Round 9 Feature Match: Adrian Gonzalez vs. Jonathan Lu
We’re in the final Swiss round of the day for the 250th YCS in Los Angeles! This time we’re featuring Adrian Gonzalez, from Chicago, IL, fresh off a Top Cut finish at TEAM YCS Las Vegas. He’s using the same strategy as then: Live☆Twin Sprights! His opponent is Jonathan Lu, from San Francisco, CA, using the ever popular Kashtira.
Duel 1
Gonzalez began with Spright Blue, Effect Veiler, Enemy Controller, Spright Starter, and Live☆Twin Ki-sikil Frost. He played Starter, Special Summoning Spright Jet and dropping to 6700 Life Points. Jet added another Starter to his hand. He Special Summoned Spright Blue, which added Spright Red to his hand, and he Special Summoned Red. He stacked his monsters for Gigantic Spright in Defense Position, detaching Blue to Special Summon Live☆Twin Lil-la. He then Special Summoned Ki-sikil Frost from his hand, and Link Summoned Evil★Twin Ki-sikil. It Special Summoned Lil-la, and he used both to Link Summon Evil★Twin Lil-la. That revived Evil★Twin Ki-sikil, and he drew Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring with its effect. He used both to play a new Evil★Twin Lil-la. He Set Enemy Controller and Spright Starter.
Lu Special Summoned Kashtira Unicorn. Gonzalez responded with Lil-la to Special Summon Ki-sikil, drawing Live☆Twin Ki-sikil. Unicorn’s effect banished Evil★Twin’s Trouble Sunny from the Extra Deck. Lu tried using Unicorn’s other effect, and Gonzalez used Red, Tributing Lil-la to negate and destroy it. Lu used Triple Tactics Thrust, and Gonzalez negated it with Ash Blossom. Lu used Pressured Planet Wraitsoth, adding Kashtira Fenrir to his hand. Gonzalez used Ki-sikil Frost’s effect in the Graveyard to draw Nibiru, the Primal Being! Lu played Fenrir and used its effect to search the Deck, and Gonzalez responded with Veiler to negate it for the turn. Lu played Kashtiratheosis, which Special Summoned Kashtira Ogre. Ogre searched for Kashtira Big Bang. He moved to his Battle Phase, sending Fenrir to attack Gigantic Spright. In Main Phase 2, he Xyz Summoned Kashtira Shangri-Ira. Gonzalez flipped Enemy Controller, Tributing Spright Red to take Shangri-Ira for the turn. Gonzalez Set a card in his back row. Gonzalez used the effect of Ki-sikil to Special Summon Lil-la, and Lil-la destroyed Shangri-Ira while he still controlled it. Still in the End Phase, Gonzalez used Starter, but Lu had Ash Blossom to negate it.
Gonzalez drew Triple Tactics Talent. He Normal Summoned Live☆Twin Ki-sikil, combining it with Evil★Twin Lil-la for a new Gigantic Spright. It Special Summoned Blue, which got Jet, and he Special Summoned that to get Spright Gamma Burst. He used that to boost his entire field and wipe out Lu’s Life Points!
Duel 2
Lu began this Duel with Pressured Planet Wraitsoth. Gonzalez responded with Ash Blossom, but Lu had Crossout Designator, banishing his own Ash Blossom to negate it! Wraitsoth searched for Kashtira Unicorn, but when he Special Summoned it, Gonzalez used Ghost Mourner & Moonlit Chill to negate it.
The rest of Gonzalez’s hand was Upstart Goblin, Lightning Storm, and Spright Carrot. He drew Nibiru, the Primal Being. He started with Upstart Goblin to draw Dark Ruler No More. He used Lightning Storm to destroy Unicorn, and passed with no other plays.
Lu played another Wraitsoth, using it to get another Unicorn. He Special Summoned it, and its effect added Kashtiratheosis to his hand. He used that to Special Summon Fenrir, and Fenrir added Scareclaw Kashtira to his hand. He stacked Fenrir and Unicorn for Shangri-Ira. He Special Summoned Kashtira Riseheart, then banished Kashtira Big Bang from his Deck to banish three cards from the top of Gonzalez’s Deck. Big Bang’s effect Special Summoned Unicorn, and Shangri-Ira locked down a Pendulum Zone. He Special Summoned Scareclaw Kashtira, banishing Kashtiratheosis, which returned Unicorn to his hand. He moved to the Battle Phase, and Gonzalez activated Nibiru, the Primal Being! He Special Summoned it, and gave Lu a 7000/9800 Primal Being Token!
Gonzalez drew Live☆Twin Lil-la. He Normal Summoned it, then Special Summoned Spright Carrot. He stacked them for Number 29: Mannequin Cat. It Special Summoned Dimension Shifter to Lu’s field, then Special Summoned Spright Blue. Blue searched for Jet, and he Special Summoned Jet to search for Spright Starter. He stacked Jet and Blue for Gigantic Spright. Lu had his own Nibiru! He Special Summoned Nibiru, and Gonzalez received a 7800/5300 Primal Being Token. Gonzalez Set Spright Starter to finish his turn.
Lu played Kashtira Birth, using it to Special Summon Fenrir. Fenrir searched for Riseheart. He Normal Summoned Unicorn, and it added another Kashtira Birth to his hand. He then Special Summoned Riseheart. He stacked Fenrir and Unicorn for Number 11: Big Eye, stealing the Primal Being Token. Riseheart and Nibiru attacked. Big Eye attacked, and Gonzalez flipped Spright Starter to bring Jet to the field and dropped Gonzalez to 1900 Life Points, and Jet added a new Starter to the hand. Big Eye attacked Jet.
Gonzalez drew Triple Tactics Talent. He played Starter for Blue, dropping to 800 Life Points. Blue added Red to his hand. He Special Summoned Red and Xyz Summoned Number 2: Ninja Shadow Mosquito! It attacked Riseheart and put a Hallucination Counter on Big Eye to negate it. He Set Triple Tactics Talent.
Lu Special Summoned Scareclaw Kashtira, which negated Mosquito’s effect! With Gonzalez’s Life Points so low, a single attack finished the Duel!
Duel 3
Gonzalez started the final Duel with a hand of Live☆Twin Lil-la, Nibiru, Live☆Twin Sunny’s Snitch, Spright Starter, and Book of Moon. Lu immediately used Dimension Shifter! Gonzalez played Sunny’s Snitch to add Lil-la to his hand, and he Normal Summoned it. It Special Summoned Ki-sikil, and he Xyz Summoned Mannequin Cat. It Special Summoned Shifter to Lu’s field, which let Gonzalez Special Summon Blue. That got Jet, which got Spright Double Cross. He stacked his Sprights for Gigantic Spright. He detached Jet to Special Summon Carrot. He Set Starter, Book of Moon, and Double Cross.
Lu played Terraforming to find Wraitsoth. He played it, and Carrot Tributed Mannequin Cat to negate and destroy Wraitsoth. Lu played Dark Hole, clearing the field. He Set one back row card.
Gonzalez drew Secret Password. Lu activated another Dimension Shifter! Gonzalez continued, using Secret Password to get Sunny’s Snitch, and that for Lil-la. He Normal Summoned Lil-la, which Special Summoned Live☆Twin Ki-sikil Frost. He flipped Spright Starter to get Spright Blue, which got Spright Jet, and he Special Summoned Jet to get Spright Gamma Burst. He moved to the Battle Phase, using Gamma Burst to power up all his monsters and take the Match!
