kritz. Flower let Kritz add another Dragon to his hand, and the Flower returned to Kritz as well. He stacked Flower and Treasure Panther for Lyrilusc – Recital Starling, using its effect to add D.D. Crow to his hand. He then used Recital Starling and Giant Mimighoul for Number F0: Utopic Future Zexal! He used his other Mimighouls to Xyz Summon Mimighoul Throne, which brought Mimighoul Master to the field, which in turn added Mimighoul Armor to his hand. He Normal Summoned Dragon, then Special Summoned Mimighoul Fairy to MacDonald’s field. He Special Summoned Armor, and stacked it with Dragon for Lyrilusc – Ensemblue Robin. He Set one back row card to finish the turn.

MacDonald drew Twin Twisters. Still in the Draw Phase, she played Vision to draw Warlock of the Ice Barrier and Medallion of the Ice Barrier, discarding Twin Twisters. She played Medallion next, adding Mirror Mage of the Ice Barrier to her hand. She Flip Summoned Mimighoul Fairy, invoking its negative effect and giving it to Kritz. Kritz now activated Mimighoul Room, handing over a Dragon. MacDonald played Pair Bear Scare!!, and Kritz revealed his own copy of the card, so both Duelists gained 2000 Life Points. She was locked out by Mimighoul Dungeon, Fairy, and Dimension Shifter, with no option but to simply Set Ice Barrier.

Kritz activated Throne’s effect, equipping it to Master and returning the Set Ice Barrier to the hand. He used Dungeon’s effect to add another Fairy to the hand. He Special Summoned Fairy, and stacked both copies of Fairy for Ripple Bird. Its effect flipped MacDonald’s Mimighoul Dragon face-up, and it returned to Kritz’s field. He Xyz Summoned Dragon Gate and used its effect to increase its ATK, then sent everything to end the first Duel!

Duel 2

MacDonald began this Duel with two copies of Mirror Mage of the Ice Barrier, two copies of Revealer of the Ice Barrier, and Icejade Ran Aegirine.

She led with Aegirine, sending Mirror Mage to the Graveyard to Special Summon Aegirine and Special Summon an Icejade Token. Mirror Mage’s effect added Winds Over the Ice Barrier to her hand. She used both of her monsters to Synchro Summon Lancea, Ancestral Dragon of the Ice Mountain. She Normal Summoned Revealer, discarding the second Revealer to Special Summon Georgius, Swordsman of the Ice Barrier. Georgius’s effect brought Mirror Mage to the field. Mirror Mage’s effect Tributed Revealer to Special Summon two Ice Barrier Tokens. She used Winds, Tributing the Tokens to Special Summon Speaker of the Ice Barrier and Spellbreaker of the Ice Barrier. She used Georgius and Speaker to Synchro Summon Icejade Gymir Aegirine. She used Spellbreaker’s effect by banishing Revealer from the Graveyard.

Kritz Normal Summoned Mimighoul Master, and MacDonald responded with Icejade Gymir Aegirine’s effect to banish the Master. Master’s effect added Mimighoul Dragon to his hand. Kritz Special Summoned Dragon face-down on MacDonald’s field, then Special Summoned Flower and Slime. He Xyz Summoned Ripple Bird. Ripple Bird’s effect flipped up Mimighoul Dragon, which destroyed all of MacDonald’s monsters! The Dragon returned to Kritz’s field. To make matters worse, Lancea couldn’t activate its effect, because it was MacDonald’s own Mimighoul Dragon effect! Mirror Mage still added Revealer to MacDonald’s hand. Kritz continued, using Mimighoul Dungeon to add Mimighoul Fairy to his hand. He Special Summoned Fairy, and Xyz Summoned Giant Mimighoul. That added Mimighoul Maker to his hand, which put a Flower on MacDonald’s field and Armor in Kritz’s hand, then let him Special Summon Archfiend. He Special Summoned Armor. He activated Ripple Bird’s effect again, flipping up MacDonald’s Flower. Flower returned to Kritz, while adding Room to his hand. He used Flower and Archfiend to Xyz Summon Recital Starling, using its effect to add D.D. Crow to his hand. He then used Recital Starling to Xyz Summon Dragon Gate, and used its effect to increase its ATK. He attacked directly with Armor, Ripple Bird, Giant Mimighoul, and Dragon Gate, dropping MacDonald to just 400 Life Points! He used Giant Mimighoul to play Downerd Magician, then that for Divine Arsenal AA-ZEUS – Sky Thunder. He Set one back row card.

MacDonald drew Hexa Spirit of the Ice Barrier, and Kritz used D.D. Crow to banish Winds from the Graveyard. That allowed Icejade Gymir Aegirine to return to the field. She Normal Summoned Mirror Mage, and Kritz flipped up Mimighoul Room. MacDonald responded with Icejade Gymir Aegirine, and Kritz revealed his last card: Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit! The Aegirine was destroyed, and Room flipped Mirror Mage face-down to keep MacDonald from making any further plays. That was enough for the handshake!
